Why is there such aggressive policing of photography in shopping malls? There is no one there and there is nothing new to see in any of the stores. Seems like nothing more than a power trip. The US is the same way.

If you are happy to be filmed by a total stranger and have it put on the World Wide Web for all eternity then keep defending these parasites. Oh and they make obscene amounts of money out of it. I personally think my privacy while I go about my daily business should be protected. So in this case I’m with the security guard not the obnoxious twat trying to goad him. I wonder how these bloggers would feel if their personal life(if they have one ) was blasted all over the web? Pictures of their children etc

@@fair98fair technically it is indeed private property.. and yet at the same time - people entering this precinct are not pre-warned that they are entering a Fiefdom where security may descend on them at any time and start imposing arbitrary rules.. i think where any private property has any duty of care over its patrons - as this venue does - then there is a crucial reason that all cameras are allowed at all times - in order to record whether all pertinent health and safety laws are being adhered to..

some videos of yours are a hit, some a miss. when you're on a public street you have every right to film. when you're in private property, a supercentre owned by a company there's certain rules, and they employ people to enforce those rules. by entering their premises you're agreeing to an unspoken contract. i enjoy when you're in a public open area and the people try to demand you stop filming cos you are in the right, but here you were in the wrong. you didn't get "irrate" at first, but when he asked you to leave in a kind tone you decided to call him names. are you that desperate for clout that you want to fight everyone? "horrible little man" i assumed he was going to be like one of the other crazy people u previously filmed, but he seemed quite polite.

Youve got to remember that many of these shopping centres/arcades have been built over what once-were public streets. Streets that have been handed over to private developers/management agents without public consultation or consent. Furthermore, the legal definition of a public place in England & Wales is “any place to which the public have access” (this suits The State as it means they can apply public controls in more locations)

Yeah agree on this one. It clearly caused the security guy anxiety to confront Charlie. The problem is much of Charlie’s thing is to talk about his rights to film under the law, and that’s a great line to use, but when he doesn’t have that right he clearly doesn’t care. This kinda undermines the times when he uses the law to his favour. Whats to stop people who don’t want to be filmed in the outside to say they don’t care about the law either?

Many shopping centres do indeed have a ban on photography & videography. This is part of their terms & conditions of entry and will be displayed somewhere. The law states that you can film in or from a public place, this includes private spaces that public are normally admitted to even if there is an admittance charge, unless the terms & conditions of entry specifically forbid photography. This is the bit that shopping centres and most concert venues use to stop you filming.
