California's Vacant County, Alpine County, Doug Berry

Музыка

Doug Berry of the Eastern Sierra region of California and Nevada visits the mostly empty county of Alpine. Starting with a road trip from Hawthorne, Nevada we head up US 395 to CA Highway 89 over 8,314' Monitor Pass along the upper reaches of the Carson River to Markleeville, California. The town has only 200 people, while the entire county has a mere 1,200 residents...in fact, there isn't even one single stop light in Alpine County, California!

    It seems like every time I watch one of your videos Doug it brings back a great memory for me. I actually drove a 27ft Allegro motorhome over Monitor Pass from Markleeville down to Lake Topaz in 1997. I was with my family, father and my stepmother. I was taking my dad to Gabbs so he could have a visit with his brother and my aunt. I love the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Keep those videos coming as I thoroughly enjoy them!

    Hi Kellie & Doug, Alpine County is the home of one of the hardest one-day bicycle rides in the US. The CA "Death Ride" in July now over 40 years old. Monitor Pass only one of the summits on a route that covers over 100 miles and 14,000 feet of elevation gain. Not for the faint of heart or legs!

    Ok, I am impressed; SEVEN times on the Death Ride...wow, you must be an athlete! I enjoy cycling too, because you are so close to the landscapes you pass thru, the fresh air, the sounds of nature, and the exercise. No income tax on the Nevada side, plus less regulations and generally more retirement friendly...you could live on the border if you would like , and can spend a lot of time in the best parts of California and keep more of your hard earned retirement (I'm sure you knew that). Thank you for coming along, I bet you are a very exceptional cyclist!

    Hello my Brother, your nice comment made my day! Actually, although they look and smell like roses, they are cold winter loving peonies. They come up every year like clockwork and live pretty much forever. Kellie sure does put out the big spread; and the amazing feat is all that food got eaten! The fireworks were down the street at the El Capitan Casino for our recent Armed Forces Day celebrations; which I enjoyed. Besides, it won't be all that long until the 4th, as summer will be here before we know it! 🇺🇸🐴🫏🚂

    Hello Doug and Kellie from Clearlake, Ca. I enjoyed your run to and tour of Markleeville. Hopefully my lady and I can visit that beautiful spot some time during great weather like you two had. We did make it to Hawthorne 3 years ago, didn't get there until about 3:30 in the afternoon. Luckily for us, we just arrived as the very nice elderly lady in charge (of the Ordinance Museum) was closing, and she graciously let us spend quite some time seeing everything there. It was great! Hope to get back to your neck of the woods soon. Meanwhile, please continue posting your adventures, they are appreciated!

    When I was living in Tahoe I noticed there was a weekly jam in Markleeville, I believe that was on the main road there. But I did not see a likely place on your tour of the town that would accommodate one. This was around back in 2006 to 2010. And you're welcome for my viewership, but all the thanks go to you two....until the next one !!

    What a super, cool video this is. I thoroughly enjoyed *riding along with you, and Kellie. I love the way you educate us, in so many ways, in your videos, Doug. That covers wildlife, vegetarian, land formations, water sources, the population, history, and the list goes on and on. 🔥Is the county so sparsely populated due to the elevation? There did seem to be more cyclists, of one type or another, than cars... Oh, what a gorgeous place to have your splendid lunch. YUMMY... I thoroughly enjoyed viewing Markleeville. It appears to have all the major comforts people would want and need, while still maintaining that small town feeling. That's not easy to do.👏🏻👏🏻 Once more you have hit it out of the park, Doug. Although I love all of your videos, this one is one of my absolute favorites. Thank you, and Kellie for entertaining, informing, and educating many of us. BRAVO, Doug 🎊🏡🙏🏻🛣

    Hello Rhonda, you know I was waiting for you to check in; you are such a pro writer! You never let us down with all of your thoughtful and uplifting comments. Thank you! Well, according to history the major factor supporting a population in Alpine County was mining. There was even a rather large Norwegian mining settlement nearby that at one time was much much bigger than Markleeville. In fact, one could consider Markleeville to be a consolation prize for the county after all the mines petered out and most everyone left. There is no railroad, deep sea port, river delta, farming, manufacturing, military base, transcontinental interstate highway, coastline, and the ski resorts are more remote and a little smaller than nearby Tahoe. The population is mostly west in the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys along with the Bay Area. With the super high cost of living, making ends meet, and outrageous gas prices it's a wonder any Californians can even visit Alpine County at all! Economics drives a lot of these situations, so I opine, surprisingly, that Alpine County will be getting even smaller as many people are moving out of the state permanently. It is so pretty though, and I am happy you enjoyed our report on Alpine County so well. We will be going back again....stand by. 🇺🇸🧗🚣⛰️🍪

  • @rhondaz356

    @rhondaz356

    Ай бұрын

    @@CalNeva Ohhh, that explains it. The loss of the mines, and the LACK of other, potential *draws to an area, that you mentioned, make so much sense... How unfortunate it is that due to the very plausible causes you highlighted, there may be more of a decline in population in the county, as time goes on... You are absolutely right. It looks very beautiful. ***Thank you so much, Doug for clearing that up for me. 🏡🙏🏻🛣👏🏻

Markleeville not a good place to try and get gasoline on a low tank at night back when the store was not 24 Hr. A friend and I had to wait for them to open in the morning. 20:09 Courthouse AND county jail. Often in the same building in smaller places. Commit a crime in Tecopa, Inyo County and they would take you to the County Court and County Jail in way off Independence, Ca. Speaking of gasoline in isolated places like Goldfield that do not have gas stations people have to bring fuel from elsewhere and store it up at home. Likely illegal but hat else can they do?
