Calculating Discounts, Tax, Tips, Double Discount, and Original Price | Grammar Hero ASVAB Tutoring

In this video, I show you how to calculate discounts, tax, tips, and double discounts. In addition, I also work out problems in which you must determine the original price of an item, given the sales price of that item as well as a discount rate.
Since you are not permitted to use a calculator on the ASVAB, you must be comfortable working with decimals as well as performing long division by hand to perform the calculations on the test well as in the video. If those are topics with which you struggle, you may want to watch the following videos first:

I’ve been loving your videos they have been helping me brush up on skills I lost and stuff I didn’t fully remember how to do. I’m studying for the ASVAB and I hit a discount issue that I am a little puzzled on where to start. It goes “An appliance store reduced the price of a refrigerator by 20% then later raised the price by 10% from the lower price. What was the original price of the refrigerator, if the final price is 70.40.”

To find the Original Price (33:00), could I subtract the Discount Rate from 100%? If it says the Discount is 20%, could I also subtract 20% from 100%? That would give me 80%, which in decimal form converts to .8. Would that method work each time and would also save me a step? I was thinking I could do 100% - DR, then SP/NDR=OP. (NDR is New Discount Rate.)

Original price can be easier determined: If Peter bought that after 20% discount it means he bought watch for 80% of original price(100%-20%=80%). So we can determine mean of 1% original price(84:80, if its hard for you, check Grammar hero guides about dividing). We got 1,05=1%, so 20%=21, Add this value(21) to price after discount and you will get original price Here solve in math language: 100%-20%=80% - selling price of original 84:80=1,05 - 1% of original price 20 • 1,05=21 - 20% of original price 84+21=105 - $ original

Where is this question from, if you don't mind me asking? Here is the solution: www.algebra.com/algebra/homework/word/finance/Money_Word_Problems.faq.question.1173189.html I don't think rebate questions will show up on the ASVAB, since rebates are not necessarily common knowledge. Sales tax and discounts are common knowledge; rebates are not.

@@Lokirlehrawhaw you are taking .2 away from 1 ( 1-.2) and you'll get .8. Check your work by adding .8 and .2 ( .8+.2 ) and you will get 1. I used to have problems with fractions and decimals so I would use pizza to help me out. Ex: I have one whole pizza and its cut into 10 slices. Each slice can be thought of as 1/10th of the pizza. If you eat 2 slices, how many are left? 8 are left. You can stop there but to explain it a little more, you have 8/10ths left. If you convert that fraction to 80/100 (cause 100 kind of represents 1) you then know the percentage which is 80%. To make it a decimal you move the dot two places to the left and you get .8. But I think you get it. I hope this helped but if not, I'm sorry if I confused you more.

So the formula for the original price is: Sales Price = Original Amount - Original Amount (Discounted) For question 2 you are given the $450 for the Sales Price. 450 = Original Amount - Original Amount (Discount Rate) Next you were given the discount which in this case was 10%. 450 = Original Amount - Original Amount (.10 [convert percent to decimal by moving it two places to the left]) Now we will substitute "Original Amount" with a variable to account for the unknown. 450 = X - X (.10) Next you clean it up. 450 = X - .1X. In front of a variable is always a "1" so it will become. 450 = 1x - .1x. You subtract like terms and get .9. 450 = .9x Then you divided both sides by .9 450/.9 = .9/.9x 500 = x
