yep , I had to remember all along that this was a calart admission portfolio , probably at least a year of work , prework on other paper sheets before copying into the book , pre conception of the all book with intent to show that you can do different styles, animal studies , perspective , detailed and minimalist , that you're open minded and curious ... and not just everyday sketching. Or else I would just divorce my hands and fingers and go back to bed forever. Shit. It was amazing ;)

Honestly, just keep practising, just keep drawing. I was told when I was younger that I wasn't good enough to get anywhere, and so I stopped, and I'm so sad that I did, because it really is amazing how much your art improves over the years. I have several friends that draw every single day, even if just a little doodle, and it's amazing to compare their artwork from month to month and see how much they improve. Just believe in yourself, and keep drawing, and don't let anyone tell you that you aren't good enough.

I love the art. The only reason this depresses me is that I wish I had the kind of guidance that would have gotten me to this level in the same time frame. It wasn't until only the last few years of me being 25-30 where I got access on youtube and pinterest to the kind of art tutorials that actually made sense and ran through things. I only started in art in high school, and never could stick with it because the art teacher there actively sucked and not only did little to guide, but literally wouldn't let me take an art class cuz by the time I could fit it in a schedule, it would either be "unfair for other kids to not take art 1 and skip to art 2" but that "I couldn't take art 1 because it would be a blowoff class." And then community college had shit classes that focused on experimental art instead of any kind of basics despite being supposed 101 classes, and Depaul after that had okay figure drawing classes but the way courses worked, doing an animation degree, there was ironically little in the way of traditional art courses, and more specialized courses for animation that lumped in film, animation history, and such (which weren't bad per say), but with a weird lack of actual art classes. I was ready to give up cuz no matter what I tried, it always felt like my art was shit and things never turned out right, and that I could never learn it (not to mention the conflicts with other things like language learning, which had a similar issue). It wasn't until I saw some videos on the HOW to LEARN did it finally start to take, and it's just depressing. I wish youtube and stuff was around sooner. So much free learning that was ten times better than the money wasted on high school and college.

Im 31 - and am also very behind some of the top 19-21 year old students. The main thing to remember is the end goal is to express yourself and grow. I started off quite well after university I even got a job in games, but i stagnated hard - and lost the love for it - but im wanting to improve now just so i make stuff i want to see and put it out there. Now with the internet you can cultivate whole worlds that people can see and enjoy regardless of your day job. Let's keep going so we don't regret it in our 40's.

This is the best Calarts sketchbook I've seen, I'm a freshman in Highschool preparing to hopefully get in to Calarts. I have a question about the process. 1. When did you start working on this sketchbook? 2. How many pieces are in your portfolio? 3. Have you submitted the application yet? 4. And when will you find out if you got in? I really hope you see these! Anyways AMAZING WORK I hope you get in.

Thanks! Since you're still a freshman, you still have a bunch of time :) Most people start their sketchbook in the year they're applying, or months before. I started my portfolio Jan 2017, started my sketchbook around Aug, and turned it all in mid-December. I think there's around 25 pieces in my portfolio. The time you find out their decision varies, depending on when you submitted. If you submitted on the regular deadline, you'll usually find out March to early April. Best of luck with your application!

It may have been started then, but a sketchbook to this quality is only the cream of the ‘be clearly put in easily a few thousand hours into studying alone because they’re adept at human anatomy, animal illustration, storytelling and environment. By no means should any young artist compare their work to this, because this is a few years worth of daily and focused studying all the right things, I would assume. It’s entirely possible for anyone else to do this, but you just need to be aware of the amount of effort and dedication it requires for this.

What saddens me.. Is when I see this sketchbook. It's quite clear that it has a spontaneity to it. Different tools, pasting, of things ect ect. This is something myself and alot of other people cannot really achive.. for my a word pops up.. "why?" Why bother? I am overwelmed by a rigid feelings.. its quite sad. I sometimes wonder if it was brought about from addictions, to games and porn for exsample.. its kills that inner desire to just "do" something. Any everything i do draw or paint is neat and tidy. I can do "random" both in context and tools, its like i am consumed by anxiety to do such things. I think young generations are going to have this problem more and more.

This sounds weird, but I think you and I shared some of the same feelings when looking at this person's sketchbook. When I was watching this video (perhaps it was the music as well), i got a sense of deep warmth and despondency. Warmth from the personality of a stranger's art, and despondency that I'll never create anything close to this or attempt it either. Though if it helps, maybe start with the passion you have for games and porn even. Bodies are sexy, beautiful, and porn takes away from the natural curve of them. Create art that embraces the former. Idk :>

I'm feeling the same. And I think the internet is to blame. We've become over saturated with algerythms jamming all these artists down our throats it's having negative reactions. It's making us competitive globally and we feel awful about ourselves. It makes it hard to just enjoy sketching. We've been now shown an expectation. I think the best thing is to just get rid of social media

Quite late, but try to buy sketchbooks that have an equal or more of 120gsm. Gsm (or g/m²) is the thickness of the paper. Another trick is to put some trash paper/cardboard behind the page you're working on, so you'll not stain the next page. Just be aware that higher the thickness the less is the transparency.
