5 Things You Need To Know Before Moving to Calgary | Moving to Alberta

Are you considering a move to Calgary, Alberta, but feeling overwhelmed by the thought of it?
Moving to a new city can be an exciting adventure, but it's important to do your research before you make the big move.
If you're considering relocating to Calgary, Alberta, there are a few things you should know.
Here are 5 things you NEED to know before moving to Calgary:
1. Explore Calgary's Neighborhoods
Calgary is divided into four quadrants and 14 wards, each with its own unique neighbourhoods or communities. Some of the most popular residential neighbourhoods include Arbour Lake, Varsity, Brentwood, Hillhurst, Bridgeland-Riverside, Beltline, Kelvin Grove, Elbow Park, Acadia, Bowness, and Lake Bonavista.
It's important to note that some areas of Calgary are at risk of flooding during heavy rain, so be sure to check the flood hazard map provided by the Government of Alberta before choosing a neighbourhood.
2. Get Familiar with Transportation Options
Calgary's public transit network includes buses and two LRT lines called the CTrain. Tickets and passes can be purchased with cash or credit card at stations, on the bus, or at stores across the city.
Calgary also boasts exceptional outdoor pathway systems, with a network of 290 kilometres of street-side bikeways and an extensive paved multi-use pathway. If you prefer to drive, be aware that Calgary commutes are relatively short compared to other major Canadian cities.
3. Check Out the Job Market
Calgary has a thriving job market, with key sectors including aerospace and logistics, agribusiness, creative industries, energy, financial services, interactive digital media, life sciences, and technology. Calgary has the highest personal income per capita and labour productivity of major cities across Canada, and average hourly pay rates are generally higher than in other Canadian cities. The unemployment rate in Calgary was 6.6% as of February 2023, on par with the long-run average.
4. Experience Calgary's Top Attractions
Calgary offers plenty of fun things to do, including visiting the Calgary Zoo, WinSport, and the famous Calgary Stampede, a 10-day rodeo held in July. You can also take a day trip to Banff National Park and the town of Banff for some breathtaking views.
5. Embrace the Calgary Lifestyle
Calgary is a city that embraces outdoor living, with plenty of opportunities for hiking, biking, skiing, and other outdoor activities. There are also plenty of cultural attractions to explore, including the Glenbow Museum and the National Music Centre. And of course, Calgary is home to some of the best food and drink in Canada, with a thriving culinary scene and plenty of craft breweries and distilleries to sample.

Hey man, welcome to Calgary (if you're new around). A few neighbourhoods we'd recommend are Beltline, Kensington, Mission, Bridgeland and Inglewood. We're coming up with videos on these neighbourhoods too but it'd be a good idea to research these and visit them in person to find the best fit. Good luck with your apartment search!

@@LiveInnerCity are the house prices cheaper outside the city? I’m not used to suburban living. Also, looking from the UK I can’t find a site like ‘Rightmove’ for houses in Calgary … Is there such a nationwide site in Canada? Thanks for the reply!

Hey there! Totally get where you're coming from! Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to finding the perfect place to live. While Calgary may not have that old-world charm and centuries of history, it's got its own unique vibe that's worth exploring. Calgary may not be steeped in ancient traditions, but it's a city that's constantly evolving and embracing its modern, hip culture. From the thriving arts scene to the buzzing festivals and events, there's always something cool happening here. And let's not forget about the jaw-dropping natural beauty! With the majestic Rocky Mountains as your playground, adventure and stunning vistas are just a stone's throw away. Sure, it may not have those cobblestone streets, but Calgary is building its own legacy as a hotspot for innovation, entrepreneurship, and opportunity. It's where big dreams and bold ideas come to life. The energy and possibilities here are electric! But hey, if Calgary doesn't light that fire in your soul, that's totally cool too. The world is full of amazing places, each with its own unique charm. So go out there, explore, and find the spot that speaks to you, my friend. Your perfect match is out there, waiting to be discovered. If you have any more questions or want to know more about the cool side of Calgary, just drop me a line. I'm here to help you navigate your way to an awesome place you can call home!

Where would you recommend living if you did prefer older more historic areas? Is it possible to live outside Calgary (such as small farm) and commute into the city for work?

  • @LiveInnerCity

    @LiveInnerCity

    Жыл бұрын

@@AnthonyWilliams-vh1ds If you prefer older and historic areas, I recommend exploring neighborhoods within Calgary itself, such as Inglewood, Mission, and Ramsay. These areas have a rich history and maintain their charm with heritage buildings and vibrant communities. As for living outside Calgary on a small farm and commuting to the city for work, it is possible. Calgary offers commuting options that can accommodate this lifestyle. However, it's important to consider factors like distance, commute time, and transportation options when choosing a location. Let us know if you need any help!! :)
