IS CALGARY CANADA'S MOST LIVABLE BIG CITY? | "Low" Rent, Gas Prices + High Quality Of Life

Calgary might just be one of the best places to live in Canada if you are looking for a big city feel while on a budget. Rents are on the lower spectrum of all the largest cities in the country and it has a very high quality of life. Calgary is home to many world class festivals like the Calgary Stampede, has Banff National Park right on its doorstep and has become rich with amazing local businesses in the last decade. Join me and my Mom for a tour of the downtown core, as we chat about the pro's and con's of living in the city. Hope you enjoy the video! xx

SafetyWing (best for younger travelers + digital nomads): safetywing.com?referenceID=alinamcleod&Ambassador
I use both of these companies depending on the destination and requirements of entry. If you are going to be abroad for a long time and/or don't need as much coverage, I would recommend SafetyWing. BUT you cannot purchase SafetyWing WHILE in Canada or USA. You can only purchase once already abroad. Hey Mondo is more expensive but offers a higher level of coverage including plans that have trip cancellation/interruption insurance. Hey Mondo would be the better insurance to use if you need travel medical insurance when applying for a visa. Both companies cover covid. I had the opportunity to live in Ottawa (for 5 years) and ( 3 years) Mississauga, Ontario, and (3 years) Victoria, BC, and moved to Calgary way back in the summer of 2012 since then we stayed here due to taxes. No provincial tax, the salary is way better and the gas is cheaper. House prices are also definitely way more cheaper than in the cities we used to live in. :)

I was never a guy who would explore nature but since I moved here, every weekend we like to go out to the mountains and explore different cities, hikes, waterfalls etc. There is just so much to do if you love nature or like to live close to nature.

Also depends on how bad the first winter is, if it's mild they get a false impression. The people who usually stick around are from other prairie provinces.

Great channel. Been watching your travel videos for a while. I’ve traveled the world myself. They are awesome. I have been living in Calgary for 3 years after living in Vancouver for 15 (London before that). I can tell you it has all the city things you crave (especially living central with great restaurants, festivals, brew pubs and night life) but the cost of living is so much cheaper. The sunny weather is great, and there is so much access to green space. People are mostly warm and friendly. It’s got a big hub airport for travel. Lots of job opportunities, especially emerging in tech, with offices in gorgeous buildings. The winters can be long however. It’s not London or New York, but it’s got a nice balance of city life without all the big city problems. As for Vancouver, It’s objectively gorgeous, but the cost of living even on a good salary is outrageous. You go months with rain and gray skies. Don’t really miss Vancouver at all. I have a nice apartment here that is triple the size, half the price, and better quality. It’s good here. Again, great channel.

What put Edmonton on the map was when the British rock band, Procol Harum recorded a live album with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, in 1971. This band was famous for the songs, A Whiter Shade Of Pale, and Conquistador. Calgary got put on the map due to different things, like Festival Express, in 1970, also known as Woodstock on wheels, and the Calgary Stampede. Famous musicians and bands come from Calgary, like Floyd Sneed, the original drummer from 3 Dog Night, (famous for Joy To The World), Tommy Banks, The Stampeders, Jann Arden, Paul Brandt, Feist, Lindsey Ell, and others. Cheers!

I lived in Calgary for over ten years and loved the city. The University of Calgary is one of the best institutions one will find anywhere, serving 40,000 students. If you live in the downtown area, they have Plus-15, which are enclosed glass walkways 15 feet above ground connecting many of the downtown buildings. These are great when the temperature is cold. The University of Calgary has a similar set up, but they are underground tunnels connecting many buildings, including all student residences. People are friendly and the city has always had a friendly young vibe about it. Finally, Calgary offers many multiethnic food choices that one would find in Vancouver or Toronto. Thank you for taking us on your journey around Calgary.

I visit Calgary four to six times a year. I like it as much as like any city, I prefer to live outside of any city, but within an hour of downtown. That way you can relatively easily access the benefits of a big city, but I don't have to live in a city. It's close proximity to the Rockies make it a winning location. Nice video tour.

I was born in Winnipeg, but I've lived in Ontario (Toronto, Waterloo, Cambridge), Nova Scotia (Halifax), and spent time in other Canadian cities like Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver, Edmonton, etc. Thank you for doing an honest profile on Calgary, it's too bad you didn't venture into the suburbs. One of the major positives I see in Calgary (likely due to the wealth provided by our natural resources) is the recreation facilities and schools built all over the city. I've lived in other Canadian cities where you see a substantial difference in the quality of services across the various sections of the city. In Calgary, the city has done an exceptional job building facilities in the rich, middle class, and working class neighborhoods. Downtown was an area that had the least amount of these services available, particularly with the closure of the downtown YMCA. I love Calgary, and I think it's wonderful it's getting recognized in Canada and Internationally as an amazing city to live, work, study, and play.

Great video, Calgary has changed so much since I was living there 1980-84. Was really kind of bland then, only remember Heritage Park as being somewhere I enjoyed going. Looks so much more alive now. Did your Mum move to an apartment?, I remember when you were quarantining a year ago she was in a townhouse. lol, sorry, probably seems nosey.

I lived in Calgary for a long time and see with my own eyes how this city has grown since the 80's. It's a beautiful city like many others but Calgary is where I chose as compared to Vancouver or Toronto; too crowded. If I want to go to the mountains it is only 45 minutes away to the west and if I want to see the Prairie then turn east.

The reason Calgary is so sunny is because the Rockies block moisture coming in from the west to some extent and in the winter it is very cold, so the RH drops to zero and there is no cloud (and then the snow builds up in the mountains which can lead to floods when it melts). It's extremely dry during the winter and bear in mind "winter" is the default setting, imx it lasts from around the week after Thanksgiving (Canadian) to the week after Victoria Day (depending on how you define winter, but I've seen it snow plenty of times in October and May and you need to wear a jacket). Downtown basically died back around 2014 when the oil price cratered and a lot of the oil majors and subsidiary companies either moved out or merged, so as a result, rental rates plummeted and that's part of the reason why downtown Calgary is a cheaper place to live than other major cities in Canada. Downtown Calgary is walkable, but because of the +5 system, walking outside for most of the year is unpleasant. But most people don't live downtown and I'm not really sure why anyone would unless your job is downtown (which is less and less common). There isn't much in the way of supermarkets for example. That's why you need a car, the further you get from downtown the crappier public transport is.

The number of separated cycle tracks is growing yearly, & we have a thousand kilometers of multi-use pathway that can connect you to anywhere you need to be. Please don't use scooters...😉

When I saw your comment I was thinking of you for a minute, then when I looked at who it was and it was you! 😂 I guess in Calgary we really get to know the people that like to live the lifestyle we live. I guess I am not the only one who rides my bicycle in rain, shine, or snow. The bus’s and C-Train are also awesome because most buses are equipped with bicycle racks and you can bring your bicycle on the train too. Also if it gets really cold or you just want to get wherever you are going you can jump into a taxi and they have bicycle racks too but overall I usually stick to riding my bicycle. 🚲
