C5 Corvette Heads Up Display Walkthrough (HUD)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The C5 Corvette was introduced in 1997, but the first year the Heads Up Display was an option was 1999. The C5 Corvette's Heads Up Display was not the first time it was in an automobile or even in a GM vehicle, but it was the first time for Corvette. It's not as nice as present day Heads Up Displays, but for the time it was pretty cool. The C5 Corvette Heads Up Display lets the drive view your speed, RPMs and important vehicle conditions. The Heads Up Display has a little customization, but it is limited to what I show in this video.

    I almost rely totally on the HUD in my C7. It’s a great feature, especially on a C5. The first time I saw HUD was back in the mid 90’s in a Pontiac Bonneville. Good stuff brotha 👍

    I really, really enjoyed this upload Dave in that you've given this ole dog an incentive to learn some new tricks. 😂 I've never played with the HUD in my C6 other than to bury it out of sight at HPDE's in that the instructors will tell you to bury it to eliminate it as a possible distraction. At first glance, I think the C6 is a little different than yours. Maybe you have a friend with a C6 and you could review that as well. I've often thought that to make my C6 just a little different, would be to install a HUD on the passenger side of the dash to run in parallel with driver's side so that the passenger had something to watch as well. Of course depending on my passenger, I might have to hide the MPH dispaly.🤦‍♂️😉 Save the Wave.🙋‍♂️

    The C6 looks similar but I think you're right it's slightly different. I do have a friend local to me with a C6, so I'll try it one day. The passenger having a HUD might not be a good idea. What they don't know, ain't gonna hurt em

    Very nice vid. I didn't have the HUD on my 97 Vette. It wasn't an option that year. I went until Feb in the i8 to finally get one but it's only half effective. It only shows Speed Limit and your speed, no RPMs. That was released in newer models, so I still have to look down to see the RPMs.

    You can retrofit one - they make kits for it with the bezel. The only thing that might be different is that the display on the windshield may get a little bit more ghosting. The HUD equipped cars have a different windshield that helps with making the projected display cleaner.

    Most likely the supporting pin piece(which is plastic) in the unit that holds up the mirror to reflect the display onto the windshield is broken. The unit itself is probably still fine. If you look into your windhshield from the top outside, you can probably still see the display projecting, just not in the right place. Very common problem with these HUD units. It's an easy fix(you can put in a metal screw in place, won't ever break again), but requires you to pretty much disassemble the entire dash to get to the unit. I did this last year. Another thing you may want to check while your in there is if the automatic dimming sensor is not working. You can solder the two leads on the sensor and just have manual control on the brightness, since it's very hard to source a new sensor(which may just break again anyways).

    Definitely something wrong and you may have this issue, but I'm not sure www.corvetteforum.com/forums/c5-tech/2453423-diy-fix-for-the-dreaded-falling-hud-display.html. You will have to remove the dash to get up the HUD in order to see what the problem might be.

    Thinking about getting a C5. I'd probably get one HUD or not, but just wondering, how reliable is the HUD? Has it ever crapped out on you? Have you heard of these breaking, and how much would it cost to replace one?

  • @YellowVette04

    If you look up C5 Corvette Heads Up Display failure on the Corvette Forums you'll find some info. Generally it's not the electronics that go bad, there's a plastic pin that breaks and if that breaks then the display can't be raised in order to see it. It can be fixed if you remove the dash and stuff to get to it. Not hard, just time consuming

  • @YellowVette04

    @YellowVette04

    First make sure the channels are free of debris. There's (4), (1) in each corner under your rear hatch. You'll see them when you look. The rain water runs down those, so shoot water down there and make sure water runs freely. If that's fine, probably the best way to find the leak is to remove the rear carpet. It's not difficult at all, wash the car with lots of water and see if you find the leak. Just bc there's water in one spot, that doesn't mean it can't come from somewhere else and just settle there. The seams in the tub sometimes leak and you'll see it then.
