The president actually has power in our legislature because he can veto anything he wants. Laws require a simple majority in both houses of Congress. If he president slaps it with s veto, it goes back to congress and requires a 2/3 super majority in both houses to override him. Since American politics are highly partisan, the simple threat of a veto is enough to kill a bill. There has never been a party with a supermajority in both houses. Also if the presidents party is in control of one house, the leader of that house (for example Mitch McConnell) could simply not allow a vote on a proposed bill because he has been informed the president would veto it. He does it all the time. It’s why trump has only vetoed one thing in 2 years

Have you ever wondered why the people who were hit hardest by austerity measures ended up voting for Brexit? One popular idea is that Nigel Farage, the charismatic populist leader, managed to win over those who had become disillusioned with both Labour and the modernised Tories under Blair and Cameron. These people were politically homeless and saw Farage as a champion of their traditional and cultural values, which they felt had been eroded since the 1960s. It's a complex issue, but one thing is for sure: the so-called 'left behinds' were a crucial factor in the Brexit vote. Such an interesting topic.
