CADPAT Effectiveness
Ойын-сауық
In this video we look at the effectiveness of CADPAT in a heavily vegetated woodland environment. CADPAT is the current issue camouflage pattern for the Canadian armed forces. Unfortunately due to laws that ban the sale of officially issued CADPAT uniforms in Canada, actual CADPAT is hard to come by. Decently made copies of the pattern like the ones featured in this video can be purchased at RAP4.com.

Couldn't agree more!! As a Canadian:)
I was in when we first received this pattern. It is awesome in lush green foliage and in boreal forest. The issued gear doesn't create as much of a dark image in shadows as this civy version you are wearing. We still had some old green webbing gear and alice packs etc. (Pretty much what you have on here) This gave a bit more breakup and we also found that once we added some local foliage, even in small amounts, it really fooled the eye even up close. No good in dead grass and many winter situations except evergreen forests. Great video.
Great pattern and colour sceme. I have this myself, and have tested it and seen it work great in Alpine areas. I know that thisis less effective in warmer drier climates. But still a great pattern.
Where I live, the vegetation is heavily mixed between deciduous and coniferous trees, and that is where CADPAT really shines.
Pretty crazy that this was the first fully digital camo pattern and they nailed it this well
What an incredible amount of work you did by setting up each shot. Thank you very much for this upload. The cadpat is great but your efforts are awesome
The right green for that kind of veg. They got it right.

I personally love CadPat, it's by far my favourite pattern because of it's effectiveness. Greeting from ireland.
Great video, Brent! -This is a great pattern for really lush terrain like what is found in Canada. People keep sounding off about shadows and lighting. What people don't realize is that shadows that are cast onto a pattern that is in the environment, becomes that environment. If the pattern does not blend in that case, it is the wrong pattern. The best ideal conditions for testing camo patterns is during an overcast day where the sun does not white wash the video and the pattern is aloud to be neutral in reflection/shadowing as the foliage. When light (such as sunlight) is introduced and shadows appear, thus the camo pattern remains the same color and accepts the shading the same as the foliage. And that is how camo is intended to work. I love your videos, man, and they are most informative. I hate it when people try to put the blame of sunlight and shadows on you and make it your fault. It is not your fault that you do not have cinema grade lighting crews or cameras out in the field with you. Your videos rock and we appreciate your giving us the chance to field test camo patterns with out having to spend the money and time. I like this pattern, A-TACS FG and some of the German WWII patterns. Ever hear of the Pencott pattern by Hyde Definition? Looks like great stuff. Outstanding videos, Brent!

Couldn't agree more brother, thanks for your post.
Even if this is a copy, it looks pretty damn effective to me. I think the brighter greens help it function in places with lots of ground foliage and also lots of hardwood trees. Seems to suit your environment pretty well Brent. Thanks again for the video brother.
The patterns with some of the lighter greens on are really impressive, great stuff!!
cadpat was designed for Canadian wilderness, which aside from Southern ontario doesn't look like the video, most of the Canadian wilderness that isn't either tundra or prairie is covered by very dense green vegetation and pine/spruce trees, pine/spruce trees are darker than other trees and that is what the colour scheme is based on. wear this pattern in Ontario, bc or Quebec and you are almost impossible to spot, even while moving. cf uniforms are also IR and somewhat thermal treated
Great series of uniform comparisons! You obviously put a lot of time, effort and money into it. The problem with the disruptive pattern uniform is not the uniform itself (although the proliferation of patches are getting out of hand!), its the mismatched vest, rifle (all nice and black and shiny), headwear, lack of proper skin camouflage, and whatever crap the soldier is wearing (field dressings, tourniquets, knives or bayonets with gaudy scabbards/sheathes, compasses, glowsticks, pens etc. etc.). Thank you again!
The first thing the army taught me was to minimize movement/Look for movement. When CadPat first came out, we were amazed at how it would allow you to blend in to the background. Items as large as a trailer would "disappear", when covered with the pattern. This is mostly dependent on light striking the surface, and much of the time in this video, he's a dark man shape.Ironically, the light paint on the rifle helps it stand out as the shape of something not natural. A good video showing the risks of moving inside the forest. About legal restrictions on Canadian uniform. It's because the Department of National Defence owns all CadPat, and treats it as protected technology. Therefore, any uniform parts are stolen government property. They will destroy it, and not release it to Crown Assets for sale as surplus. Other commenters are correct about IR defeating, etc. However, as Brent 0331 points out, there are enough good imitations and variants that it doesn't matter. Impersonation, not too much. No one would believe some fat wanker in camo pants is a soldier, and criminals really don't have much use for military clothing.
honestly love you channel best camouflage Effectiveness videos out there keep it up

That pattern was made for more of a pine type forest up in Canada and northern United States, it works quite well in a pine forest etc. down in Texas though it’s quite different, in Texas I like the Rhodesian Brushstroke. It is also very well in a jungle environment
The art of Camouflage and Concealment is a skill. Most camouflage patterns work well at a distance, once the soldier knows what he is doing. They aren't meant to be used as some invisibility cloak that allows people to walk right by you without noticing, there's ghillie suits for that or if not, stick lots of foliage in your uniform. Most modern engagements take place at intermediate range, thats where the most camo's are designed to work best. Even a pure OD green outfit can work well on someone who knows what they're doing. Most soldiers should know how to blend into their environment with their uniform regardless of pattern. All these new fancy pancy new camo development projects are expensive and funds could be better used. Just develop one that works good (and looks good because military is just as much about "show" as it is about combat) and stick with it Note: This rant isn't necessarily about the camo in this vid, but all different camo's in general

I agree with you, I always say: "Camouflage is for 20 % pattern and 80 % doing the right thing". The US Army has concluded that pattern is not important with distances over 50 meters/ 55 yards, as long as pattern has the same colors as its enviroment. During my Army days, my platoon had to find a soldier. It took a long time before we found him. He was just laying on the forest floor, no concealment of any bush.

I live in Scotland and Cadpat works extremely well here...probably because it's very similar to Canada with pine woods etc. however the newer Pencott Greenzone camo is probably the best all rounder I've seen yet. If you can get it there then it's well worth a look/test. All the best!

+Stormcrafter Hey brother, yeah, I've seen that pattern in some videos but it really hasn't it made its way over to the U.S. yet. For me to pick it up would be pretty expensive.
Another great video. My comment would be the same as Edwin Fageras stated below: your choice of always hiding in totally shaded areas does make you appear as a dark spot. For that pattern, given it's yellow green hues, you need to hide at the edge of light and shadow, partially in the light and partially concealed by the shadows of the tree canopy and vegetation.
wow! this really blends specially with sunlight
Not the worse pattern, but for the most part, I just looked in the shadows. Thanks for the series. They are great.

Great vids....after having served in the CAF ( Armoured Recce)..we got to see alot of lads from NATO Nations etc.....it was ALWAYS well talked about between us all about Camo effectiveness.....your Vids are top notch...a really good representation of the various patterns...as always some will be MORE effective in the Texas foliage, and Cadpat is one that didn;t do as well.....it's a tad dark for your type of foliage...here in Canada, while some is like that...we also have much darker green boreal forests that cast a lot of dark shadows as well..much like the German Flectarn...it IS very effective here.....and there is the Problem with ALL Camo Patterns....it works for the environment(s) of the Nation that designed it...but tends to drop more in other environments...( well all except UCP which I have NEVER understood). I spotted you most of the time early on, this missed you more often than not for the 2nd half. I lost count badly lol
Surprisingly effective even at close range if someone is not expecting you to be there. I've had people almost step on me during escape and evasion exercises. CADPAT fades very quickly, so new uniforms are made too dark in anticipation of this. Crisp new uniforms are less effective than ones that have spent some tie in the sun and through the wash.
CADPAT was the first digital camouflage pattern ever brought into Production

it seems a bit better when walking or stalking, it does merge with the surrounding environment 70 % of the time

Still my favorite pattern for springtime. The greens in spring are a lot brighter ad CADPAT matches those bright greens perfectly. Whereas most good patterns work best in the shadows and block up in the sun, CADPAT does the opposite. I'm interested in seeing the new TW variant. 9:47 Predator moment lol
Looks quite similar to the M05 we have here in Finland, but then again our climates and vegetation is pretty similar as well.
Maybe its in my blood as a Canadian, but I actually had a pretty easy time spotting this vs another video which was all black.. Our CADPAT was designed for mixed forests up north, great around here in ON. But in this video, it's too dark for the surrounding foliage and is a dead giveaway. Love CADPAT, but placement and movement is just as (if not more) important as the pattern itself.
Actually CAPPAT is a little lighter, but this is one of the best intimidators i have seen. Great Video.

Shape, shine, shadow, movement, colour, spacing, silhouette and texture.. 8 aids to observation shadow and silhouette gave him away for most of the tests.
Forests up here are a bit darker with the pine trees, but it still performs very well.
Oh yeah brother, just watched your flecktarn video and I think this is the camo for your region, seems extremely effective from the video footage.

the cadpat also acts a a way to camo against aircraft imaging as the pixels on the uniform help it blend in
That seems like it would be great for the woods I hunt near Syracuse NY. If I can get my hands on some I'll post a video of it.
Cadpat is the best camo for jungle warfare. It blends so good
Tested this in Pet. Took 6 of us out to an open area facing a forest told us 6 guys were hidden. Best I could pick were one maybe two. They had different pattern CADPAT
I would like to see/ suggest /request one shot where you are really well hidden without face paint to illustrate the importance of proper coverage but even without love you videos thank you sir
I must say as a Canadian..hunting in the spring with this one...you can't see me at all it's pretty insane how well it works with green leaf/grass
In a few years this stuff will become available to the public, I cant wait 😁
I find it's interesting how the darker colours- either shadows cast from cover or from the tilley hat give the position away more often than not.
@hailsland
6 жыл бұрын
Although then again I'm viewing each shot knowing there's a man hidden in it somewhere.
since it doesnt absorb light like the plants in some cases it tends to be just a shadow or dark figure making it somewhat visible. i guess its still best to hide in shadows during day even with camo
@leemon908
3 жыл бұрын
Look up the 5 S's of concealment then you'll realise why it works that way
genuine issued cadpat is darker and isn't sold since the IR suppressant ink they have on it makes the entire uniform controlled goods
So as I'm sure you all well know, different countries cammo patterns are usually based on their home environment. Much of our woodlands are evergreens or deciduous trees, and I think this pattern works exceptionally well in that environment. Even better than this new growth brush. The copies are fairly popular in some independent hunting stores, though they aren't as good in the fall, they still work well in deciduous forest. Oh, and the real ones have something built in to fool IR.
this is better then i thought it would be. If i didn't know there was someone in each shot i wouldn't make out a body to know its a person unlike some other camos iv seen
This pattern looks cool but it's not as effective as I thought it would be. All the woodland specific camouflage patterns turn into dark human shaped blobs in the wrong lighting. That's what makes your videos so good is you actually move around showing various lighting and how that effects the camouflages effectiveness.

sorry for the 3 years old necro but i had to respond to this XD the reason is that this is imitation of actual TW CADPAT, to the average person they look exactly the same but if you are used to seeing CADPAT you can tell the difference, the actual CADPAT is actually more effective and another cool fact about CADPAT is that its meant to be used in broad daylight while keeping minimum signature both in thermal and night visions hence the main reason why its illegal for civilians to acquire actual CADPAT; the government is very strict about who gets to have their hands on advanced military hardware last but not least, CADPAT is one of the most powerful features in the arsenal of the army whether the army wants to admit it or not and the TW pattern itself was developed using Canadian environment and so its main usage is for defensive war on Canadian soil where soldiers would literally be in their element and quite literally undetectable without very powerful thermal scanners with this in mind its easy to see why most people would be oblivious of this information or simply underestimate the CADPAT camo's capabilities, a common thing that happens even among Canadians the best way to truely see CADPAT TW's effectiveness is to find either a video or real life exercise of soldiers doing a temperate exercise in the forest
@Aaron-lc8nf

@@xGoodOldSmurfehx I'm confused, I understand the thermal rating but if you can't tell the difference to the average person, isn't the enemy going to experience the same thing?

4 жыл бұрын
@@Aaron-lc8nf thats not the point silly, this CADPAT imitation is less efficient at disrupting human shape, its actually fairly good as a camoflage by all means but still inferior and the reason for it is that some of the green is not as bright as the real CATPAD TW which is where the real CADPAT's ability to disrupt human shape lies

I don't know why the Canadians claim that they invented digital camouflage they didn't I don't me to sound arrogant but this is a fact the very first digital pattern was developed and introduced by the U.S. Army in 1978. It was called DTC "dual texture camouflage" or dual-tex for short it predates cadpat by 18 years, however for some reason it never went into mass clothing production. It was used on tanks helicopters and other military vehicles and even then it was in limited numbers, plus most of the vehicles painted in the pattern were stationed on U.S. military bases in Europe. It was really cool pattern you can find pictures of it on google image, great video Brent I really enjoyed it can't wait to see all the other patterns you have lined up.
@spirit.door.

we didn't invent digital camouflage, we invented CADPAT, a type of digital camouflage
This pattern seems to be more effective when in slight sunlight rather than in shadows. In the shade, it just looks like any other profile, which I guess isn't going to be mitigated by any other pattern, more likely some physical objects to break up the profile.
I *really* like this pattern, should work for SWVA just fine!
It's unfortunate that the U.S. military doesn't have a light green camouflage pattern such as CADPAT in it's arsenal(for woodland and grassy environments exclusively no doubt). The pixelated light green seems to literally fade into nature in both shadowed and highlighted areas. The Canadians have got a truly awesome and moreover effective pattern in their hands.
I remember once my 2nd Lt just disappeared into thin air while giving a briefing simply because he was wearing CADPAT and was standing in front of an evergreen tree.

Holy shit, canadian camo is so good
what would be best for winter camo? solid white? or a multicolour e.g urban camo type with whites and greys
They all work, it's movement that gives you away. If you watch all of the videos or have real world experience like I do you'll see it really doesn't matter what camo you wear. The patterns bleed into a green or black for the summer period camo and a brown or black for the brown period camo. Pick whatever camo pattern turns you on. The only one that doesn't work is the current U.S. Army moon camo known as UCP
Out of all those scenarios, I'd be DEAD.
You should try it in a dense pine forest, as the pattern is meant for that.
