Although the first undersea telegraph cable was installed in the mid 1800s, it would be another 100 years before the first transatlantic telephone cable, the TAT-1, went into service in 1956. Many other communication technologies have developed since then, but undersea cables still provide the bulk of all transoceanic communication bandwidth today.

Great presentation thank you BILL, the technological jump in communications is overlooked by most but has changed the world. Its incredible that we can communicate to most any one in the world instantly and we take it for granted.
In the 1960's my parents and I visited the Telstar ground station in Andover, Maine. Quite an interesting memory.

Excellent presentation and very enlightening. I was not aware of the latency limitations of satellites vs cables for voice as well as the throughput limitation of fiber vs microwave.
