C Dory 22 goes to the Dry Tortugas - We find out the boat can handle way more than we can!

What was planned as a 3 hour tour turned into the "3 hour tour".... Dry Tortugas is beautiful as always - a midnight surprise wakes a few boaters up - but all are safe!

    It is not self bailing, one fault the boat has is the bilge is on the starboard side mid ship….. so the way she was beached put the bilge high and dry. I’ll be adding a inner cabin bilge and one to go in front of the plug at the transom.

    Dude.... Balls the size of coconuts that swing behind you when you walk ! ! What a trip. I am NOT into 5 hour ass beatings. Idea.... Get a Rule 500 bilge pump with LONG wires (15')... Use it portable style. Couple of alligator clips and store it for emergencies in a freezer zip lock bag..... You never know. Some day you might even lend it to another disabled boat. Keep your mounted on the starboard side pump. Just carry a back up in a bag. Love your clips.

    Michelle deserves the coconuts award, she said “yes” not fully knowing what she was getting into! Portable bilge is a solid idea! I will go that route! I was thinking to hardwire in 1 on the port side in the cabin and one near the plug…. But I like your idea better! Thank you!

    @@kentuckyfriedfishing I was impressed the C-Dory made the trip. We’re trying to decide which boat is right for us. Needs to be easily trailerable with a gas 1 ton van. I’ve heard concerns about C-Dorys being hot in the south. Any feedback on that? Have you guys considered Bimini Bahamas? I don’t think it’s much further that Dry Tortugas.

    Curious about what kind of anchor and how much chain you had down, and a rough estimate of scope? Our 22 has bilges in the center of boat in front of door, and directly in front of the drain plug. I have yet to see one with a bilge on the side, but it seems like the bilge was a secondary problem to anchor failure? Glad you made it back, and the boat is still on the right side of the water! Safe travels and howdy from the Northwest.

    I have 30’ of 5/16” chain and I had 90’ of rode in 9’ of water, using a 13lbs claw anchor…. Since I’ve upped to a 20lb danforth as a sled won’t fit the boat without hitting the bow.

  • @kentuckyfriedfishing

    Since the trip I’ve added a windlass and an extra anchor. I trust the motor, most motor issues are fuel issues…. So if one goes down… so goes the others. We also have a kicker that will rescue if needed, I keep the kicker fuel separate for the previous reason.

    How did that much water get in the boat? Rain? Or ..... Once you beached, waves started slapping against and over the freeboard of the tilted boat?

  • @kentuckyfriedfishing

    @kentuckyfriedfishing

    Жыл бұрын

    Water was from wave slap, there was between 40-60 mph winds, depends on who you ask, my anemometer said it hit 56 mph, when we beached we have 5-6’ waves just coming over the port side. Ended up with about 12” of water in the boat.

    @@kentuckyfriedfishing That’s my favorite place on the planet. I’ve been there. several times…… but always on a helicopter. I served 30 years. I was thinking maybe it was May. Glad it all worked out for you guys. One trip we stayed in personal tents on Loggerhead. We flew over to Ft Jeff and cooked steaks and brought beer and invited ALL the Park Rangers. The next morning about sunrise the Ranger came over to us on his boat and took us to dive on a Windjammer ( maybe 30 feet?) about a mile SW of Loggerhead. I always tried to take shave kit stuff, sodas, Gatorade , breads, lunch meat to the Rangers. Today I found your channel and subd.
