I have a GFC on a Tundra and the mileage was worse with the camper until I took those GFC Beef rack bars off the top and then it is almost the same as stock mileage. The space above the cab is necessary for body flex off road not just the antenna clearance as with a Toyota truck there is a lot of flex between the bed and cab. I love the GFC for it's practicality. They are very versatile.

The wind noise of that topper really came through on the video, that would drive me insane. I'd like to see how the noise and MPG would do with a deflector mounted in front of it.

$8k - $10k for a (fancy) truck canopy is just insane. My first (real) truck camper was $16k (Northstar 8.5 SC).

I just picked up my OR Premium earlier this week. With no modifications yet, I hit 25mpg on my 30 mile commute, 98% of it was highway, and the engine hasn't broken been broken in yet.

One thing is for certain, it's an absolutely gorgeous and a great way to kill an afternoon with more than a few places of interest to stop at along the way!

When I added a RTT to my 2022 Power wagon I added a rack that was low enough to let me add a large RTT and keep it below my truck roof line. The tent with the rack added 225 lbs. I also have a rolltop bed cover. After 4 long toad trips it has only cost my mileage 3/10th of a MPG. The trick is to keep the tent below roof line if you want to save your MPG.

So far All the mpg test videos I've seen of this new tacoma has been very good, the hybrid should be even better but we will have to wait till next week to find out how much better it will be

I don't think the hybrid will be better. It might even be worse - it will definitely be the same or worse on highway. It's designed to increase power, not efficiency.

Well. I kinda find this attractive. My 2004 4Runner with a mild lift, metric 32's that are load E all terrains, realistically gets high 19's in a similar high desert conditions. So... Thanks for putting this vid together. It shows what happens to this truck when a bed lid gets above the cab. I would also like to see what happens when you throw a heavier set a dirt worthy tires on it. Nice work guys.👍

It'd be useful to compare different octanes in some of these new turbocharged pickups. We know they have knock sensors to prevent detonation but how much are you losing - compared to the savings - if you go down to 85, and do you get anything if you to up to 89/91?

That camper shell has a top built like a sail! Put a camper shell on my tundra that is level with the roof line of the truck,no difference in the gas mileage! Plus now have a dry secure storage area! 😊😊

Correct, once the mass is in movement, the energy to maintain that movement is negligible. Weight's affect would be more pronounced with stop and go driving.

This is quite impressive. My old '89 Toyota 4x4 truck with a 22RE only got 16MPG.

Got a 2022 Tacoma TRD Off Road with a Four Wheel Camper .. the Swift. Tacoma stock was getting 22/23 mpg at 4680 lbs .. with the camper I dropped to 15/17 mpg and that's with 6100 lbs total weight. Both measurements were done with the truck full of all my gear and the same with the camper .. propane, 20 gal's onboard water, etc. 🤠

Better width than the fleet model for mpg. Still 950 lbs for a minimally equiped midsize truck camper is on the hefty side. Sturdiness and durability has a price. Hope they can lighten it up with more exotic materials in the future.

Project Farm would only do this if he could test 12 different “camper shells”. Then he would: -Put them on 8 different trucks and cars for install characteristics and MPG loops. -Test insulation -Test paint durability -Test sound -Test for bear, bobcat, and mountain lion defense -Test for rain protection -Test for comfort All in a very tidy 30-45 minute video while also buying everything himself 😂

Topping off the tank can cover the vapor intake hole with liquid gas, which can then be sucked into the charcoal canister. This can damage the canister and possibly other parts of the system, which will cause the car's check-engine light to come on and could potentially cost hundreds of dollars to repair.

They’re not topping it off. That’s when you slow it down and run it up to the top. It will mess up the valve to the crankcase and affect performance until replaced.

I think the camper between the roof of cab and bottom of the campers over the cab on the front is creating a big pocket of wind resistance as it comes over the windshield & under the camper it's acting like a big glove for a sail and creating more resistance cuz it seems like it hits the camper wall and acts kindof like a parachute so if u were able to fill the gap with some type of aero peice similar but nicer than the ford lightning to alaska trip wher it was fixed in a parking lot that ud gain like 1.5 to 2 miles back on ur mpg

Surprising mileage!

26.3 to 23.3? pretty good! would love to see one done with a full height camper. pretty sure it would be WAY more mpg loss. i kept a canopy on my 97 f150 most of the time, and noticed an increase of about 8%mpg the times i had it off.

True, but with a high and what looks to be Very strong bed cover top to where you could have a camp setup in the bed space. Also, how hard and costly would it be to put a camp top on standard truck caps and not worry about collapsing it. It's an engineered system. Price is a bit high but it does work well and likely better with a fairing...

It covers the antenna? You will not be able to use SXM. They need to make a relocation kit for it or you use the use of the antenna.

Yes the music is annoying. How much does the camper weigh ? I've had a Leer high roof camper on my 2011 RAM 5.7 since new. Cost $1400. I get 22 mpg on the hwy,17-18 mpgs city if I'm careful with the acceleration 😮.

First run had one man in the truck, the run with the topper had an additional man in the truck. Toyota isn’t known for their great payloads, so adding 300 lbs in the passenger seat will automatically decrease the mpg, regardless of the topper.

This is exactly the video I wanted you to make when I watched the install video. Overall would you say the new Mid-Size trucks have better highway fuel-economy then a comparable 1/2ton?

I can chime in as I have a modern mid-size trucks and a 1/2 ton (Jeep Gladiator and F-150 respectively). My Gladiator gets 21 mpg combined and my F-150 gets 14 mpg combined.

I have a 2015 Ram 1500 5.7l 4x4 8-speed Quadcab. And a 2023 Gladiator Mojave 3.6l. Ram gets an average slightly above 19 MPG, Mojave gets 17.4 MPG. Comes down to aero and gearing. They weigh almost identically. They have the same 285/70R17 tires. I drive pretty easy and hang in the right lane. Jeep has 4.10s, Ram has 3.21s. Oddly the Ram has a Fab Fours front bumper and a 2" front level. Still gets slightly better hwy mpg. Driving the Jeep on a windy day is a bit more work than the Ram. I've had both since new. 167K on the Ram with not one issue.

I will never understand these tent campers. Take 15 minutes and pitch a tent with a nice air mattress and use the payload capacity you save for more important things like firewood and food.

You're not safe from bears unless you're in a solid sided vessel. They can open doors, claw through fabric, and are amazing climbers. Unless you have a full hardwired camper, if a bear wants in, they will get in. Ground tent vs roof top tent offer the same protection from bears. On their hind legs they can easily be 10' tall.

I don’t get it either. Expensive, ruin any aerodynamics on the highway, ruin center of gravity off road. They are cramped, and you have to climb down a ladder to go pee. You are more exposed to wind up high. Most look like Walmart quality tents when unfolded. 99% of the time if solo I sleep in a hammock with a rain fly. Weighs 2 lbs. Takes up virtually no space. Less than $100.

You won't get any satellite radio with that fancy truck cap on... can't bring myself to call it a camper...lol.

Can really hear a lot of wind noise. Needs some kind of wind deflector.

Toyota should have recongnized that and made the 3.4L from the Tundra an option. Even if it was detuned it would be a better engine in a modified truck turning big tires and carrying a bunch of weight.

Topping off repeatedly can damage evaporative components, you're supposed to top on the first fill up auto stop. Some people like to top their gas tank off to fill every bit they can but can causes issues from 'overfilling'

My guess is there’s a combination of things going on here. The increased weight and the turbulence from the front of the camper hurt mpg, but then not having the open bed helps mpg.

@@Jay-me7gw that was the open tailgate vs closed tailgate. An open (or removed) tailgate is actually worse for mpg. A number of tests have shown that tonneau covers increase mpg, and caps may also improve it depending on how heavy they are. I think tfl did a cap vs no cap test years ago and it was a wash.

When I found out that Toyota was dropping the 3.5L Naturally Aspirated (NA) V6, I naturally bought the tried and true 23 Tacoma TRD Off Road, double cab , long bed with the Premium and Technology pkgs. Historically a Turbo engine simply doesn’t last as long as a NA engine.

@@ALMX5DP I’m happy for you, but I just don’t trust a Turbo engine. I’m hoping I’m wrong, but I doubt it. I’m too old and on a fixed income and if anything went wrong after the warranty I’d have to dip into my savings. If I were still young enough to work, I’d probably look into it, but I just can’t afford to take the plunge at this stage in life.

Honestly, think that you need to load it up to maximum payload capacity with all the junk to go camping and do the loop again

Stick a well designed deflector/fairing in front of the camper to stop the air getting between the camper and cab roof. Then see the efficiency regained. Possibly something at the back of the camper as well to reduce turbulence behind the vehicle.

It would be even more interresting to see the difference with an additional 1000lbs of payload. Noone is going to travel with that camper and an empty bed.

Some folks are getting up to 27 mpg with the new Tacoma

If you put a lift and bigger tires on it you can get that mileage down quite a bit more. You can probably get it down into Jeep territory if you try hard enough. Ha!

Older Toyota pickup trucks are not Tacomas, they are Toyota Hilux, Tacoma's started in 1995.5

Is no one else concerned about how low the rear suspension hangs. I saw one in person at my nearest Toyota dealer and it is low to the ground. Hangs as low as the side steps do.

So glad that Toyota went back to a 4 cylinder in their “small truck”. I have personally never been a fan of V6 engines, just not happy sounding engines to me.

I can’t seem to get my 24 Tacoma better than 19.2 totally stock no canopy no aftermarket stuff In town 17.1 is my best I’m not sold on the mpg It’s been a bit of a disappointment same story 20 yrs ago with the 3.4 Tacoma mpg was never accurate to the manufacturer specifications. Good luck

Driving conditions/habits play a huge role. I’ve never had a difficult time meeting EPA ratings if I was conscious about my driving (can get 21+mpg highway in my F-150 5.0 if I keep speed in check, which is what the EPA rates it at).

Stay out of boost. I have owned many turbo cars and know how to drive without getting into boost. That will improve mpg. Just cause its turbocharged doesnt mean you need all of the power all the time. Some people in general just have a heavy foot and will consistently get less mpg than another driver. For example my wife and I. I get 2 mpg better than her all the time

@@Rekuzan which is why I daily drive a $17000 used 2018 Chevy bolt and dont daily drive a brand new $60000 Tacoma with a $10000 GFC. It costs me 1/5th the cost to buy and 1/8th the cost per mile to drive it. Anyone who buys this setup worried about saving $100 a year in gas is focusing on the wrong spending habits.

Impressive results for carrying a Camper!!!

No, you can't use 85 - or at least should not for the longevity, power, and efficiency. This has nothing to do with the turbocharger. It's the mass air flow sensor. Even if you tried 85, you probably would lose any cost efficiency gained to lower fuel efficiency as the engine compensated for the lower octane fuel with with timing and fuel adjustment. The turbo makes you more likely to detonate with the lower octane fuel, but that is true of any increase in compression ratio and/or intake air temperature. 85 Octane fuel is somewhat useful for carbureted engines and fuel injected systems using an uncompensated vane air flow meter operating at high altitudes. It has no place in a modern vehicle designed for 87 Octane, because modern vehicles use a mass air flow sensor - which compensates for altitude - to measure intake air. You should talk to an engineer and do a Denver 100 & Ike on 85 & 87. I would expect even a naturally aspirated truck to have a measurable decline in performance and efficiency with the lower octane fuel.

I would rather buy a nice ground tent and save $10k. And I won’t lose any MPG 😁

Toyota trucks flex so much you need that gap off road so the cab doesn't hit the camper. I have one on a Tundra and I love it. The roof rack bars caused more noise and gas mileage drop than the camper itself in my usage.
