Caleb Williams' key weakness, Michael Penix, J.J. McCarthy, Marvin Harrison Jr. | NFL | THE HERD

Спорт

The Athletic's Dane Brugler (author of 'The Beast') joins Colin Cowherd to break down Caleb Williams' game and where he needs to improve in the NFL. Brugler then explains why he is encouraged by J.J. McCarthy's intangibles despite not showing off too much of his game in Michigan's offense. Watch as Brugler also shares his concerns for Michael Penix and why he is not a first-round QB. He then breaks down what makes Marvin Harrison Jr. the top WR of the 2024 NFL Draft.

The problem with Penix was he wasn't use to that type of pressure. Playing in the Pac 10 he didn't have to throw hot routes and check downs very often. Just like alot of college qbs the get a little comfy against teams with speed but not power. To me his biggest hiccup is health.

The funny thing is to say jj mcarthy is head and heels above pennix is bewildering . If pennix was given the same defense as jj the game with michighan would have been a very different game . Washington was in the championship game because of pennix . Michigan probably could have plugged in play a 100 quarterbacks and still was succesful . For the vikings to trade down for jj makes no sense if pennix is still available at your normal first round position . Big ten guy watches big ten football . Not pac 12 . Must remember pennix outduled caleb . Caleb was a worn out mess while michael was cool calm and colected

In Michael penix’s “struggle” game he genuinely outplayed JJ Mcarthy by every conceivable metric. I’m not saying Mike will be a great pro, it’s just insane that with McCarthy there’s an assumption of upside based on zero evidence. With Penix the numerous things that translate to pro ball he does better than anyone else in the draft class don’t count. But one of the only “bad” games of his 2 year run is enough evidence to knock him down. It’s just group think at this point.

Caleb has BUST written all over him. - 5 consecutive USC QB Busts after Carson Palmer. - Played in pass-happy No-defense Pac-12. - Undersized at 6’1”, which matters a lot more in NFL than college - Basic, simplistic, QB-friendly Lincoln Riley spread offense that inflates QB production and doesn’t translate to NFL - Known for his out-of-structure, backyard football plays. Playing in-structure is not good, which doesn’t bode well for the NFL. - Squeaky clean pockets from the shotgun with a deep secure firm pocket up the middle, tons of room to step up. His NFL pockets will be nothing like his USC pockets. - The Chicago Bears franchise has NEVER produced a Franchise QB, ever. This has all the makings of an epic, all-time Bust.

I bet you can't name 1 hand, let alone 2 hands worth of college coach's with a better track record of preparing QBs for the NFL than Lincoln Riley. Saban? Mac Jones, Greg McElroy, were busts. Harbaugh? Luck was the only good QB. Dabo? Trevor Lawrence was the only good 1. All others did not pan out.

He played against four top 25 defenses last year. Oregon, Utah, UCLA, and Notre Dame. Besides that I don't know how you could have watched any USC game last year and come to the conclusion that he always had a clean pocket. Outside of Caleb they were at a massive deficit in talent therefor if he wanted to win the game he had to put on the cape. Just look at the Washington game from last year, everyone makes fun of him for crying but he legitimately put it all out on the line for a chance to make it back to the Pac-12 Championship and get into the playoffs. It just wasn't good enough. Also, just because a team hasn't had success it doesn't mean they will never be good. All it takes is one good QB and a little bit of stability.

Jayden Daniels and Micheal Penix have the highest ceilings and will have an immediate effect on their new teams. Their ability to attack downfield with accuracy changes everything for their offense and for the oppositions defense. Those guys are both going to set the league on fire right away. Will they have longevity? IDK. Penix has an injury history and Daniels plays every game like it's his last. I'd roll the dice on either guy though if I was a GM.
