Cameras Reveal the Secret Lives of a Mountain Lion Family | Short Film Showcase

Ойын-сауық

Mountain lions were once thought to be solitary animals, feared and hunted by humans. New footage captured by motion-triggered cameras in secluded areas deep in the Wyoming Wind River range shows a mountain lion family and the animals' unknown social bonds. In this short documentary produced by WildFutures (wildfutures.us/), we also learn about how hard it can be to be a mountain lion, as they face an increasing loss of habitat, harsh winters, trophy hunters and even predators. One cub is lost to an attack by a pack of wolves and another to trophy hunting.

I am a Native American hunter, but no trophy hunter. I was hunting once and I had recently shot a moose near a mountain range and I heard something dash behind me. When I spun around it was a curious mountain lion. She probably had smelt the fresh scent of blood from the moose. She watched me skin, cut, and separate the moose for 2 hours. I was always looking at her just to make sure I wasn't going to get pounced on by her. After I had finished gutting the moose I packed up the meat and my tools and I left behind 2 legs of the moose for her to thank her for not killing me. I still see her every now and then, and I even named her in my Native tongue.

Till you come face to face with these beasties...last summer my friends and I were minding our own business camping not far from a small town when my brother spotted a cougar 30 yards from us in the dark with his flashlight BIG GLOWING EYES crouched near a tree... and it was not going anywhere.. there was 3 of us and it had absolutely no fear of us! We shouted but it came closer.. I pulled out my gun and rang out a shot ... it simply took off just to try to ambush us from the left... We had to form a triangle and slowing leave the area back to our vehicle because it was NOT gonna leave us alone... till it tasted blood... It was later found out by us from the locals that this cat had eaten 3 domestics cats and 2 beloved dogs.. Wonder how you would react if it was your cat, dog, child, or you? All I'm saying is: 1.PLEAE HAVE A WEAPON ON YOU AND DO NOT GO ALONE! 2. They need to be hunted every now and again to keep the balance of power and fear for humans going. Of-course following the law and buying tag but they NEED TO BE HUNTED.

It's a sport. How else to control the population? Mountain lions are not endangered; in some places in fact they're too numerous and pose a danger to herds, pets, and small children. Too many of them and they'll die excruciating deaths from starvation or freezing or disease. Today their numbers are protected and managed; when populations rise too high, hunters are allowed to pay for the privilege of hunting them. This is a scientific process determined by wildlife biologists. If you have a better way to manage it, please do share.

Truth is, Nat Geo lied. That was no trophy hunter. An 2 or 3 year old male cougar is no trophy at all. That was simply a hunter doing what he or she does in their place in the food chain. They were helping to control the population to prevent the population exceeding the carrying capacity of that particular area

@@thewildcardperson Poachers are trash, however they're also not very common. The Division of Fish and Game DO NOT give out tags in a way that if all tags are filled, and a few more animals are killed in addition, it will hurt the population. There is a buffer in the harvest estimation for the season so that these unaccountable deaths won't hurt the population overall, and if the population drops more then expected for whatever reason, limits will be passed for next season to prevent it from dropping anymore. What makes someone a trophy hunter? Well it's the mindset of the hunter, who is hunting purely for the trophy and the meat is an afterthought. I don't believe this is the right way to go about hunting, however at the end of the day the outcome is the same, the meat will be harvested and won't go to waste, and the animal was still harvested with a legal tag so the population was not harmed, that means only difference is the mindset of the hunter. If the "trophy hunter" was to not to harvest the meat, and just take the head, that is poaching and is illegal. How the filmmaker knew whether or not the hunter was a "trophy hunter", I have no clue, and more likely then not it was said that way to vilify the hunter who happened to legally harvest the mountain lion the crew was filming.

However personally instead of having its body on display for everyone to see, I think we should put its body to good use. And yes I do know that mountain lions are not near yet. However it is actually getting closer, since a lot of people do not care for them. There are places that say If you see a mountain lion. Christian O. Holz killing rare wild animals is banned and harshly punished. Endangered animals are almost always protected, and tags (a piece of paper saying you are legally allowed to kill a certain animal) aren’t given out for those animals. If you are ever caught poaching (hunting without a tag) you will get a $10,000 fine (might change based on the state), face jail time, and have any items (gun, truck, ammo, etc.) on you permanently confiscated.

Yeah, let's do like in France : wipe out all predator specie, and every year end up with over-growth population of deer and wild boars trampling over all your crops. Predators regulate wild herbivore's population from overgrowing, and trophy hunters don't regulate anything : cougars are an ENDANGERED SPECIE, for crying out loud. And YOU are just trying to bring justification to a despicable murdering habit (maybe you share this habit too, who knows?). So NO : trophy hunters don't deserve any sympathy for their activities, the only thing they deserve is a bullet in the fore-head, and even then it'd just be a waste of ammo on them.

Tiny Floof when there are too many wolves the deer population will be threatened and if nothing is done the deer population in an area could be annihilated so it's up to us to hunt just the right amount of wolves to keep the population in check because if we leave the wolves to multiply the moment the deer runs out some wolves will start hunting cattle and humans. though there has to be a balance and strict enforcement of regulations to how many people can hunt not unlike those in unstable political climates like Africa where corruption can easily take place and easy to get away with.

Andres Terrazas I mean to be fair which is better a hunter paying to hunt an animal or that animal becoming a nuisance. When an animals population goes out of control the state or local government uses tax payer money to pay people to go hunt down these animals until their population is under control again. An example is California and mountain lions, you’re not allowed to hunt them so Californians tax money is being used to keep them under control. Where as a better situation could be you have hunters PAY to hunt them and the state makes money and saves money. Like many others in the comment section have said hunting helps with conservation efforts, hunters pay to hunt, they put their money where their mouth is. Unlike people who just like the idea of a mountain lion, until it kills their dog or runs off with their 4 year old.

IMO, trophy hunters are people who are scared of anything wild. So, to prove their "bravery and power" over these "beasts", they hunt them down from a distance using guns. Quite cowardly really.

That's certainly true. But it's true of hunters in general. I've had a lot of outdoor hobbies, unfortunately including hunting many years ago, and I can tell you that there's no more scared bunch of boys in the woods than hunters. It's really unfortunate the amount of misinformation the general public is subjected to about animals; much of it coming from hunters. But if hunters didn't exaggerate the wily nature of game animals and the ferocity and danger of predators, they'd be exposed for what they really are; cowards. I track cougars every chance I get and have caught many on trail cameras, and even one using my DSLR in daylight, and when a hunter hears what I do for fun, they act like I'm insane. Fear comes from ignorance, and hunters demonstrate that with nearly every conversation they have regarding wildlife.

@Sims 3 Forever Dude You couldn't be any more wrong. There's only 20,000-40,000 left in the wild which is only a fraction of their historical populations. Also, while they may still have a large range, much of that territory has been lost to human development. Not to mention the thousands of roads and highways that inhibit their ability to migrate like they were able to do in the past. Burying your head in the sand and pretending like humans aren't decimating wildlife populations around the world, including cougars, is not going to solve the problem.

It depends on where you are at. Different states have different laws regarding mountain lion hunting. Some allow, others do not. With that being said, it is also not unheard of for trophy hunters to poach a lion in an illegal state, then acquire a lion tag from a legal state, so that they can get their lion to a taxidermist or whatnot. Sad but true.

  • @m53goldsmith

There are at least a dozen states in the US that still allow hunting of mountain lions. However, the term "trophy hunter" could apply to either legal or illegal hunting that is for the purpose of obtaining a trophy. So, we don't actually know which of these is being referenced in this video. (Wyoming, however, is one of these states.)

Yes we are humans and yes its cruel but animals deserve to live too and so many of them are more intelligence and amazing than you could imagine. I do not believe that humans are superior to any animal. We are all equal. These hunters deserve to be punished. Maybe not by being murdered but nevertheless punished. They're a disease on our society, only bringing good people harm. We're objectively better off without psychopaths among us.

Then we should just put all the trophy hunters onto death row or in jail immediately is what you're implying.

Mega Crash The Hedgehog trophy hunters are not the reason they are endangered (according to the national wildlife federation they are not even endangered yet, they are just “threatened”). The US closely monitors how many people are legally allowed to kill cougars each year to keep their population up. They also charge people a lot of money for the “privilege” to hunt a mountain lion, which is then used in conservation, stopping poachers, etc. as much as most people may hate trophy hunters, you can’t really blame them for a species becoming endangered.

It does to me too, and what if it gets tight or too loose and hangs up on something, as their weight probably fluctuates?
