Thanks for a frank and different review of the Dolphin. These cars from China are great value due to the manufacturers and government having a long term approach to investment and profitability alongside some fresh thinking. The European manufacturers were caught napping by the Japanese industry, the Korean industry and now the Chinese. Watch as import taxes and other restrictions go up to protect legacy manufacturers who have been too busy chasing short term profits and not investing in the future.

There is no “profitability” in ev manufacturing. Ford and GM are losing tens of thousands per car and this continues across the board. Chinese EVs are heavily subsidised by the Chinese government to keep companies like BYD afloat so they can control the market. Chinese cars have been and continue to be cheap rubbish with second rate steel, rubbish rustproofing etc. they are manufactured on the cheap with cheap parts and cheap manufacturing processes as with everything from china. I certainly wouldn’t buy an expensive, high quality ev let alone an el cheapo one from china. Too many things can and usually go wrong.
Matt this is a good factual, unbiased, informative review. Anyone who would unsubscribe from your channel because of it needs their head examining. If the European car industry wants to beat the Chinese they need to make better cars at an affordable cost. I'm sure we have the knowledge, expertise, technology and innovative skills to do that.

I have a Pug 308 64 with touchscreen controls for climate control and sat nav mainly, but I keep the screen on climate option (a simple dab), but rarely change it and it doesn't give me grief if I need to change things. Most of the time I know where I am going but, if I need the sat nav, it still prompts if I am on the climate or radio or trip computer displays so I cannot see it as a problem. If you are needing to frequently change settings in the car, I would suggest that you need to check out why. The roller controls would drive me bananas and with a bit of dirt and dust or too much cleaner might start to stick.
I would imagine that the vertical screen position is for following a sat nav up a garden path. The emergency glass breaking hammer is compulsory in some countries as end up in deep water with failed electrics and the windows and doors are locked, doors can also jam/lock in even a minor RTC. A vehicle needs to be full of water to be able to open a door anyway as the pressure will keep it shut.

A well balanced review Matt. I have to agree with the hate of 'access everything via the screen' trend and I totally agree it could be dangerous having to take your eyes off the road (and getting another beep) to operate it. Muscle memory learns where the physical switches, knobs and buttons which is not the case with flat glass of a screen. Considering the competition the price seems OK and things have moved on a lot in recent years. Anyway thanks for the review but we only need a few annoying quirks and it can spoil the whole car. Thanks for sharing.

I like the idea of them and one would probably work for me but I'm abit short of the 30 odd k to buy one and when paid for it would be worthless with a big worry as to where would you get parts for a car like this at 6+ years old. The Chinese seem to be knocking out different models quite regularly and your shiny new car would be like windows 98 quite quickly with no guarantee of anyone being able to work on it. The possibility of computer says No when a problem comes up would turn it into an ornament 😭 Maybe I'm a doubting Thomas but my 12 year old kia and 27 year old cinquecento are still going like the clappers and I can tinker with them myself 😊👍🇮🇪

Sounds like a lot of gamesmanship! It's not like German cars aren't subsidised with incentives and tax breaks by the German government (and likewise cars made nearly anywhere else). But certainly Chinese brands are on a mission to win global market share (and possibly put legacy automakers out of business). The approach of 25% import tariff and 100% BEV import tariff of the United States has kept Chinese cars completely out of the USA for the time being, interestingly.

@@alexmcwhirter6611 quite a few European manufacturers have said don't want the tariffs including BMW and Mercedes because they manufacture some electric cars in China and import them to the EU. "antithetical to classic car culture" How so? There *are* battery enthusiasts like Robert from Aging Wheels who love rebalancing cells, rebuilding battery packs, tinkering with inverters, designing battery controllers etc. You can absolutely tinker and tune battery systems and electric motor(s) on BEVs, just like combustion engines on ICE vehicles. It's just different tuning, grounded (pardon the pun) in electrical engineering instead of getting air and fuel in and out to go suck-squeeze-bang-blow! Surely a battery enthusiast is just as much a car enthusiast as a petrolhead is? I may have misinterpreted that as the "what is classically considered the culture of cars", instead of "the culture of classic cars", but you can do BEV conversions on classic cars too! There are BEV Ferrari 308s out there among other things! Of course I prefer the sound of a 3.0L V8 to the whine of an electric motor, but it takes all sorts after all. For something like a Citroen DS that was never famous for its engine anyway, a BEV conversion might make a lot of sense?

1500kg would be a decent weight for a C-segment car, only 200-250kg more than a ICE. However having seen these about (there is a fetching mauve colour available!), they are sized more like a B-segment car. So 1500kg is pretty heavy for a B-segment car. But I guess the advantage is a bigger range, compared to something like a Mini Cooper electric which only weighs 100kg more than the ICE version (but has a very small range). I'd like to see BEVs get as close to weight parity as possible IMO, less weight makes everything better! (Supposedly the Mini Cooper SE is a hoot to drive and nearly as fun as the regular ICE Mini Cooper S, thanks to the weight being close.)

Serious question, not facetious, to all that do it: Why do you adjust the climate control so "often"? Isnt the point of it, conversly to manual control, that you can set it to a temperature and the rest is automatic? Seems to be a bugbear for many in the US and UK, but I have never seen anyone that touches it where I am at, and I dont do it myself either. Is it a generational issue where people are used to normal control and cant help themselves? Sort of like a lot of "older" people are scared of cruise control (at least where I am at), because they arent used to it? Again, not criticising anyone, just curious. Myself, I got it at 21C for my cars, and it works perfectly. I never touch it really.

For alot of people thats what works best, the EV isnt practical for long trips but very cheap for local journeys
I would love to see you review a Peugeot 1007 and a Renault Modus.
A deposit of £269 and the same monthly payment with 8000 miles per year is a very cheap way to run a car; a similar size petrol vehicle like a polo will have an upfront payment of c.£3000 and even at 50 mpg will cost another £90 a month for fuel so this little EV shows another £50 a month saving there also when charging on the domestic electricity tarif. Not for me but the whole life cost (49 months) of this car is starting to look very attractive for many motorists if they do a proper costing model which is why we the Govt. will soon follow the EU and impose high import taxes on state subsidised EV's from China.
Because I'm juvenile, when you said that the boot had a false bottom in it, I immediately imagined a pair of plastic buttocks in the luggage area.

Thanks, that my view - I want to know about everything. Ill (probably) never own a steam train or ocean liner but will watch a video about them
Reminds me in every way of those plastic guitars that came out of China about 15-20 years ago. All gimmicky designs that found a small niche of fans who looked at them, talked about them with their friends, and never actually played the things.
you cant use a mobile whilst driving , but you can have a big screen on the dash lol, electric cars not for me i will stick with my rover r8's , still liked the video
5:25 I heard a lot about Chinese EVs going up in flames, while at the same time locking up the doors and windows, basically making it impossible to get out of it when it's on fire. That's probably why there's a tool for breaking open the windows.

yeah stories....you can always open the door from inside regardless of power locking thats a fundamental design
where I live has the Least amount of chargers per 100,000 population in the country ,so it's a no from me .And big screens now look cheap and old fashioned.
Deffo wont unsubscribe .... Ev's are all well and good ...... Until you have to use public charging , until that is far better i dont care what incentives / bully tactics government & local authorities use
I will say...Don't tell ppl how they can like or dislike..It's a choice to watch your Platform not Mandatory....Do I like EV's no...Hybrids yes ..Makes sense

Why not just not watch then? He is talking specifically about the like and dislike button, surely its not that hard to watch something else instead of clicking "dislike"?
Not my cup of Tea, Thanks for the review Matt.
When you take into account the high depreciation it is not really a bargain. A petrol car will cost less and last longer.

a range rover will lose more than this entire car costs in 6 months depreciation
I hate EV cars and reviews! is not what i came here to say ;) I was interested in the BYD Seagull so this caught my eye. Any plans for a seagull review? Not sure they are in the UK yet or not. One day hoping to convert one of my classics to Electric power if i can afford it. Would love a battery Morris Marina!

Not the car for me. I'll stick with my 2010 Honda CR-Z hybrid. Even Jeremy Clarkson owned one of those and I quote here from his review back in 2010: "I like it because every time I climbed into it, it made me happy. I like the look of the thing. I like the interior."

An MG4 is much nicer inside. I wanted to like the Dolphin but could never live with that cheap dash.

Yeah but, yeah but, will the airbags deploy in a crash, will it set your house on fire.....Basically. Is it safe?
@TassieLorenzo
22 күн бұрын
The first point, sure why not, the second point, maybe. There have been recalls on both EV batteries and household (home solar backup, I guess home solar is not popular in the UK for obvious reasons!) batteries even from major household battery brand names like LG (not just Tesla or automaker-adjacent battery manufacturers). BYD are definitely not the least reputable Chinese car, that would be something like Foton utes (pickup trucks) which some people buy and then can't buy basic parts as their motor factor has never heard of it and suppliers have no stock!

@@TassieLorenzohe’s talking about the well known problem of BYDs in particular in china not deploying airbags in crashes causing deaths. BYD is also the worst for burning in china. This is where it gets its nickname “Burn Your Driveway”.

Wouldn’t buy that if it was half price, it’ll be absolute junk long term
That's why I love this channel: every time something completely different. And yes, not a huge fan of EV's. But they are here, so we have to get used to them. Great honest review Matt!

Great video Matt, I enjoy your broad motoring church. Ignore the haters, despite the hysteria that some promote, evs are gradually going to dominate and true motoring enthusiasts should embrace them. Lots of time for us to enjoy piston cars too.

Nah this is a review as a motoring journalist. Within reason^, Matt is allowed to be critical. ^ If the conclusion happened to be "this is a pile of dog turd", then the worst that can happen is no more BYD press cars coming Matt's way!
