FAT & Appalling OR Just PREGNANT? 🤰

Ойын-сауық

Welcome to episode 10 of "Sarah, My Story" book review series hosted by Shauna from The Vintage Read Show.
In this 10th episode, Fergie is pregnant with Beatrice and she describes herself (sadly) as "fat and appalling". Sarah struggles as she leaves 6-week-old Beatrice behind to go on a Royal tour and Fergiemania is definitely over as the press turns on her...
I will be reviewing Sarah Ferguson's book in detail every Monday!
See you in the comments!

American Navy (retired) wife here. The difference between us and Fergie is that we are not dealing with the separation of deployment alone. We are either near the base with other wives in the same position or we’ve gone home to be with family. I’m sure it must be harder being the only one around in the deployment situation.

Well said, fortunately Princess Catherine was extremely lucky in being with Prince William when he was stationed on the island of Anglesey. Where they could enjoy each other's company in the first stage of their marriage. Some Military Wives are not as fortunate.

Canadian Army wife here (Retired). Thank you for your thoughtful perspective. All spouses of all ranks need to be considered. Hers was truly a unique position. I met her by accident once on a base. I actually felt like she, at least for a moment, was one of us. I just don’t think she knew how to form a support group for herself or even was able to because of who she was. Isolation has many faces.

I have a lot of sympathy for Fergie listening to this. How awful to become a royal wife and be left all alone. Then become a royal mother and be left all alone. Given her personality she was bound to get into trouble.

The difference between the late Queen's pregnancies and Fergies is that Elizabeth had her mother, father and sister with her. She wasn't completely alone whereas fergie was. Most Navy Wives live where their husband's ship is based and can socialise with other Wives.

I honestly felt terrible for Fergie being subjected to ridicule for her pregnancy weight gain. She probably made the mistake of thinking that she was eating for two (adults), but maybe she also did some comfort eating sitting home alone missing Andrew. I've never been a fan of Andrew, and after hearing how insensitive he was to Fergie following Beatrice's birth, I like him even less. How wonderful it could have been for Fergie to recuperate at Queen Noor's vacant home, recover from popping her stitches, bond with her new baby and spend some blissful time with her husband before he left again for sea. Her decision to go off on a royal tour with Andrew and leaving six-month-old Beatrice at home to rekindle her relationship with Andrew may have signaled the beginning of the end of their marriage. Thanks for another great chapter review, Shauna. I look forward to your next installment!

When Sarah was a Weight Watchers ambassador she said she believed she was never going to lose the weight, that she had lost control. In the 90s and the 2000s, she cut out sugar and stuck to a straightforward exercise regime to achieve a very slim figure. Sarah said, "It took courage to deal with her weight because every time there was a 'Duchess of Pork' or 'Fat Frumpy Fergie' headline, they didn't have any idea they were reaching to the depths of her soul". It is hard to feel sorry for Sarah over the past 20 years, but this name-calling was a form of bullying that wasn't fairly dealt with and frankly was not good form. Also being compared to a rather unhealthy Princess Diana was always unfair.

Yes I assumed she meant there was a bigger story than her affair that was being ignored or wasn’t known. It probably would have been one of Diana’s affairs, or maybe Chuck and Camilla. But Diana cheated first so maybe it’s about her. I can’t imagine any of the other royals being ‘a bigger story’ than her scandal. The press by that point weren’t very interested in the elder royals, and people knew about Margaret’s wild times and Phillip’s alleged philandering. The only other thing I could think of is maybe the Queen’s alleged flirtation with Porchie… but I don’t think that was anything more than her being flattered or maybe a little crush that went nowhere.

I agree, the two by the pool are Fergie and her friend/adviser. So basically, Fergie was saying that she was having her story of the pool disaster scene played out in public when someone/something was going on with someone else that was a much bigger story. I think it was Diana, there are some really juicy stories that others have alluded to, but no one has come out and said directly.

I do think the entire York clan was much more in the Harkle camp pre Megsit than they are today - well the ladies. Beatrice seems to have fallen off first - I’m excited for her if what River reports is true that Charles is giving her a trial run as a WR, I’ll be looking out for her at a garden party this summer. I feel she’s really matured with her marriage to Edo, she seems to be keeping much closer to the London/Windsor based side of the family recently, and I’ve grown to like her. Eugenie, I’m still skeptical about, though she also seems to have distanced herself somewhat - I think in her case her hubby’s career when he was promoting Casamigos was too tied to Soho House and the MAs of the world, not sure since he’s changed lanes. I think Sarah’s always just chasing whatever keeps her relevant and in the papers. Adding, I do think some of the members of the RF “the monarchy” becomes a far too personal thing - particularly those not in the direct line. They envision their importance as far larger than it actually is. Both the current “spares” seem to have been infected with this sense of over inflated self importance to the monarchy as a whole - Harry & Andrew.

Anne was mostly at Gatcombe Park, children had been packed off to boarding school by 1988 when Beatrice was born, Laurence equerry from 86-88, seems difficult to imagine it could be those two. More likely one of Diana’s many amores. Seems odd Diana would cut Fergie off about verrucas! Much more likely she was worried (terrified) about that ‘hint’ in the book and afraid Fergie was dangerous for her. Curious I wonder had D lived how long it would have taken for the truth of her ‘affairs’ to come out and her toppling from her pedestal. Fergie was DEFINITELY dangerous to Diana

This chapter adds another layer to Sarah’s personality. From your reading, it appears she has ADD or ADHD because she is always on the go, busy, inappropriately energetic, unfocused, and annoying. Perhaps her excessive drinking was self medicating behaviour to take the edge off her boredom, her ADD or her depression. As well, how awful to be married or to be pregnant and not be with your husband. The beginning of her marriage sounds terribly lonely. I find it telling that it took a while before the couple found a house in Windsor to nest in. Sounds like neither Andrew or Sarah understood how to build a family because they lived in Buckingham Palace as if they were living separate lives. As well, the pressure of having her appearance or weight mocked in the press must have been awful. And as far as the press having to always go create a good vs bad Royal I can see that storyline in the Catherine vs Meghan; Elizabeth vs Margaret; William vs Harry and so on. It is a journalist’s easiest plot device isn’t it? Right now I’m beginning to feel a void in the stories being reported in that Catherine is off the radar. Who shall fill in the gap? The tabloids are still putting forth Harry vs the King but that’s getting boring. Back to Fergie….this chapter makes it easy to see why she ended up having affairs.

I have to giggle a bit, because it's like we're a houseful of little kids waiting for our bedtime story! Also, I love your interviews. All of your guests are on my favorite list. Can we submit the names of some other KZreadrs we love as suggestions to interview? Of course, they would be only at your discretion, and some will be much easier to accept than others. I loved your talk with all of them so far, but Andrew Gold is one of my favorites. He is close to my son's age, so listening to him is somewhat comforting as I miss my son so much. Could we send you some questions for some of your upcoming guests? However, you probably like the surprise element in introducing them. Wouldn't it be a hoot to land HG Tudor! If anyone could do it, it would be YOU! You made a good call on Kitty Kelley's book. That looked more like a university textbook! Looking at how large that book it would give me a panic attack. Thanks for all, Suzanne in Texas!

I would caution anyone to take Sarah's book with a healthy grain of salt, in the same way most people regard Spare. There is plenty of documentation online of Sarah in that era taking off by herself with Steve Wyatt's social circle and other invitations for weekends/vacations, etc. and leaving the children behind when they were still quite young. She liked a drink, but she had other longtime habits, as Kitty Kelley mentions in her book. That may have been something that added to her up and down emotional state, her unpredictable behavior in public, and her reactions to what was going on around her.

I think the “poolside” passage you were inquiring about relates to the toe sucking photo between the Texan and Fergie herself. When she references the “real” story the press missed, I think she’s talking about courtiers tipping off the press about her and the Texan’s whereabouts (which enabled the toe sucking photograph). She contends that in doing so, a staff member of the palace “undermined the monarchy itself” (in reputation and thereby existence). Such a fan! Thanks for another great video.

I really don't get the idea of "bad royal good royal" going through the press. While the press has been invasive and pushy at times, it does seem that they played on existing prejudices and stereotypes of actual events. It clearly isn't fair to complain about a pregnant woman's weight or call her ugly. I have never liked any celebrity story where the focus is to call someone "ugly", because that's subjective. But unfortunately, Sarah did indulge in a lot of food and alcohol in front of people, and she seems to be saying that she indulged more when unseen. Sarah does make my skin crawl at times.

Okay, here's my theory about the remarks about "two consenting adults by a pool" and a purportedly "missed" story that might threaten the monarchy. She's trying to set up another juicy book. Others have intimated that they have stories they haven't yet shared which would be damaging to the monarchy (drama-ceto), and Fergie does write a few books hither and thither.

While it is interesting. I do not think a royal should write a book and spill on private affairs. That is very tacky. I also think she was her own worst enemy. Control yourself. She's a bit pathetic comparing her going on a tour, to the Queen, and Queen mother. Their position for attending, as Queen, and wife of the King, are a bit more important. It would have been quite understandable if, not even Heir, but Spares wife sat it out, after birth. Excuses if you ask me.

Every blood vessels in my eyes were burst & bright red, couldn’t see any whites of my eyes. The bad part: no one told me what my eyes looked like. When I went to the restroom for the first time after delivery, I looked in the mirror and began to scream hysterically! The RNs ran in and just couldn’t believe that no one had warned me!!!! Much respect for all mothers! Happy Mothers Day y’all.

I woke up, hit the head, put the coffee together to “cook”, came back into the bedroom, picked up my phone & was delighted to see you posted a new chapter….but when I opened it….I thought, Oh, what fresh hell is this?😁 I have never seen a Live quite like it. How the heck did I miss the notification? What’s the time difference? Which time zone, of Australia do you live? I’m sure people from different time zones & countries were delighted to live chat with you! If I had come in at the beginning, while having my coffee, I’d be delighted. I don’t usually communicate until I’m halfway thru my coffee. I made it with 2 shots of espresso. I’m following a trial over here so, there’ll be no time to nap. Back to Sarah ~ If we knew what year it happened maybe we can figure it out?, the identity of the Royal? Thanks, again, for the new chapter. I like Fergie. I do NOT mean to make this a conspiracy theory. About the leaks, it wouldn’t surprise me if Andrew shared gossip with Fergie, who in turn, shared it with the 2 girls. And, they talked to H&MM. Thanks, again! Patty fm Philly.

Surprisingly, this book is making me judge S harshly - whereas before I held her in regard because we all know it's not easy living in a goldfish bowl. In this book it's so obvious that S thinks everyone should love her just 'the way she is ' - which is a fake people pleaser - that's not being genuine when you use it as your DEFAULT MODE for all your social, personal & professional interactions- at the end of the day this chronic manipulation! And you know what? Who gives a toss if you're called Duchess of Pork - when you've been fine wineing & dining at t best establishments in London & globally! But of course, S wants her cake & to eat it too 😂

  • @ongjanette

People pleasers would always feel that they are MORE acrutinized. Or at least that's how i would interpret her "feeling the tension whenever she walked into a room"... who's to say it's not just her feeling it. But then the way that pans out is it becomes self-prophetic when the awkwardness is aggravated by self-consciousness wch in itself is a gaffe-magnet. For some reason, the way Fergie describes herself in her book, she comes across as very self-aware and caring, but in everything that the public had observed of her, not just strictly reported, but i mean real witnessed actions and interactions with the public, she can be oblivious and crass and uppity. I have no doubt she can be charming whenever and to whomever she wants to be, though.

While she's missing Andrew, he doesn't seem to be making it up to her on his return. He was just as selfish on the honeymoon after the wedding. Sarah also seems to be her own worst enemy, taking on work, when she didn't have to, whatever the reason was. The reason she could take on the work, is because of the help available to her in Nanny care. I'm not feeling as sorry. She should have known the press were like vultures then, that they'd pick on her baby weight after birth. Comparing her to Diana, and other Royals women.

I'm not sure if I have missed it, whether it is still to come or Fergie has 'forgotten', but I happen to know an Officer who was ranked higher than P. Andrew in the Navy. He was at sea with him and told me that PA used to be extremely annoying. I'm informed that when the ship was going into a port, PA would ask others to swap shifts so that he could disembark and meet Fergie who would fly there in advance. I'm sure that many of the crew would have loved to fly their wives around, and to add insult to injury, PA wouldn't carry out his part of the deal! With regards to the "By the pool" comment, I have a feeling that I know who it concerns. The clue is in the 'consenting adults'. It is common knowledge in the gay community that one member of the family had explored 'other aspects of their sexuality' before settling down. I can't say more than that as it will break a confidence.
