Any special thing bothering you in multi-stage PA design?

    Thanks for the tutorial Dr Anurag! They were extremely helpful. I have a question though. In real life, will the ZL you obtained from loadpull, which is 28+j0.5 be in parallel with the 50 ohms of the antenna? Or does the matching network transform the 50 ohms of the antenna to look like 28+j0.5 ohms? Thanks again and looking forward to new videos! :)

  • @BhargavaAnurag

    @BhargavaAnurag

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Mohd., ZL is the impedance that we need to present to the PA device in order to extract either the max power or best efficiency etc. The matching network transforms the actual load impedance which could be either a 50ohm or the Antenna's input impedance so that efficient power transfer can happen between the circuits.

    Hello Sir, Your video tutorial sessions are very useful and informative. I have learnt a lot about practical circuit design from all your sessions for which I am very grateful to you. May I seek suggestion regarding the transistor stability. Is it necessary that we need to check stability factor over a wide frequency range i.e. from say, 1Hz till Fmax or just around the PA operating frequency range?

  • @BhargavaAnurag

    @BhargavaAnurag

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Devi, It is not mandatory to check stability for wide freq range but it does give you advantage in terms of not to worry about oscillations at any frequency and that is called unconditional stability condition and this is how I prefer to design. You can proceed by stabilizing transistor only in your desired band of interest and this is called conditional stability condition, if you proceed with this option then I would advice to keep checking for load and source stability circles in every step of your design.

    Your design series are perfect, I have watched all so many times. Why the GaN devices are common used in 3dB compression? It has less non linearities in further compression than other transistors?

  • @BhargavaAnurag

    @BhargavaAnurag

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Andre, GaN usually have a good linearity past P1dB point compared to other devices like LDMOS hence it is preferred to use 3dB as the preferred compression point which is kind of Psat point for other devices and by operating here you can also get better PAE performance. Hope this helps....

    Hi Paula, I don't know of any method of calculating these impedances manually as you don't know anything about the transistor, you either need to know complete equivalent circuit of these devices which is not possible as no vendor would expose it, or you need to multiple measurements which are not always easy. Easiest way is to perform simulation to find out the relevant parameters.

    Thank so much sir for these tutorials.I have a question. In stability analysis , I am designing a device operating at higher frequency like 11 GHz and I want device to stable from 2GHz onwards. So for that I am using a 10 Ohm resistor. But this leads to drastical reduction in efficiency . So how can I improve the efficiency?

  • @BhargavaAnurag

    @BhargavaAnurag

    2 жыл бұрын

    Efficiency can be improved when you do the Load/Source Pull and select the appropriate point as per your need. You need to be little more careful about gain while stabilizing the device. Achieving broadband stability depends on the device characteristics, some devices are easily stabilized and some are not.

    If you are already getting readymade or internally matched amplifier directly suiting to your specifications then you can use it but it is not always possible to find such amplifiers and in those cases you will need to design your own amplifier using the basic transistor device and that is what this video is explaining.

    @Anurag Bhargava Thank you for your quick reply sir. So you mean that we need to vary the value of resistor by just trial & error and check for the stability factor? But in your Tutorial-38: Harmonic Balance Simulations you used a stabilization network that includes a series RLC branch in parallel with series gate resistance for demo_fet -2 device. Can you please explain how you chose the values of that stabilization network sir. Thank you sir. Waiting for your reply

  • @BhargavaAnurag

    @BhargavaAnurag

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Sridhar, Stabilization network topology will change based on the type of circuit you are designing, implementation methodology etc but in nutshell its either all of RLC or RC or just R alone. Also, typically in RF PCB kind of design I recommend to avoid RLC feedback kind of topology as it will suck up lot of gain but in MMIC its a good topology as you can always add 1 more gain stage to recover the gain and achieve broadband response. When you design LNA, stabilization network usually is preferred on output side so that you don't distort Noise Figure and in PAs you prefer input side to avoid handling higher power and suck up the gain offered by device too much. Once you have the tool in your hand, play with all topologies and see what works best for you as sometimes you have a straight answer to these questions unless you give it a try. Whenever playing with these networks you need to work in iteration and finalize a specific component values and toplogy. Hope this helps in some manner.

    How do I choose z center 1 and z center 2 for the device you are using in this tutorial. So that I can get required data points for further processing.

    You can download the Graphical Load Pull templates from the Keysight Knowledge Center. Location of z1, z2 can be decided by you based on the transistor. Also, it is not necessary to use both z1,z2 in all cases and you have the flexibility to ignore 2nd if not needed.

    @@BhargavaAnurag Thankyou for your time and consideration. But what if I don't have z1 corresponding to my dc biasing condition as they are different on datasheet and mine are different and also not on may frequency. Can I then use the zloads from basic loadpulls. Moreover, If I can use them then which one I have to use because one is for maximum gain and power and other is for maximum pae.

    Hi David, Cree offer their library for free but it has to be approved. When you apply for access, make sure to write your full first and last name as well as provide Company details without acronyms etc. Once you have the approval you can download the library. If you still face the issue then you can use equivalent parts from Qorvo or MACOM etc...

    Hello sir, 1. I'm able to access vdsi but unable to access idi. What can be possible reason? 2. My efficiency calculation was based on vdsi and idi waveforms(Power dissipated will be decided by overlap between these waveforms). So I get efficiency in simulation But what about measurement how can I measure efficiency once my circuit got fabricated? because now i can't access vdsi and idi anymore

    If you are not seeing intrinsic current and voltages then it is possible that your vendor hasn't exposed those values. If it is specific to Cree, I know that in one of the versions they didn't expose but the latest version of their PDK should have those values exposed so try the latest version of the PDK and you should be fine.
