I wonder if these technicians ever considered playing some soothing classical violin music for their patients. This music has the tendency to stir up a person's emotions, and I can only imagine the blessing it'd be for someone who's lived without the ability to hear.

I wish I did, however the progress has not been anything near what I had hoped it to be. Having the implants is great, but the next step is for her to learn how to hear, and then learn how to speak. She's become very discouraged and quite frankly hasn't done a whole lot with it because of that. Hopefully that changes in the near future

That's a part of the learning process. I'm trying to teach myself calculus right now so I can better understand quantum physics (because I love physics) and the only thing that's stopping me is the fact that I hate having to sit down and learn something even though I really like it both math and science. She just has to find a way to make it fun, learning should be done in a fun way that's how things stick into our brains. Maybe you could tell her that she's officially a cyborg now, maybe that'll make her enthusiastic. There's always another technique for learning things and that is to just allow yourself to be immersed in the experience. Failure means nothing and by simply immersing yourself into the environment you will pick things up. Our brains naturally pick out patterns so she essentially doesn't have to try hard to learn. For the most part she just has to be present and she'll absorb the language. Making an effort only speeds up the process.

AnteConfig.you are the perfect example of what is wrong with people. So caught up in your own world and issues that the humanity of this story has gone way over your head. We have a young lady who has gone thru the processes that this procedure requires, to possibly discover that the gravity of the change is more than what she may be able to cope with... then a father whos disappointment is no doubt causing an internal rift as to weather or not this was the right choice to make only to be then told by some random ... “ I’m too slack to learn some shit sometimes so that’s clearly what’s wrong with your daughter, just tell her it ain’t that hard.. or better yet tell her she’s a cyborg now” What sort of idiot are you?Is your name Sheldon Cooper? If you had any decency you would remove this comment out of respect for the family.Gregory Theriault our hearts and thoughts are with you and yours. I sincearly hope that Caitie finds a way to over come and find joy in sound and music.✌🏽

If your the father than maybe her discouragement is being fed by this internal rift you speak of. I'm not taking my comment down because what I wrote wasn't hurtful. I wrote it in a light-hearted manner in an attempt to suggest that a little set back is nothing to worry about. I don't think there's something wrong with her, I'm confident that she could do it. I don't understand why you think me taking this comment down would make things better. I'm no Sheldon and I'm definitely not what's wrong with people. All I'm saying is that maybe she's trying too hard. Maybe she's putting herself off by setting the goal too high. Maybe she's grading herself and she doesn't like the score she's getting. People have been known to be discouraged by these things. If these things aren't the problem then maybe her problems are personal. I didn't get into this, I didn't want to get into it and I won't get into that.

Family members might want to try cutting back on the sign language so as to force her to learn more quickly.

she could just barely hear. the sounds of conversation were still foreign to her. the technician was too quick to explain. You should introduce various sounds slowly. in other places, the correct method is introduced to people who can only hear like this.

If they can read lips it should be easy to know if they are hearing sound... And if they can read lips they would understand what's being said in any case.... People should be behind a wall or wear a mask ... It always seems like they know that someone is speaking and what they say giving the false impression that the implants work.... They might work BUT this also over represents it

Yeah I thought the same, some privacy and close support would be nice, however we are enjoying watching them, which would not have been possible otherwise, so can't complain. I totally understand if they're private though, I don't mind, and I'm sure most are.
