Woodland Effectiveness PART II

Ойын-сауық

Check out PART I: • Woodland Camouflage Ef...
This is PART II of my Woodland Camouflage effectiveness video. This video will consist of numerous scenes where each will begin with a concealed stationary position (both with & without the use of vegetation), followed by a movement phase out of the initial position. The purpose of the video is to give the viewer a chance to see the individual camouflage pattern and how it looks and blends into this environment. There will be varying degrees of how much of the uniform will be exposed to the viewer, some scenes will only expose little more than perhaps a boonie hat, while other scenes will have virtually no vegetation covering.

Back in the late 80's I grew up on a lake in northern Idaho. Pretty much all that was available in camouflage pretty much was the 50's style blotch, or woodland. One night a buddy and I dressed up in woodland camouflage, painted up or faces and went exploring along the shores of the lake. It was in the summer and on a weekend, all the cabins and homes along the lake were packed full of people. We wanted to see what was going on, and watch the random acts of stupidity people do when intoxicated. My buddy thought it would be a good idea to raid a refrigerator that was outside on a deck of this cabin. The occupants were have a camp fire on the beach. As my buddy was helping himself to their inventory of alcoholic beverages as I pulled overwatch on his mission. One of the occupants walked over to replace is now empty bottle of beer. My buddy had gone into a bush and curled up in a fetal position. The occupant was baffled by how much booze was gone. After a brief shout out to the rest of his crew on the levels of their consumptions. He proceeded to urinate on the bush. This bush which held my buddy was about 6 feet from the cabin, and was only about five feet in diameter. I thought for sure he would of been spotted. After the occupant left, my buddy came back to our observation post, soaked in urine. It was hard keeping quite at his misfortune. I told him he stinks and we are swimming back to wash him off. Since that day, I still feel woodland is the best for mountainous terrain.

I’m old enough to have been issued M81 for most of my time in the army. It’s very effective. So much so that my M1A1 tank was painted woodland and could disappear in a wood line at 200 yards. That being said sitting still is the most important thing. If you have hunted animals or men you will realize both the predators and the preys eyes are most sensitive to movement.

  • @cs-rj8ru

Yeah you're right about being still. Hunters have traditionally worn flannel for centuries, and it works perfectly in the woods when you're not moving. Hell, even the British military learned very quickly during the Revolution and French and Indian Wars that even a bold red uniform makes for wonderful camouflage when hunkered down in the bushes. You can test this and it will blow your mind that you didn't see the bright red at all until they moved. It probably is because of the close relation red and green have with the way your eyes perceive color, and explains why all woodland patterns use some kind of red/brown/tawny. It's not just that it blends in with the woody materials in the woods, but the foliage as well because of the way our eyes work.

I’m more surprised by the fact people haven’t made color-swapped variants of M81 woodland. A version with dark green spots replacing the black spots, for instance. one of the main complaints about woodland is the black makes it too dark. So maybe changing the black to dark green would help.

One of the best yeah^^ but the best? Maybe for that environment. ;-) Always depends in which environment you are... in dark german forests for example, woodland is a bit too bright and green but flecktarn fits perfectly. Then, wearing flecktarn in a brighter forest which is not that dense sucks because it just doesn't fit into that specific environment. ;-) This is why I don't believe in "All terrain camos"... there is a specific camo for its specific environment... but no camo for every environment. =)

You know what would be real interesting, is doing another M81 test with faded fatigues. I heard the M81 camo was specifically designed to be printed overly dark and saturated, because they knew after heavy use in the field it will fade into a lighter color palette. I put a pair of faded surplus M81 pants next to some MultiCam gear and was very surprised at how closely it resembled MC's color palette. It was practically just MC with larger patterns.

Woodland is really good for 2d camo. Once again we see that shadowing from the abdomen and shins overrides much of the camo pattern. The camouflage seems to work best when there is wilted grass, brunches, trunks and less green vegetation. In the first part of video the camouflage was too dark to effectively blend in with various plants. Woodland works fine in the northern Europe especially fir-woods, where it is darker. Leaf forests are too bright for it, while pine forests are normally too open to effectively conceal oneself using such a patter.

I always thought it would be a good idea to issue a reversible lightweight combat smock with something like M81 woodland or Rhodesian brushstroke on one side and then Desert Brush or Multicam on the other. Sort of like what the Germans did in WW2 with Eichenlaubmuster or what the Russians are doing with their Ratnik suit.

It always amazes me how really effective good ole M81 woodland camo is. This is what we used when I was in the Army. But……we would all keep the new uniforms for garrison. The old faded almost worn out ones would be used in the field. And even though the labels very clearly said do not starch, we starched the hell out of them. The really faded ones we called snow camo…. So we tended to stand out almost as bad as ACU when out in the field.

I know that in some places MultiCam is getting a lot of love, but in Florida woodland works very well for most of the time. Unless you're against really sparse, bare, tan dead stuff in the winter, you'll blend in - and lush green material is usually nearby. That being said, MultiCam works in the winter, and olive drab can be better in the summer because the darkness in woodland can stand out in bright, lush foliage.

I have to say that Woodland and Multi-Cam are the best camo patterns out there. Multi-Cam is damn good, especially for lighter colored areas. Maybe you should do one on the old OD green uniforms. They have them in the ACU style uniforms in OD green. I've got a pair. I think they do well. Would love to see them in this perspective.

BY FAR THE BEST, I only spotted you twice and it was the dark shadow of the gear on your back that gave away the shape. Even in the open after you initially moved, if you were still you disappeared. Better then WW2 German and even better then Vietnam tiger stripes, which I love being a Vietnam era vet. You should train yourself to FREEZE, LOOK AROUND WITH YOUR EYES ONLY, NOT YOUR HEAD, SLOWLY TURN YOUR HEAR TO VIEW THE NEXT SECTOR THEN FREEZE AND LOOK WITH YOUR EYES ONLY AGAIN. You would be almost impossible to see. Better to take your time and not be seen then giving away your position.

First of all, I'd like to say thank you for a lot of great content! I'm quite new to your channel, but so far I must admit I am impressed. Just a suggestion though: Kneeling or going prone behind shrubbery or trees doesn't really show the effectiveness of the camouflage itself, it shows how good you are at hiding. Kneeling or going prone IN FRONT of said vegetation (in plain view) would better demonstrate the effectiveness of the camouflage itself, instead of the skills of the wearer.

While US Woodland is my favorite pattern, I'd say there are only two things I would change about, 1) Change the black to a blueish color (much like M90) so it doesn't attract attention. 2) Add the same pebbles from the Desert Night Camo pattern in certain areas, giving it a slight edge in terms of close up concealment.

Even after all these years I still love this stuff and still very effective, I guess that's why the RAIDERS/MARSOC still use it. We actually had the opportunity to wear some of the old ERDL (green dominant) stuff on a deployment a lifetime ago, and that stuff was absolutely awesome considering the environment we were in. Still have one of the shirt/jackets. Keep up the good work, love your vids, you remind me of my "old" first sergeant sometimes. Anyway, what do you think of the AOR2 stuff from the Navy in these types of environments?

This woodland camouflage is much better than the coyote brown you wore in a video I watched last night. I don't understand why our military replaced the woodland camouflage with the MARPAT during the mid 2000s. I would like to see a side-by-side comparison of woodland with the new Operational Camouflage Pattern in service with the U.S. Army today.

In this video the BDU did a fantastic job due to probably the darker environment due to the season. However like the other video by spray painting a very light brown to give it that sun faded look in my opinion would improve its effectiveness. I think if the military shrunk the black splotches and added maybe another brown color this uniform would be able to almost compete against multi cam.

1 HUMBLE REQUEST...it'll take your vids to the next level: please do vids where someone hides (heck, dress up a mannequin and throw it in the bushes) and the camera slowly moves to find them. That would be the ultimate test format to comment the AMAZING production format you've created. You are THE best camo demonstrator on youtube... period. Widest selection, same shooting locations and shots for consistent testing, different lighting. Brilliant! But noticing how a static subject appears to a moving observer would be amazing. No ones doing that. Thanks and keep up the good work.

The downfall of woodland Camo is the black, blackness in nature almost never occurs. Even your shadow is not black, your shadow on green grass would be just darker green. Look at the deciduous forest and you can actually see alot of not only bright green, but yellow. Also leaves are shiny they reflect light, so when you hear of camo being "too dark" its because it eats too much light. You can see here when it is very overcast, the woodland works great because the leaves are not reflecting much light and shining, making the woodland camo look like a dark blob.
