Calving season, a busy day on the farm and some close calls
Today we follow a day in the life of a farmer during calving season.
We start the day taking care of the morning chores and sorting out the calves from last night
A busy day on the farm
Also Kate the border collie is hear to help out
Then we have a few callings to attend to as that day goes on
Some close calls as some of the cows need some help with calving

I think I enjoy this because Shawn is knowledgeable and conscientious. He has a lot of integrity and is trustworthy. Never a dull moment watching him go about his duties and learning what’s involved in his life in animal husbandry. Thanks, Sean!!
I was assistant farm manager on a thoroughbred farm and we foaled many a mare out. Every foaling was as awesome as the last. Even with having to hold your eyes open with toothpicks after a few nights of foaling and and always on the video watch. And always fascinated me that 99% of the time, horses will foal at night.
It's no coincidence, I think, that I love this channel and I love the show All Creatures Great & Small

Yes, James Herriot in the Yorkshire Dales! I've read all his books a zillion times since I was a teenager!
Fascinating! I also appreciate so much that you acknowledge the entire team and that you do not do this alone! Kudos to you and everyone else on the team for all your hard work -and to those calving cows too. It's crucial for us city dwellers to understand how our food is produced and how much blood, sweat and tears are a part of farming. I have nothing but respect for farmers and your tough but essential work.

Will say again. You ARE a VERY good husbandman!!! The cows here on the mountain have been calving. Our girls give birth in the open field and it has been COLD up here. These are tough little guys!! Now the herdsman will have to guard against the pack of wolves in this area. Great job Sean. That farm owner is VERY lucky to have you in his employ.

Anyone else let out a cheer when that calf got up on all four legs? 🥰
City girl here. I am always amazed at how a first time mom knows just what to do. That Hefner was wonderful. That’s enough excitement for me for one day. 🤗I feel as if I was holding my breath. Thank you so much. Love and best wishes for you and yours. From NC, USA.
Thanks for showing us the calf’s first moments of life, figuring out how to use its legs. Those heifers are fortunate to have you and the team there looking out for the safety of mom and baby!
This is a great side of the work that you do to help bring life into this world!

As ever awesome video. I notice your eyes look extremely tired, long hours and the worry about potential calving problems. I keep re-watching all your videos numerous times and am learning something new again and again. Taught me to be more observant and it's also helping me understand some of the "quirks" of my Australian shepherd. All the best from northern British Columbia
Nothing cuter than newborn calves and lambs and then they start playing. Oh my goodness how cute.!!!
I was nervous about both those calfs, Sean. The wobbly legs of the calf trying to get under mom was so sweet. You are patient and so good at what you do. Best to you and Stacey, SW FL, USA
So moving, thank you Sean for allowing us to witness the births- so glad you’re able to help them- amazing!! Hard work for sure but rewarding ❣️ Keep yourself safe✌🏼💕
Truly amazing to be able to watch this miracle of life. Thank you for sharing this amazing experience with us, along with your explanation of what you were doing and why. Hard work, but joyful 🥰

. I remember that many years ago I was babysitting two children on a remote farm in Caithness, when I heard a great mooing from the byre. I thought about rustlers (don't ask me why!) . 'i went out woth a big knife to see

The miracle of birth never ceases to amaze me. 🎉
I got a good laugh at the brown cow sticking her head in to the video right after you helped the little calf out. Like they say ..there's one in every crowd! 😂
The opening with your dog looking at you with utter devotion and love was the BEST!!❤️
What a star. First breath and first step viewed by thousands. Great mommy too
Whirly girly, Kate the Great was happy for your attention during the intro! I really enjoyed watching the calving process. That one newborn was determined to get on its feet... just needs to figure which end of mama to find some milk!
It takes a lot of patience and endurance to handle all these situations. You're doing a great job. Maybe someday you'll own that place.
The only time I've seen birthing (or it looked like it) is on "All Creatures Great and Small". It's amazing to see it happening in real life = real time. Thank you Sean and everyone.
Calving and lambing season at the same time? You and Kate the Great certainly have your hands and paws full right now. Your employer is so lucky to have you there making sure everything goes as it should. Wishing all the best.❤ P.S. your Ridgeline jacket and hood look incredibly warm and durable, but do they carry warm hats as well? Your ears look so cold!
Loved seeing the calves born.
It's a lot of work for you and they all look like grand, healthy calves, Sean; even the little one taking more time looks right enough. Funny how that one cow got wild on you. Hope she calms down soon! That heifer's doing a great job for a new mom. So satisfying to watch the calves stand that first time. All the best for the rest of the season.

Good memories for me to see calving. You hava a lot to do. Bless you and your wife.
Really amazing work you do Sean! Thank you!
Job well done by the new momma! I grew up on a farm and although calving was a lot of work it was my favorite time of year. Thank you for documenting these amazing moments.
Are these what we call black angus? We had Brahmas, and white face polled Herefords. Cattle have the most beautiful eyes! There’s nothing I dislike about this channel. Nature is something and a pleasure to be enjoyed!
That first cow with the new calf is gorgeous!

It honestly never occurred to me before that COWS could be nasty. I thought it was only bulls!!! The birthing was fascinating. I'm a retired nurse, spent some time in midwifery for humans, so this was interesting. Yes was a bit worried when it didn't look like it was breathing at first! The mom is falling in love already. So lovely to see. The other brown cow wanted to see the new one! Strength for the rest of the season, Sean, and also to Stacey, who has punctured nights alongside you as you get up again to help out again! Then after that I guess it's the lambs...

Heart warming to watch new life arrive, with or without help. Thank you for the video!
Amazing! Really captures the emotions of calving. Not the smells, but definitely the feels. :-) So glad the crises were averted and great to see this side of your work! Best to all of you.
Lovely to see new life coming to the farm!! Do you ever have to pull the calves? It would be interesting to see that life and death struggle that happens when the cow/heifer can't get it out without help. Would the cameras ever catch that, because I know you can't do that and hold a camera!!??
Thanks for sharing the videos of the calving season. Keep up the important work!
Nice one Sean. I really appreciate these videos showing the other aspects to the farm.
Thanks for sharing Sean it looks like hardworking keeping an eye on those ladies and their calves. Hope things go smoothly for the rest of them ❤
So many memories of helping calving as a child in Ireland
That's alot of buckets with water and feed to manage in each pen. A busy time all round for you.

Hi there l like watching this video. The baby calves are very cute 😊 thank you for sharing.tc
Brilliant video, so glad you were there to catch that little calf in time, AND that you caught it on video, what a pro. You were in and out of there before mama cow could even think about getting aggressive with you. With 7 more to go, how many calves did you have this season? It is lovely to see the new little ones starting to frolic and prance. Amazing how able they are just minutes after birth. A few resident barn cats could make short work of those naughty mice but I wonder what Kate and her clan would think of them (and vice versa!)
Whirly Girly - LOL You look tired Shaun - not surprising

Beautiful cows and calves. Can you tell us a little about raising cows in Scotland? Are you as worried about disease as England is?
Excellent video Sean 👍
Wonderful video!
I know as you’ve explained that sadly the wool has lost value on the market. I live in Canada, and when I was much younger I spun around wove wool. Have you explored the cottage industry in Canada? Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland? Canada still prides itself on Hudson’s Bay blankets. Scotland is a part of our Canadian culture. I love your posts and will with your help, try to find resources for your wool. This is only if you want. You are so much a part of my Canadian history.
