Calorimetry

051 - Calorimetry
In this video Paul Andersen describes the history of calorimetry and explains how it can be used to measure energy changes in a system. The specific heat of water is well established and so as a system releases or absorbs energy from a surrounding water bath it can be measured. Calorimeters can be used to measure the specific heat capacity of a substance as well as the enthalpy of fusion, vaporization, and reaction.

Thank you so much for explaining this concept so clearly. My daughter has grasped this concept in a better way because of the specificity with which you have explained this topic. Students should refer to such videos.

One slight point of attention. even though of course temperature differences on a celsius and kelvin scale are the same, you did not make that specific when you filled in the equation on both sides. (so now you see C on one side and K on the other, which of course only works for the equation which contains delta T

For the equation you derive from q=mDTc, doesn't q represent heat in joules and c specific heat capacity? As you show, the rearrangement would be c=q/(m)(DT), but where c is finding the specific heat capacity, and q is the heat in joules. Both ways to solve the math are right, I think the variables are just mislabeled or misleading in this example, or maybe it's just the way I learned from my textbook that has changed since 2013.Any ideas?

unless the specific heat of water uses degrees celsius, don't you need to convert the temperature change to kelvin to make the units match?

+Milk Man Actually the units are interchangeable since there is a 1:1 ratio between the two units, i.e., a change in 1 degree Celsius is equivalent to a change in 1 Kelvin. So, c = 4.18 J/g*C OR 4.18 J/g*K

They have good graphics good animation good way of explaining .so u r perfect ut knowledge is perfect .but for a teacher having a knowledge is not sufficient he must be a entertainer too. He must know the way by which his students understand as well as enjoy the topic .so good luck ...I am kapil siidiqui 17 old .from India. And yeah u doing awesome .my friends are watching u too .
