Calls for Labor to ‘lift the ban’ on nuclear to further discussion

Liberal MP Keith Wolahan has questioned what Labor “have to fear” in lifting the ban on nuclear energy.
Mr Wolahan’s comments come as the CSIRO and AEMO predicted a large-scale nuclear reactor would cost around $16 billion.
The 2024 GenCost report claims nuclear energy would be around twice the cost of renewable alternatives.
The Liberal MP said the Liberals will have their “detailed response” in due course.
“We ask the Labor party what do you have to fear in lifting the ban,” Mr Wolahan told Sky News Australia.
“Let the private sector along with other bodies do the maths on this.”

the reason reactors are so expensive and slow to build is because of excessive legislation. if the government wasn't so incompetent nuclear wouldn't be so expensive. there is numerous examples, Japan built a multi-reactor plant in 6 (correction 39) months for a fraction of a new fossil fuel plant.

Isn’t it amazing that those who profess a desire to save the planet for some reason don’t wish our country to have cheaper more reliable emissions free nuclear energy? An energy technology that has already been proven to be the cheapest, most reliable, longest lasting, most cost effective, safest, smallest footprint, least environmental impacting, base load energy option around the world. Every country that has included nuclear has the cheapest most reliable energy anywhere in the world and they are thriving and prosperous. What’s behind the Greens denial of these facts? Why don’t they want humans to thrive? Perhaps the Greens believe it up to them to decide who suffers and how many people should be removed from this planet in order to maintain their funding. 😎👍👊🇦🇺

The LNP have painted themselves into a corner with nuclear, at first they were hoping that SMRs would be the silver bullet but that fell into a heap as we predicted. So now they HAVE to go conventional which is far too slow to build and way too expensive as we have been saying all the time. And since the LNP started this farcical distraction solar has halved in price and so have batteries (as we kept telling you they would). Very funny.

Most of the inhabitants of Fukushima AFAIK are not living around the area of their 1960s nuclear reactors. If you feel that way I suggest you move to Fukushima there are plenty of vacant homes that are fully furnished. The Japanese government say its safe to live there ! Enjoy ! 😉 It's extremely quiet and peaceful! There is tonnes of free food although the used by date is probably way past the used by date.

OLKILUOTO 3 nuclear reactor cost $18 billion. Bare in mind that this price was when it would have been cheaper to build. The Bulgarian mafia was involved in its construction (allegedly) They blackmailed the welders. Were the legal cost incorporated into the governments costs? The debacle created a legal nightmare. Areva fought over liability of cost blowouts with Siemens. I see the cost blowout of the French built Flamanville 3 reactor apparently its estimated to be 5 times 5 x its initial estimated cost at a whopping 31 billion. They blame "optimism bias" as the culprit but I think it the tenderer knows its going to be mighty expensive they just want to win the contract. I dont know how taxpayers wont be paying for nuclear power. No way insurance companies will be on the hook to pay for nuclear disasters. AMERICA created the Price Anderson Act to absolve insurance companies of any responsibility lest their be a major nuclear disaster. The truth is still hidden to some extent on nuclear power. We're not a major nuclear power. We don't really have the experience of running fullscale nuclear reactors. It doesnt make sense to build small modular nuclear reactors. If you're going to build reactors you build it full size. The nuclear pundits keep saying nuclear is clean energy. Sure you can't see the emissions. Is it really clean? You need diesal to mine Uranium ore and that should be taken into consideration. Also the toxic processes of refining Uranium ore into uranium pellets should also be factored into the equation. Nothing is truelly green energy even solar and wind turbines. Solar panels are inefficient at producing electricity on a scale thats needed for cities. I've always been sceptical of pro nuclear pundits because they always lie. Our wisest choice would be to just build more coal plants. That would be sensible and rational.
