Live in Calgary....make good money, pay off your house within 5-10 years, now you're richer and can travel during the winter... The sun is amazing in Calgary Hoping Calgary doesn't get overcrowded ...Definitely a hidden gem.

Spent 7 of my good years in Vancouver and now living in Calgary. Have to say I do miss a couple of things in Vancouver but never really looked back.

Just came back to Vancouver from Calgary, for a family vacation. Totally agree with what you have mentioned in this video and I'd like to say Calgary wins the traffic and driving cultures also. Thinking to move to Calgary if I would have found a job. LoL..

Hi Vije! That really depends on where your career opportunity is. Vancouver is traditionally the place for the entertainment industry, however, more jobs are popping out in Calgary as well. What do you mean by affordable alternative in BC? Is this for housing or something else?

Spot on comparison. I own property in both cities. Bottom line. Vancouver is playground for the wealthy, you pay a heavy price to live there.. the PST increases your cost of living on everything..access to ocean and mountains. Calgary is a great place to live if you are in a stable profession that can withstand the cyclical nature of the oil and gas based economy. People are friendly in Calgary, very diverse and great for families to raise kids and if you can withstand the cold.

Since you know both these places - Perhaps I would like to know from you .. Someone trying to chose a university study program like an Masters MBA and then find a future which city (Location ?) and where and what universities if you know any would you recommend ? Does it make it different when choosing for education and immigration compared to buying real estate and settling down ? Would you say that and could you answer these questions ❓

@@deboraabh the value of an MBA is the connections you make while attending the school so the more prestigious the better. If you are a young person entering the workforce after university, Toronto is the best choice due to size and diversity of the job market. Calgary is a great place to raise family, vancouver for retirement.

So for the purpose of MBA obviously very high or higher ranked Univ are in the US compared to Canada then would US for University MBA be a better BET ?? (Plus that's an addition to a very high tuition) Do students then able to come to Canada from there and does that make sense ? no perhaps ? .. .. and studying in Canada makes more sense .. even if it is not very high ranked perhaps globally ..if so .. which city or location would you chose TO START THE JOURNEY ..Let alone settling down later and finding which city would be better to settle later *and would you give very HIGH weightage to as high ranked MBA WITHIN CANADA as far as possible ??* And how stingy would living in Vancouver or BC be ? Neither Vancouver or Calgary, Edmonton or Toronto, Ottawa or Montreal. How about London, Ontario? I only visited that city for a baseball tournament back in the mid 90s when I was a teenager and it was a really nice place to be. The fields were pristine, the people from other teams and the ones from London were very kind. I liked it a lot and I want to find another reason to visit London, Ontario.

Yes, we have the Children's hospital which is really close to the Foothills hospital. Its located by University District in the NW

Other than scenery I personally don't think BC offers much more than Calgary. However, it will cost you considerably more.

Vancouver has AMAZING summers, especially when you can hit the beach and chill. What I don't like about Van is the cloudy weather and not getting any sun. I think I would prefer a dryer weather but sunnier throughout the year. It's too bad housing is so expensive there though 😑

Both cities have very different vibes! I’ve lived in both cities! A shack in West Side Vancouver is at least $2,000,000, a well equipped large modern house in a good location starts at about $3,000,000!

What exactly are the things that make those vibes and are necessary or having the more vibe at ?* What is driving the market there even though it is so costly and what was it that you found was not available to match those vibes let's say in Cal ? What would be really great for making a lot of friends, being in all sorts of areas and industries and trying out new things and meeting someone and earning a lot of money ? I would take a look at your future after school and see what industry or profession you want to be in. Our tech, healthcare, & natural resources is strong here and Albertans are paid the highest income compared to all other provinces

Personally, I prefer Vancouver in terms of the lifestyle, and you get solid beaches, and closer to the mountains, and I prefer rain over snow, but Alberta wise, if I had to choose any city to live in, it'd definitely be Calgary nd be living there. Far better than deadmonton. Out of any city here in Alberta, there's so much to do in Calgary, and you're closer to the mountains which is a huge bonus for me. From Edmonton, you have to drive a minimum of two hours just to go hiking. 4 hrs + if you're hiking out in places like Canmore or Waterton.

Yea totally! Depends on lifestyle but Calgary feels like a newer city than Edmonton (IMO), and we are closer to snowboarding here! Thanks for sharing buddy!

these are my preferences moving to a new place.. mild weather condition job availability and good salary transportation telecommunication and internet speed water and electricity supply education and medical services recreation sites, beautiful surroundings and sports facilities.. low crime rates.. housing and low cost of living

I’m about to move to Canada with my daughter and didn’t know where to settle between those two cities. I lived in Vancouver for 2 years and I loved it but I’m not sure if I could ever buy a decent property over there. Might choose Calgary… thanks for this great comparison

I strongly recommend you to move to Calgary with your daughter really. I used to live in Calgary for 28 yrs and recently moved to Vancouver for my husband. Love Vancouver tho but I still recommend people to move and settle in Calgary instead . Good luck !!!

How about car insurance, house insurance and utilities (gas, electricity and water)? I have a co worker who moved from Vancouver BC to Calgary and he's saying those 3 categories I mentioned are much cheaper in BC. He said that housing is the only thing much cheaper in AB, everything else is the same or even much cheaper in BC, is that really true?

Car insurance could be around $1500 - $2000/yr depending on your record, house insurance $120 - $200/mo, and utilities probably average $500/mo. This depends on how big of home, usage, etc. but those are good rules of thumb. We also DON'T have any other tax other than GST, and no land transfer fee which that alone saves you thousands!!

Absolutely not! Jobs are coming out in Calgary especially in tech though I recognize some are still struggling to find a job. It's not nearly as bad as its made out to be.

Hi Narsimha! This past winter we had a cold snap of one week at -30. Hail storms happen often but not damaging ones. They do happen but more so in the North East and Airdrie area. I wouldn't say it's always windy, we don't find it in issue. Migraine issues are dependent on individuals but I would think a lot of people wouldn't have it

I'll take the rain. Can not do Calgary winters anymore. Dryness, chap lips, dry cracked hands, nosebleeds weekly, migraines when chinooks roll in, run the car for 20 mins before going anywhere, -40, frostbite, shoveling, shoveling and more shoveling. Plus, Calgary winters last way longer with it being cold and having snow on the ground from basically Oct 15th to May 24th (yep, its tradition to snow May long weekend in Calgary every year .... without fail) and the possibility to receive snow almost all year long. Also, Calgary is windy windy windy almost all the time. Indian Summers used to be a thing in Calgary where is was very warm and dry all through September, but those are a thing of the past. In the 16 years of living in Calgary, you definitely notice yourself and co-workers being moody and agitated by April, being stuck inside from cold weather and almost developing cabin fever type issues. One topic you forgot to cover is Activity and Leisure. Vancouver wins hands down. It is far more easier to be active year round in Vancouver, especially for people who don't like being cold. You can do the same activities in the winter here, that you do in the summer by simply adding in rain gear. Since the move to Vancouver, my wife has lost 40 pounds. Loves being able to go jogging outside with basic workout cloths from Feb, right through to Nov and only needing to add a hoodie in Dec / Jan. Packing on winter pounds and being stuck inside, is not really a thing here. Also FYI Monthly medical premiums in BC were removed as of Jan 1st 2020

Thanks for your insight and contribution my friend! I agree it was a bit of a shock how long winter lasts in Calgary. Fortunately there are the Chinook winds that gives us a break every now and then throughout the longer winters. For some, the cabin fever is definitely a real thing! Personally living in Vancouver for 12 years, I find it affected my mood more than the snow does (possibly because I get excited when it snows so I can shred some powder!) This is definitely my own opinion on it and people need to make their own judgments based on their lifestyle :) Appreciate your comments and the edit for monthly medical premiums.

People with money easily spend winters a few hours south IE California. It's a great way to escape the cold :) Living in Calgary leaves more people with more disposable income. Vancouver is grey and wet all winter and those with money do the same thing. Welcome!

Well said! This year the temperature reached -30 degree Celsius. No physical activity of any kind. Had to wear 4 layers of clothes, and life has never been so boring. It's more like you've imprisoned yourself all the time.

Lol… I am living in Vancouver for almost 10 years now and I hate it here. The only thing I actually like is the fact I work in construction and I have lots of work and my salary skyrocketed in just a few years I’m making almost triple than what I was making 7 years ago. Night life in Vancouver sucks. If you wanna have fun I don’t recommend it here. I will move to Calgary bcuz I want a house and affording a house here is impossible!

“ Everything “ in Calgary is more expensive than Vancouver except real estate and gas. Real estate is cheaper in the suburbs of Vancouver. Gas expense in Vancouver can be lower cause you drive less cause destinations are closer and btw transit is very effective and efficient. Examples of cheaper in Vancouver vs Calgary? 1. Property taxes 2. Strata management fees 3. Water is free except for commercial businesses and strata corporations. 4. Utilities overall cheaper. 5. Food cheaper.

@@LiveInnerCity That depends on the magnitude of everything. I do know properties as least double their price every 12 years in Vancouver Lower mainland. Typical Calgarian responses to why they live in Calgary: Prefer 6 months of snow/cold over rain….omg! Gotta love hail storms. Higher wages….but not in every industry and Alberta has a relatively high unemployment rate. Btw the only tourist destination for Calgary is Banff?…..Is Banff in Calgary? There is absolutely no tourist attraction(s) in Calgary. You will have to pay me to live in Calgary.

Yeah, back in 2009, i went to vancouver once bec it's popular, but i happen to stumble at Hasting st. I thought i will die alive when i pass by this area. I don't know how to describe what i saw. I thought it was just in the movies. It's as if i was in the land of the "LIVING DEAD".. honestly, i still had nightmares untill now.

I am shocked that tech jobs in Canada even in Vancouver offer salary a lot lower than USA. about 50% to even 100%. This is a huge barrier for high skill tech guys to move there.

I can't figure out why you've rated the education so good in Vancouver? The teacher unions are really strong, so good luck having any say in your childrens education. No computers or tech equipment in grade schools. Students from Calgary who go to Vancouver for higher education end up with much more debt than if they stayed in Calgary. Plus all their student friends in Vancouver can't afford to live there, so goodbye friends.

7 months of your life every year is wasted due to terrible harsh winter in Calgary. This year the temperature reached -30 degree Celsius. No physical activity of any kind. Had to wear 4 layers of clothes, and life has never been so boring. It's more like you've imprisoned yourself all the time.

It's not just this year, its almost everywhere we will hit -30 lol and it's not quite true about no physical activity in the winter. Believe it or not you will see people fat biking and even running in -20 weather! Snowboarding is pretty popular here too so I think anything is still possible as long as you bundle up properly for it 😉

Lol, yes 7 months of -30! It’s crazy. Honestly though, not sure where these thoughts of the climate in Calgary come from. We average less than 4 nights a year at -30 or below. And for all the talk of -30, people forget to mention we actually get more days on average in Dec-Feb above 10c (9 days), and in general have more days above freezing (daytime highs) than below. I worked for two years travelling to Vancouver during the week, and +5 and that continuous misty rain soaks into the bones. Sure, I admit I liked the greenery, and some “winter” flowers out, but the rain and no sun is downright depressing. -30 is bad (-20 is bad!) but you can guarantee it doesn’t last “7 months”. Not sure why this video even popped up on my feed, but great video anyway! :-)

Sure, Vancouver is beautiful and I love the beaches but I can't stand Bonnie Hitler, the NDP thieves and the outrageous housing prices. Calgary it is!

hahaha we are expecting almost 90,000 people to Calgary within the next 4 years ... so the opposite is happening! lol

Vancover is very expensive city. Everything cost more in BC. BRING CASH is what BC means. Gas and auto insurance and taxes are all more in Vancouver. Rent is also ridiculous high rents if you can find an empty suite even . Canada is at a turning point right now. We are allow over 1. So.ethjng million more Immigrints here in next 3 years. Yes more people is all we need right ? We have so much extra to go around why not open borders , come on come all , flee to the promise land. It's getting ugly. Open your eyes people and think for yourself. I know what I see. What do you see ?

Eddie, great to hear from you again. It's true that the all cash unconditional offers are the ones mostly winning the bids for Vancouver real estate. Very valid points, however, we see that with more immigration means more skilled workers and further investment into our country which will bring some much needed economic boost to our country. We'd love to hear more about your opinion, what else do you see?

Vancouver and surrey it is clear to see is mostly east Indians now. What's Calgary for ethnic people's ? Asians and east Indians ? Canada is becoming an extension of India. Big India soon.

I've seen some Asians, mainly Philippinos, Indians, Pakistanis and Chinese. I've seen lots of white people from Eastern Europe, Great Britain and France. Some came generations ago though, some are just arriving. My doctor is Nigerian, my neighbors are Hungarian. So you're welcome to Calgary.

@@deifor Calgary is great. Cheaper fuel cheaper to buy homes cheaper everything I'm sure. We are leave vancover next spring it's time to flee , we have paid enough and refuse.these ridiculous rents here . Wealthy people think all is fine here, but only the poor working slaves like us notice how everything is too expensive in Vancouver now

When you choose Calgary over Vancouver in climate you lost all credibility. Keep telling yourself that snow storms in October and May are ok and -30 isn't that cold because its dry. lol

i spent a day in white rock during the winter when it was around zero and never felt so cold in my life, a lot worse than -30 in calgary.

I'm sorry, I cant take this video seriously with you saying there are better opportunities for jobs in Calgary, as well as better weather... what? Like you said, its subjective, but there obviously clear bias in this video. -10 to -30 degree 7 month winters, Vancouver rarely drops below 0 and spring starts sooner, fall starts later. There is no comparison. As for job opportunities, why don't you look at unemployment rates opposed to just salaries, there is a plethora of opportunities in Vancouver and basically none in a dying sector (oil). The tech industry here is booming, which also wasn't mentioned. Good paying jobs exist in Calgary but are extremely difficult to come by, especially for new graduates, it's an awful place to start a career in a meaningful industry outside of oil & gas (look at the office vacancy downtown).

Nice to hear the negatives and positives both !! learning a lot from these guys videos and there were a lot of good points. I also see your feedback - since you also spoke about #Vancouver and I was trying to check before I immigrate from my country trying to figure out the masters study program very soon and for future job , making a new family , and buying real estate - a house .. and restarting a new life and trying to get answers .. i was wondering what is it that even at this age 40+ where would we find everything and best to live in ? What is driving the market there even though it is so costly and what was it that you found was not available.. let's say in #Cal ? Where would be really great for making a lot of friends, being in all sorts of areas and industries and trying out new things and meeting someone and earning a lot of money ? Hope you could answer the BELOW 👇 for me please as well ! *Also what UNIV should I target in BC and why BC and Vancouver and VICTORIA may be ? and same in CALGARY TOO ? Like there are 2 big universities there too! and How much of the difference do they make ? I was looking for something like the MBA or any programs that are just going to do fantastic for oneself in the near future !* Perhaps I would like to know from you .. Someone trying to chose a university study program like an Masters MBA and then find a future which city (Location ?) and where and what universities if you know any would you recommend ? Does it make it different when choosing for education and immigration compared to buying real estate and settling down ? Would you say that and could you answer these questions ❓ Thank you in advance !

@Ravi Nair Hi Ravi, ultimately just keep in mind that this guy is a relator is calgary. He is trying to sell houses to potential viewers and attract people to the City. Clear bias. I was born and raised in Calgary, I love the City. I now live in Vancouver. I moved to Vancouver for opportunity, and am very happy I did. It is very easy to find quality jobs here If that is what you're looking for. There is a labour shortage in basically every industry, Including construction and tech which are high paying. For my job, it pays much more in vancouver than it would in calgary. On the flip side, you'll never be able to buy a house in vancouver, unless you're already a multi millionaire. Calgary is much more affordable and in my opinion a better place to raise a family, If you can find a good job. In terms of schooling - look into program quality at different schools for MBA. UBC will likely be better than U of C. U of Vic is also a decent option. Calgary is okay in the summer if there isn't smoke, but unfortunately the past few years have been cold winters with smoky summers due to forest fires. It's quite unfortunate. This isn't much of an issue in vancouver and the costal air blows east and keeps smoke out of the city (usually).

Friends will be easy to come by in either cities. There is big populations of immigrants in both cities. Quality of life will be much better in Vancouver, cost of living is much better in Calgary. It depends what's more important to you.
