Buck should have a special classification as a "Family Knife". My Grandpa gave me my first one when I was 8. My dad liked it so much he bought one for himself. Now he's in his 80's and has passed his on to my son. And this "Passing On" is a pretty serious event! For both my son and I getting that knife from our Grandpas really meant a lot to each of us, a wonderful way to remember our Grandpas by but also a "Rite of Passage". HEY BUCK - HOW ABOUT A "HERITAGE" model?? ..

I still have and utilize three mid 70’s era Bucks. The 440c used back then is far superior (IMHO) to the steel used in Buck’s standard knives beginning during the 80s. Two were gifts from my parents when I was 10 and eleven. The first was a Buck Personal the other was a Special. The third was a Fillet that was given as payment for helping out at a small sporting goods store. Love all three of them!

I had a Buck 119 in 1975, when I was 14. It is a classic knife, even in Germany. I lost it somewhere at the Lake Konstanz on a fishing trip. #22aday Stay safe everybody, and stay blessed. Greetings from Germany!

You cannot go wrong with a Buck for quality and even price. I would think that the only advantage of the S35vn is that it will hold an edge better/longer than 420HC. I haven't had a problem with phenolic being slippery. I wouldn't use a knife with a slippery handle. Thanks for sharing it with us. You make quality videos.

Bought the 105 Pathfinder Pro and liked it so much I bought the 119 Special Pro too. The upgraded steel and handle material are worth it in my opinion. Buck Knives were great back in the 70's when I was a pup, now they are even better. I am amazed every time I use a 119 or a 110 or a 112 or any of the buck classics how great they feel in the hand and how well they get the job done. I've bought a lot of knives in the last 50 years and I keep coming back to Buck. Classic tools steeped in American tradition. Great video. Thanks for sharing the day with us.

THANK YOU for talking about the ease of resharpening this blade! I’ve been considering getting the 119 Pro for a couple weeks, but wasn’t sure the S35VN would fit my needs well. I’ve carried a 420HC 119 almost every day for the last 7 years, and have spent thousands of hours using it. I love it, and have really appreciated how easy it is to resharpen with my pocket stone. It is so good to hear this version can be resharpened the same way! I have other knives in higher end steels (most specifically, one of my favorite knives is a custom fixed blade in Sleipner at 60HRC) that I don’t use as much as my 420HC 119, as any edge damage or wear that occurs takes absolutely forever to sharpen out. Literally hours. Makes field-sharpening a total chore. I’ll probably end up getting the S35VN 119 Pro now

The classic fixed blades from Buck have been around so long because they work. A Buck 110 and a 120 were among the first knives I ever bought. The fact that you can pick up a standard 110 and 119 for $35 and $50 respectively makes them a great value. I have more expensive knives and still use Bucks regularly. I use a Buck 102 Woodsman at home in the kitchen and for food prep when I’m camping. They’re great knives for the money.

My butt was getting sore from sitting on the fence buying one of these knives. I have had a few over many many years (since 1982). When I think what I bought my first one for at first I balked. Then I remember when a bottomless cup of coffee went up to .25 cents from .20 c. My first car cost about the same as a mid level mountain bike does today. So putting things in that kind of perspective I guess this pro version, USA made knife, Mexican sheath isn't really that insane... Yeah I'll buy that unashamedly. Thanks for the video, Buck owes you one.

S30V is not tough at all. Edge holding yes, but for toughnes I'll put my money on the 420HC over the S30V for sure. Look up the Joe X video on the Buck 120. Do that with S30V. No way it holds up that stuff . Gerber Strongarm , 420HC also. That's a tough knife. S30V in Buck 119 or 120 would make it unnecessary weak.

I never understood why they chose such slick handle material. I guess it's for cleaning and not getting blood into the pores of the scales. Polished micarta was a choice that's a perfect fit. About time Buck, now their fans can skin 3 deer before having to sharpen their blades. I just bought a Benchmade Bushcrafter in s30v which is the same steel just slight toughness difference. I think the steel isn't hard to sharpen at all, it's actually very forgiving stuff polished up amazing. I had to reprofile that Bushcrafter edge is really broad not my style at all... BUT now that its convexd and polished I LOVE IT.

I recently acquired an HK5 from BPS Knives ($30, Amazon) and have to say it is my all time favorite camping knife. I have a Buck 119, and it's a good knife, but the HK5 is just awesome. And it's very affordable. Full tang. Leather sheath with dangler. 90 degree ground spine. It's a lot of knife for that price. Highly recommend you check them out.

Buck has really been making some nice stuff lately. I am not all that into Buck but I really want one of these and I have just got 2 Bucks the past few weeks with the April and May knives of the month. They basically do a sprint every month limited to 500 knives. Last month was the 104 fixed blade. It has red burlap micarta and a 3v blade it was $130 and this month was the Marksman with D2 and the handles are Cerakoted white and everything else is Cerakoted black for a Stormtrooper look also $130. I really want that Legacy 110 with s45vn and marbled cf too.

I've owned several. Great looking knife, very lightweight. Not a great chopper. Hand guard is great, but it can get in the way. They are twice as expensive as the last time purchased one. I still have the sheath from the last one. I think because they are so expensive now, I will not get another, but may consider the 124 Frontiersman or whatever is called. It's got the straight back, but the back is still bevelled the last inch or so to get point into joints. Better for batoning. I carry a Cold Steel EDC in the woods now, along with my Victorinox Sentinel, single hand clip, which is a phenomenal lightweight pocket knife /multi-tool though it's stuff action is solid and safe, it's slow to deploy and fold and more difficult with single hand than most folding kickbacks now days, but it is quality, and will not fail and with good dexterity, can be operated fairly quickly with either hand. I dig the Cold Steel 7" Bushman as well. Had to customize the sheath to make it work right, and the knife itself must be customized with grip material, maybe a wood or metal handle plug, maybe a lanyard which can quick secure it to a cane end for an instant scythe to clear a big camp fast. The Bushman can do allot, but you'll want to file the back some for fire steel striking. Also the Bushman is cheap and unbreakable, holds an edge just fine, yet is easy to sharpen. I don't believe I'd pay all the money for the new pro Bucks, if I do go for another 119 S, it would be the red handled Micarta. That way it would be good looking and more unique. The 119S is a sharp looker with style, and so lightweight also. If I had more money, and more confidence I could keep whatever I have, I'd invest in some of the Bucks, but more than I can carry on my back is more than I'm likely to be able to keep, way my life in this wonderful fucking country has thus far gone.

I noticed a lot of ppl talking smack on the winkler knife review U did .. IMO that’s not an ideal knife for survival wilderness situations But it is a great knife for carry This 119 pro is however , a great outdoors knife So w that said , a folding saw, a hatchet, the 119 pro and a winkler on the hip Would cover all cutting needs for a weekend camping trip 🏕️

The 119 is really a big game hunting knife. The hollow grind isn’t great for buttoning and the sharp clip point is great to work over joints, etc. But it’s capable of more.

For what I need, can't go wrong. It is hard to beat. You'll always circle back to it, try as you may to replace it with a better option. Its design knocks it out of the ball park. I prefer the regular 420HC because my sharpening skills are not good.

Whooo weee! A $190 Buck 119? Well, that 90 degree spine sure got something going on. I just might pick this up. I remember first picking up the 119 at a martial arts store when I was in high school. I was buying a new gi for Judo class and then I saw that beaut in the glass casing. It was love at first sight. Dang thing was so sharp that it cut through the leather sheath and sliced my hand!

In my experience (no jokes about age, please) Buck knives are fine HUNTING knives. By that, I mean they are built, desinged and suited for hunting applications. Skinning, gutting, processing. These knives are not and weren't intedned for utility, bushcraft, survival, etc, unless specifically stated so. That said, they are my go-to for deer and smaller game as well as camp kitchen chores. Buck 105, 113 and 112 owner. I like the micarta, good move.
