C. difficile Infection in the Older Adult

C. difficile is a public health threat that is often under recognized and under diagnosed in patients around the world. In older adults aged 65+ years, C. difficile infections take the lives of 1 in 11 patients within a month of diagnosis. Commonly thought of as a disease associated with hospital settings, community-associated C. difficile infections are on the rise. It is important to understand the prevalence and persistence of C. difficile and how C. difficile disproportionately affects adult patients. During this virtual symposium, a panel of experts will discuss the risks and clinical considerations regarding the management of C. difficile, as well as answer your questions about this disease.
This is an industry-supported symposium held in conjunction with the GSA 2021 Annual Scientific Meeting. Sponsored by Pfizer.

    I WISH SOMEONE WOULD UNDERSTAND THAT SENIORS NOW WORK WELL PAST 65!! If you want to stop the spread include analysis of the population that ends up homeless and spread it through that population. I am on the verge of losing my job because of my recurring c. Diff and the resulting absences! This isn't an academic fear - as a senior working in retail, I live paycheck to paycheck. I can't take my humira so my arthritis is crippling me. I am on my 3rd bout and have one month to get this straightened or I lose my job and end up in a homeless shelter. So people that only have to worry about the emotional effect of this horrifying disease need to count their blessings.

    My mother just passed and was with a c diff infection that made her septic… her body had taken such a beating after she fell and broke her ankle, she had all the right factors to be a victim of this nasty bacteria, recent surgery, over age 65, multiple comorbidities, and she was in rehab facility and on antibiotics…. within two weeks she passed after being admitted to the ICU! WE HAVE TO FIND SOMETHING SO THAT PEOPLE OUT THERE DONT SUFFER LIKE MY MOTHER AND SO MANY OTHERS!!!!

    You can’t trust them… your gut is telling you right… the medical community just goes by textbook.. and have no clue sometimes. That’s why you have to be self advocate or if you have family be advocates that research on their own.

    I was contaminated with this horrific bacteria during a hospital stay. There was no antibiotics involved in what I was there for. I am on day 73 with chronic diarrea after that. No help in Vancomycin or Flagyl at all. So thank you for this informative video.

    Patients who have surgery are given antibiotic to avoid infection during surgery. It is standard practice. Hospitals are full of germs.

    I was told that just this week about my asthma, in the hospital where I had been treated for 5 days. "There is nothing else we can do." It is quite the punch to the face when they tell you that. Why ever go back? Do you get your things in order to die? I don't know about this lady, but how do you go to a hospital or clinic if you have extreme diarrhea and are doubled over in pain? Now, I think I have C. diff., but they want to see me. I can't drive! I can't leave a bathroom! I'm laying here thinking ... I'm done. I'm just going to be on water until it stops. I have all kinds of medicines I was discharged with, but I'm not taking anything until this stops because maybe it ISNT CDI.

    I had to produce my sample at home, immediately refrigerate it, then immediately take immodium. In 10 hours I was able to get it to the lab and drop it off. Same thing to get to the doctor. Take immodium to get there and back. They will give you the stool collector kit while you are there. It is SO INFURIATING that they just don't get it!!

    And if it is c. Diff and you don't do anything about it, it will result in having to use a colostomy bag or dying. They don't tell you that at your visit.

    Work is the perfect place to get it. You can pick ot up from surfaces up to 5 years after c. Diff spores land there if it isn't cleaned with bleach. And the doctors usually don't tell you to stay home from work so you don't infect your coworkers or the cleaning staff.

    My friend was diagnosed with colorectal cancer stage 1. She was exposed one on one with a patient who had cdiff infection twice in 8 months. I wonder if the cdiff spores was inhaled by her and that is why she got stage 1 colon cancer.

  • @annhance

    @annhance

    Right! Not all probiotics are created equal. There must be specific identifiable organisms that your biome needs to correct itself and beat c. Diff. Introducing organisms your biome doesn't need won't help much.
