Television and the Telephone get Multiplexed over Coaxial Cable and Microwave Radio in 1946

Ғылым және технология

In 1946 the Bell System made this short film to explain how its carrier system was used to transmit multiplexed voice and television signals.
There are still some of the original square concrete silo towers around, built at a time when a steel truss wasn't deemed stiff enough for microwaves, and today they are more likely owned by a tower company like SBA or American Tower. The delay-lens horns used in the original installations had limited bandwidth and later installations used steel towers and parabolic reflector horns. Eventually digital signals over fiber optic cable made the analog frequency division multiplex system obsolete.

From 1977 to 1987 I worked at the AT&T Television Operating Center, aka TVOC, in NYC. That building, at 32 Ave. of the Americas, is shown at 3:46 in this video. All three networks, PBS, CNN, HBO and others came into our office via cable, then through a video router, up to NY4 microwave where it began its cross country journey. At predetermined times we would switch alternate feeds from networks, containing regional commercials, to spare microwave facilities that were switched either into the networks' main "backbone" or to individual local stations. We also would troubleshoot any impairments to the networks. Networks would also send us remote feeds, news, sports, for example. One of our biggest responsibilities was "Football Sunday" where we would manage and switch games for CBS and NBC, sometimes having close to ten games simultaneously going through us, and occasionally having to monitor for a cue at the end of a game to switch to another game, lots of overtime!
