Most calls for regulation, coming from any industry is usually an attempt to create barriers to competition. Let freedom ring and buyers use common sense in purchasing and use. Failure to do so creates it's own "Stupid Tax".

Agreed that dive systems should be regulated with regard to dive gear servicing, in the same way that pressure vessels have to be inspected and certified. Do boat owners who are using a hookah to clean props and hulls really need to be certificated divers? I think not. I see commercial divers jumping up and down with regard to lost revenue if boat owners get into cleaning their own hulls and props, and other underwater inspections of their boats. How many actual people are ending up in recompression chambers as a result of these shallow-water hookahs?

Excellent point. Like cleaning my 5 foot deep pond! This economic illiterate wants me to take a course, and recerts, and then only buy from an "approved" seller of compressors, tubes and regulators? Foolish.

When an industry tries to regulate their competitors away. Let me sign a waiver and sell me what I want.

So you might not be a fan of hookah. But what if there is no other option? I do gold dredging and we use hookah set ups because we run for hours on end and there’s no way we could use tanks.

They can be good for boat maintenance. You don’t need to be certified or break out all of the gear to go and scrub your hull, or clear a fouled prop. They have benefits, but if people are getting hurt because they don’t know what they are buying then Something needs to be done.

Shocking that companies who are well established manufacturing a product would want onerous restrictions and limitations on new competitors to the market. 🤔. Sounds just like established businesses calling for ridiculous minimum wages. Surely it can't be to stymie competition.

As a certified advanced diver I think there are great Hookah units out there, but the dangers are taken too lightly. At 10 feet deep, breathing compressed air can still kill you if you don't take it serious, let alone at 30 feet. And biggest the risk is that in case of material failure the precautions that should be taken to prevent injury or death from 30 feet deep are not just understood by watching a video after buying the unit. These "toys" can be deathly if not taken serious. And their popularity is growing, so we will see the lawsuits rolling in because of injury and even death, and then even for a 10 foot deep unit a certification will be required before you can buy it. Now, personally, as a certified diver understanding the risks, I think that with a spare air clipped on the belt, a well designed (!!) hookah system can be used safely. My wife and I just bought a small sailboat that we are planning taking out along the Florida Keys, the coast of Belize, the sea of Cortez over the upcoming years, and a Hookah system of a reputable brand would allow us a lot of freedom to dive. But indeed, there are too many "China-made" systems out there that can be really dangerous, and they are being sold as harmless toys which will get lots of people hurt or killed.

what are some of the great hookah systems out there in your opinion? Im looking at them for work as we are rarely would go below 10 feet but certainly rarely to never below 30 feet. we work clearing area waterways of hazards. Recently we removed some rebar from the downtown water feature in dayton ohio. The base was below snorkel depth. A hookah system would have been wonderful to have. I am still goign to get scuba certified but it would be nice not to run through tanks, especially in remote locations.

Some people may not be physically fit to carry tanks on their back, but a hookah is the means in which a person like myself can derive some underwater enjoyment.PADI,SSI might not certify me for tank diving but if PADI and SSI are willing to expand their minds,then I can become the aquanaut and broaden my horizons. So my question is what's it going to be? The subculture elbowing there way in with the good hookah,the counterculture marketing the bad goods or the culture of society making a place for all to enjoy.

OH, that kind of Hookah. I thought you were talking about the other kind.

Actually, anyone can buy a full SCUBA gear and go diving without any training - divingshops don't ask to see a diving certificate - real problem is that all manufators - even to 'serious' one - market the product as a 'for every one, even without certificate' - which is NOT true - ALL diving requires training and education.

no not all diving should require it. its certainly NOT for the government to do so. Should people get certified? Yes. However it should not be required.

The lack of servicing requirement is stupid considering in Australia you need to have tanks tested every year.

Sounds like fear mongering and will only serve to add to the cost. My own review of the company is all I need

There a some safe premade 'Hookah' style systems like the Blu3, Airbuddy and Third Lung systems readily available, which I am keen to try. However, with these 'mishmash' systems that are put together with autoparts etc are just complete death traps, and are common globally but mainly in Latin America and the Asia Pacific regions due to cheap parts on the markets over there. For the cost of a Hookah System that is in the mishmash category you can purchase a small pony tank (not the Spare Air systems) for the same price or near enough, which are immensely safer and easier to maintain. So there are pros and cons to the Hookah System, its just how its made.

bingo im sick of being enslaved to a different master yet people want more of it not seeing the rabbit hole its become.

Love the idea but think that u should be a diver in order to operate and own one. We have to be cert in order to fill cylinders, maintaining the machinery and parts....so why not this kind of unit. Crazy

Yes we do need to regulate this, people are getting hurt buying unsafe products made by greedy people. This would only "limit the freedom" of greedy bastards that profit from the death of unknowing consumers.

you are clueless with this nonsense. no it limits the freedom of the people to decide what to do with their lives. The more fools that scream for more regulations and interference from the government the more enslaved we become.

Two points first point , I both agree with regular professional servicing and disagree other diving industries being woke about the use of hookah systems ( as long as they cannot go below 10 m ( 30 ft ) . Anyone in their right mind would not use these without a form of scuba training , snorkel divers holding breath and going to depths of 20m or more is far more dangerous IMHO. MY SECOND POINT IS , A lot of Qualified Divers of a certain age , would benefit from a shallow water scuba system when going abroad into warm climates with clear water with a system that they can carry on a plane as hand luggage ( super huka comes to mind ) rather than don the usual weighty equipment , not easy for some 65+ year old divers who still like to dabble . For the experienced just sell the systems on proof of qualifications .

why should we have to show proof of qualifications to purchase and use something? thats rather silly. While training is a good idea, its stilly to have it be required.
