“Ash and Snow” is a striking sonic vignette from New Zealand-born, Melbourne-based guitarist/composer Cameron Deyell and Sydney drummer/composer Laurence Pike, who together premiered their potent experimental jazz work Isola at Phoenix earlier this year as part of Season V. In this piece, sound decisions and texture take primacy over melody, almost like electronic music. Pike’s thundering percussion and and Deyell’s descending guitar drones evoke harsh and barren landscapes. Joined by multi-instrumentalist Jasper Leak, the work is evocative and dream-like, offering an immersed listening experience.
