Southport is a mix of the genteel and the grubby; It has a wealthier elderly population, retirees from Manchester, Liverpool and the Lancashire towns, with a large number of care and nursing homes, together with some elements that have migrated from Liverpool, which is not far. Lord Street, the main shopping road, was a very upmarket arcade type place back in the day, with grand hotels and cafes. It's a shadow of its former self. The ugly Promenade is a sea wall. Even though the tide goes out seemingly for miles, high tide and storm surge used to flood the sea front. Scary to drive on the Marine Parade when it's under water and you can't see the edge.

Southport was a lovely town in the 1950’s and 60’s. The Prince of Wales was a top class hotel, which many a first division team stayed in before playing Everton or Liverpool.
