Cadence Virtuoso: Load Pull of Power Amplifier

Load pull is one of the most vital steps in the design of high frequency power amplifier in microwave and terahertz frequencies. We squeeze out the power by doing this load pull simulation to find out the optimum load impedance at which we can obtain maximum output power.
This video shows how to perform load pull simulation in cadence virtuoso using periodic steady state (PSS) analysis. We can generate constant power contours in smith chart after this simulation in cadence.
--------------------------------------------------
tiny correction at 12:52 and 13:06, select "number of steps" instead of "step size"

Cadence is one of the most used IC design tools in the industry and academia.

Good tutorial. Therefore, when you are setting the mag between 0 and 1, the sweep must not be step size to 40, because the reflection coefficient is maximum 1. I think it is linear sweep with number of step set to 40. For the angle theta, between 0 and 360, a number of step can be 40 as well.

Thank you for this wonderful tutorial on load-pull for power amplifiers. you used PSS analysis, what about hb? and you have done it for single-ended output, what about differential output. If it is possible do you have personal contact, I want to discuss some issues related to this Topic in RF amplifiers. Waiting for your kind response. 🌹🌹🌹 best regards.

Thanks a lot for posting this. It's very useful. I have a few questions: I saw in the select design variable form that you selected the magnitude variable and swept it from 0 to 1. I think you meant to choose 40 steps, but you didn't select the "number of steps" radio button. The form still said step size. Should it have been number of steps? Also, it seems 40 magnitude and 40 phase steps would run 40x40 harmonic balance simulations, is that right? It seems like it would take much longer than you show in your video. How long does it take?

Michael Mack Michael Mack You are welcome. I ran this simulation in dedicated linux server in our lab. HB doesn't take more than 2/3 seconds in server. At 12.52 and 13.06, I meant to select 'number of steps' instead of 'step size' which was mentioned in the video's description :-) KZread no longer supports in-video text banner, so I placed that info in the description. And nope, step size doesn't determine 40x40 simulation. HB's run length and problem size are primarily determined by no of harmonics. Please like and subscribe for more new videos. Thank you

@@tensorbundle For me when I do HB simulations it takes so many minutes. what do you think could be the reasons?. It doesn't converge sometimes and sometimes it shows that simulation run at some particular mag or theta is failed
