Calvin and the Radical Reformation

Dr. Kenneth Howell, former Presbyterian pastor, university professor, and author, gives an understanding of John Calvin and the part he played in the Reformation. Calvin, who may have been more influential than Martin Luther, believed that it was not he who was leaving the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, but that the “Romanists” (i.e. Catholics) already had. Dr. Howell delves into the history and theology of Calvin and Calvinist spirit.

When I entered the fullness of the faith at Easter Vigil 2010, that night when I said my evening prayers, after I was done, I turned out the light to go to sleep, and as I lay there, the Spirit of God spoke these words to me in my spirit, "Now I belong to you, and you belong to Me" Thank you Father, Son, and Holy Spirit for bringing me to the fullness of The Truth, I will love You forever and ever! 🙏 Amen

It is great to be a Catholic. Good job Dr. Howell. We all pray that the Protestants will one day see the light and come back home. The prodigal son was not rejected by the father but instead was given a feast a demonstration of the father's love. Our hands are always open to embrace you all, come back home. Please do not be ashamed to come back home because we are ready to welcome you all home. Remember pride, arrogance, power, popularity and prosperity can entice your decision to stay away. Do not let any of these hinder your salvation. Come back home.

SADOLET'S LETTER TO THE SENATE AND PEOPLE OF GENEVA Moreover, we obtain this blessing of complete and perpetual salvation by faith alone in God and in Jesus Christ. When I say by faith alone, I do not mean, as those inventors of novelties do, a mere credulity and confidence in God, by which, to the seclusion of charity and the other duties of a Christian mind, I am persuaded that in the cross and blood of Christ all my faults are unknown; this, indeed, is necessary, and forms the first access which we have to God, but it is not enough. For we must also bring a mind full of piety towards Almighty God, and desirous of performing whatever is agreeable to him; in this, especially, the power of the Holy Spirit resides. This mind, though sometimes it proceeds not to external acts, is, however, inwardly prepared of itself for well-doing, and shows a prompt desire to obey God in all things, and this in us is the true habit of divine justice. For what else does this name of justice signify, or what other meaning and idea does it present to us, if regard is not had in it to good works? For Scripture says, that "God sent his Son to prepare a people acceptable to himself, zealous of good works;" and in another place it says, that we may be built up in Christ unto good works. If, then, Christ was sent that we, by well-doing, may, through him, be accepted of God, and that we may be built up in him unto good works; surely the faith which we have in God through Jesus Christ not only enjoins and commands us to confide in Christ, but to confide, working or resolved to work well in him. For faith is a term of full and ample signification, and not only includes in it credulity and confidence, but also the hope and desire of obeying God, together with love, the head and mistress of all the virtues, as has been most clearly manifested to us in Christ, in which love the Holy Spirit properly and peculiarly resides, or rather himself is love, since God is love. Wherefore, as without the Holy Spirit, so also without love, naught of ours is pleasing and acceptable to God. When we say, then, that we can be saved by faith alone in God and Jesus Christ, we hold that in this very faith love is essentially comprehended as the chief and primary cause of our salvation.

As a US History major, I can agree that no religious group has had more influence on American culture than the Presbyterians and Puritans (disciples of John Calvin's theology and institutes). I used to be a hardcore Calvinist. His influence is still strong, as many leading theological authors are Calvinists. John Piper, John MacArthur, Matt Chandler, Al Mohler, Ligon Duncan, Tim Keller, etc. Calvinism has a muuuuuch bigger influence in exegesis than any other branch of theology. Lutheranism laid the 5 Pillars of the Reformation (Bible Alone, Grace Alone, Faith Alone, God's Glory Alone, Christ Alone). Calvinism gave an exegesis that the people of England and France were looking for outside of Lutheranism. Calvin and Luther are easily 2 of the greatest heads of Reformed Theology, alone with Charles Spurgeon arriving later for the Baptists.

Pat Quint not exactly. The 5 Solas are meant to portray different ultimate things involved in Christianity So Bible “Alone” would mean the Bible stands alone as the authority of faith and practice in Christianity Faith “Alone” means that faith would stand alone as what qualifies for God to reckon us with justification Grace “alone” means that grace stands alone in regard to the manners of why we were saved by God. The list goes on. Each “alone” deals with a different topic

Calvin, real name Jean Cauvin, did not introduce novel doctrines per his own words. All his references to relying heavily on Augustine plus the sheer volume of times Cauvin utters "by the authority of Augustine". What authority did Augustine have and when did he have it? Cauvin had a fixation on establishing a Sinai Covenent based theocracy in Geneva, especially since the city councils made it law prohibiting the questioning or denouncement of anything Cauvin said or wrote. He so hyper fixated on the Old Testament he seemed to miss how interwoven the OT and NT really are. Its also very obvious Cauvin ignored any passages that called into question his actions or directly opposed Cauvin. At Cauvin's demand Geneva officially recognized him as the One & Only Voice of God on Earth, and his writings were to be considered Holy Writ same as the Biblical writers. Cauvin claimed to be ridding the church of "popery" but he certainly ended up imitating much of it. And Cauvin certainly did not behave any better than the popes he condemned.

@@baltichammer6162 Jean "Cauvin" introduced doctrines (TULIP) that were never taught by the apostles, fathers, and doctors of the Catholic Church. Nor did he have the apostolic authority conferred by Christ to destroy the institutional structure of the Church established by Christ on Peter the Rock and the Apostles. Also, Jesus established a New Covenant that replaced the Mosaic Covenant. Finally, "Cauvin" misinterpreted Augustine and distorted his teachings to suit his novel preconceptions. The Council of Trent anathematized this Catholic heretic. In the Catholic Church, we accept the unanimous teachings of the Church Fathers who together bear witness to the passing on of the Apostolic Tradition, though their private theological opinions on certain matters are open to question. Study the Church Fathers, and you'll see that what they taught in unison contradicts "Cauvnism."

I had to dig through centuries of lies, redirection and masking to "know him by his works". The sheer volume of coverup to either deny his evil works or sugar coat or "forget" is mind boggling. But you'd run into the same thing digging into any cult leader or head figure of a false religion. The stuff I've compiled the past 6 years is too much for a post but too little for a book. Converts are very rare to such extremist populations, so even if 60% of their offspring remain in the faith, their genetic diversity is on a constant downhill slope. So even if Amish couples are still be having an average seven kids per couple, only 4 or 5 will remain Amish-- and of those, one or two of them will be too disabled to marry and reproduce. Let's not forget that of the 2 or 3 healthy kids who stay in the community, half of them will be carriers of the same genetic disease that took their siblings out of the breeding pool. This means that if they marry within their community, they're likely to have a spouse who carries the same deleterious alleles for that disease OR SOME OTHER ENDEMIC GENETIC DISEASE! Reproductive technology such as gamete donation or IVF with genetic screening might get them out of this bind IF the Amish would be willing to accept such solutions, but that's a big if. www.biochemgenetics.ca/plainpeople/view.php TL; DR -- I'm not worried about an Amish Great Replacement.

Awesome lecture. One thing as an issue spot, the people the Cardinal was calling brothers and sisters were in fact brothers and sisters, they were part of the Roman Catholic Church thus they could and should be called such, this point is shown in topic number two where it's mentioned that they had left the Catholic Church. Calling someone somethin . That they are not is the the new language of Vatican 2. The separated brethren were never brethren as they were never part of the Roman Catholic Church as the originals were. Thus Luther, Calvin, Zwingli etc. for whatever reasons they left, left. Love warns as well and we have the warning in Galatians 5:20 that no heresy or dissenter will inherit the kingdom. Heresy here is a sect in this case a religious sect, the Wbster Dictionary defines this as a denomination. Thus protestantism is denominationalism So the Cardinal was right in what he wrote but the speaker takes it out of context to fit a narrative. Lords Blessings

I can’t agree more with your following statement. In fact who else would disagree with you in this : “Faith and works are not in competition; those works which are decried by the Apostle Paul and His letters are actions by which we attempt to gain God's favor apart from Christ. It was these kind of works that Paul was condemning in Romans and Galatians but that's different than works which flow from grace and faith. Those works are pleasing to God because they complete the faith that was His initial gift in the first place. These faith filled works are a manifestation of the glory of God.” Obviously this statement is consistent with Ephesians 2:10 referred in the letter of bishop Salado in exchange to Calvin: “For we are His creation, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time so that we should walk in them.” Also with Titus 2:14: “who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.” However, here is my question. Each verse the bishop mentioned has preconditions: Ephesians 2:8-9 “For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift - not from works, so that no one can boast. Also, Titus 3:4-5 “But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit” Did you notice the tense “he saved us”? We all agree we need to do good works. But, the difference is whether you do good works because you are already saved by God’s grace or to be saved. I mean do you have assurance of salvation to go heaven? (Remember Jesus died so that we may live with confidence of salvation. “Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.” Heb 2:14-15) If not, how your trying to do good to be righteous is different from those works by which you attempt to gain God's favor? “I do not treat the grace of God as meaningless. For if keeping the law could make us right with God, then there was no need for Christ to die.” (Gal 2:21 NLT) “For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from God's grace.” (Gal 5:4 NLT)

Well this is the lie of modernity and nominalism that a man can "will" or "intend" something and not actually follow it up with anything. I mean, do you know, feel, understand, do you desire the love of God? Or do you simply assent to it, but your actual understanding is that God is distant, indifferent, not pleased, not amused, not desirable? The lie is that man can this way split himself in half, and "believe" only in part. You, as a modernist, postulate an independent "inner self" that is unchanging and unchangeable and can (or can not) voluntarily act to do good. And therefore there is no difference between attempting to gain favor and being righteous. It's like there was an eternal you coming to terms with an eternal God, but even more the other way around. The true gospel means that the act or the attempt of preserving the idea of the "inner self" while doing good means you have fallen away from grace. Whereas if you give up the ontological myth of an "inner self" and see your very self as a gift that is not of yourself but ultimately from God, all your deeds will share in and stem from the gift nature of that relationship. There will be no distinct and deliberate service or performance, voluntarily chosen in some kind of independent ideal freedom, of anything, of any kind, anymore.

Calvinist theology has the silly pretention of 'protecting' God's glory - its arguments about 'sovereignty' are born out of the iconoclast hubris of protestantism - already so manifest in Luther - the iconoclastic mindset is the cheapest way of acquiring a sense of personal purity, which ends up creating a prideful mentality of self-importance

SIL Your missing the true understanding of the "protestantism" heart, it is out of the love for the rcc brothers and sisters and the truth that this "iconoclastic mindset" abounds in which the by product is personal purity perhaps not a pridefull mentality , perhaps a little self importance , for it is extremely lmportant especially in this case to stand for what is right and true. And yes it is not a silly pretense to protect Gods glory as if it needs to be is beside the matter.

While Catholicism has so much to recommend it, and I often turn to Catholic sources for guidance and inspiration, its failure to treat women as equal human beings makes it a no go as a church for families with daughters. If I had black children I could never take them to a church that did not allow black people in leadership roles. Likewise I cannot do such a thing for my daughters. I do deeply appreciate those who make their content available for us to learn from and enjoy. We pray for the day when all churches look at their fellow humans as true brothers, sisters, equals 💗

The church does treat women equally. There are roles within the church that are rooted in tradition (ie priests) but there are women who participate in the mass. There are also priests of many races. As for the tradition of priests being male. They anchor it on Christ choosing male apostles. At this time the church has not discerned anything from the Holy Spirit if this should be changed. This does not lower the status of women within the church. Women can do readings, be Eucharistic ministers, usher, choir, participate in ministries, and help with the functions of the parish. I know protestant churches which are even more suppressive of Womens participation in church.

Put your trust in Jesus Christ alone - not traditions or dogmas. No man is perfect and no man is savior. Only Jesus Christ, whom we put our faith in by Gods good grace and mercy. Even our Faith is a gift from God. May God have mercy on us and transform our hard heart so that we may love and treasure Christ Jesus as He deserves.

@@timothykring4772 What About Love? 1 Corinthians 13:13, “So faith, hope, love abide, these three, but the greatest of these is faith.” NO! The greatest of these is love! But, if we are saved by faith, and faith alone - which means love has absolutely nothing to do with our salvation - then why does God’s Word say that love is greater than faith? Think about it - the greatest thing that can ever happen to a person is to spend eternity in Heaven with God. If the only way to do that is by faith, and faith alone, then faith should be greater than love. But the Word of God tells us otherwise... Also, if faith alone (sola € de) saves us, then that means I can break the two greatest Commandments - love God above all else and love my neighbor as myself - and still be saved. Does that make any sense at all?! Oh, sure, I should love God and my neighbor, but the thing is, if sola € de is true, I don’t have to love God, or my neighbor, and I can still be saved...as long as I have faith. Faith Alone is contrary to common sense. It also contrary to Scripture sense. “And if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.” (1 Cor 13:2) “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision or uncircumcision is of any avail, but faith working through love.” (Galatians 5:6). “And this is His commandment, that we should believe in the Name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another.” In order to be saved, we need to believe and love - faith and works - not just have faith alone. Salvation by faith alone (sola € de) is THE core belief of many denominations. Yet, there is only one passage in all of Scripture where the phrase “faith alone” appears: James 2:24, “You see that a man is justiƒ ed [saved] by works, and not by faith alone.” Why does the Holy Spirit inspire James to write the exact opposite of this dogma of sola € de? “So faith, by itself, is dead,” (James 2:17). “Faith, apart from works, is barren,” (James 2:20). “For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so faith apart from works is dead,” (James 2:26). Did you catch that analogy? Just as body and spirit are necessary for physical life, so faith and works are necessary for spiritual life. Faith alone does not save. “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God - not because of works, lest any man should boast,” (Ephesians 2:8-9). “Amen!” says the Catholic. But many people seem to forget that, Paul, who wrote Ephesians 2:8-9, also wrote Ephesians 2:10, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” God has prepared for each of us a set of good works that we should walk in them. So, it is God’s will that we do these works. And, if we don’t do God’s will for our lives, what happens? “Not every one who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but he who does the will of My Father Who is in Heaven.” The Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30) Finally, the Parable of the Talents slams the door shut on salvation by faith alone. The two servants who do something with what their master has given them, enter into the joy of their master...they are saved. The one servant, who though he believes in his master, does nothing with what his master has given him. What happens? Is he saved? Does he enter into his master’s joy? No! He is cast into the outer darkness where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth. “If we love one another, God abides in us and His love is perfected in us,” (1 John 4:12)

Well, the only thing is discussed here is his view why he went to the system of religion he loves and he figures as a true christianity over what now he thinks is wrong, in his case, calvinism. As everyone going to catholicism from any "protestant" church, what we see is their impression of ritual sacraments being the main reason to their decition. Catholics hate the bible because they love more their pagan-gnostic talked traditions, that's it. One holy and apostolic? You wont be saved by telling those words to yourselves as if by that you belong to the true church, if you don't obey God's commandments in God's bible you will be rejected at the end. That's why catholic church is not true church you reject God's words in God's bible because you all love men made traditions. Pagan-gnostic traditions.

So what was Calvin? What he professed (TULIP) was unheard of in Christendom for 1500 years. Do you honestly believe that Christ waited all that time to send the promised Paraclete to a deluded academician? Common sense alone tells me no. I suppose Calvinism is enticing, since it offers a free ticket to heaven.

Calvin justified capital punishment of heretics with Leviticus 24:16. “The one who blasphemes the name of the Lord should be put to death; all the congregation must stone him. Any foreigner or native who blasphemes the Name should be put to death.” Jesus’ teaching to “love your enemies” didn’t stop Calvin from killing them. Paul’s instructions for dealing with people who theologically disagree with you were ignored: “A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people. Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth” (2 Timothy 2:24-25). Calvin authorized beheadings, death by fire, and torture rather than exercise patience and kindness with competing theologians. His enforcement of biblical doctrines looked more like ISIS than Jesus.

    1. In his Preface To The Reader, SUBJECT OF THE PRESENT WORK, [prefixed to the French edition, published at Geneva in 1545], John Calvin stated that (A) not he, but God was the actual author of the Institutes of the Christian Religion and that therefore, (B) the Institutes should be memorized first before reading the Bible, in order that the reading of the latter might then become "profitable": (A) "And since we are bound to acknowledge that all truth and sound doctrine proceed from God, I [John Calvin] will venture boldly to declare what I think of this work [the Institutes], ACKNOWLEDGING IT TO BE GOD'S WORK RATHER THAN MINE ..." (B) "My opinion of the work then is this: I EXHORT ALL, WHO REVERENCE THE WORD OF THE LORD, TO READ IT [the Institutes], AND DILIGENTLY IMPRINT IT ON THEIR MEMORY, IF THEY WOULD IN THE FIRST PLACE, HAVE A SUMMARY OF CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE, and, in the second place, an introduction to the profitable reading both of the Old and New Testament." [Beveridge translation, Page 22, Paragraph 6, ntslibrary website, Institutes of the Christian Religion, pdf page 30 of 944] 2. Contrast (A) the following excerpt from John Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion with (B) two verses from the prophet Ezekiel: (A) Book III, Chapter 21, No. 7: "We say, then, that Scripture clearly proves this much, that God by his eternal and immutable counsel determined once for all those whom it was his PLEASURE one day to admit to salvation, and those whom, on the other hand, it was his PLEASURE to doom to destruction." [Beveridge translation, P. 571, ntslibrary website, Institutes of the Christian Religion, pdf page 579 of 944] (B) Ezekiel, Chapter 18, Verses 23, 32 (ESV): "Have I any PLEASURE in the death of the wicked, declares the Lord GOD, and not rather that he should turn from his way and live? ... For I have NO PLEASURE in the death of anyone, declares the Lord GOD; so turn, and live.” 3. In historian Will Durant's chapter on Calvin in his The Story of Civilization series, after enumerating all of John Calvin's many accomplishments, he delivered his estimation: "... but we shall always find it hard to love the man who darkened the human soul with the most absurd and blasphemous conception of God in all the long and honored history of nonsense."
