    Save your money. Even professional accordionists never use all the base buttons on a 120-base accordion -- 60 or at most 72 base accordions are cheaper and lighter and one made by a guality Italian or German company will sound every bit as good as the big, heavy, expensive accordions. FYI, I started playing at 8, started playing professionally at 12, and at 81, still perform at parties, restaurants, wineries, etc. I have owned a half dozen accordions, so I speak from long experience.

    Funny, I always liked more the dry sound. Even tho my accordions do have 3 clarinets, I usually use the harmonium register (basson + dry clarinet + picolo) as a master. I think it is because one of the styles of music I like the most uses dry accordions.

    Wet vs. dry is primarily what it is called; if you want to get more technical a low reed is called a bassoon, a dry middle reed is called a clarinet, a wet middle reed is called a musette (which can be wetter or dryer depending on the accordion), and the octave above that is called piccolo.

    I've definitely learned something new, luckilly because I am in the UK, the most common accordion I have seen is the tipical steriotipical sound people associate with it, just like the one I saw yesterday, those are very great for streat musicians, a nice walk into town is always great when you hear those playing, especially when they play the songs that were written for that type of accordion, for instance, the northumberland waltz, throw in a tin wistle and other instruments and you can make it expressive

    This video was extremely helpful. Without it I probably would’ve spent my money on a dry tuned accordion and gone years before I learned what I was missing. As a result of watching this, I knew exactly what I was looking for. Only problem, my local selection was terrible, and I wasn’t interested in making multiple two hour round trips to discover all the accordions were either crappy or out of my price range. There’s also the issue of being a beginner with an instrument and having the ‘performance anxiety’ of playing in a store, or just lack of experience to tell whether or not the instrument sounds good. Buying instruments online is also a difficult experience, but armed with my keywords, musette tuned, wet tuned, etc. I scoured eBay and multiple music store websites, literally around the globe. I know I could have contacted the man in this video, but I’m a stubborn bastard and wanted to do my own searching. Finally, in researching a Ukrainian eBay listing, I happened onto this accordion. I fell in love with the sound and the looks, and purchased it. It gets here next week, and I keep rewatching the video in anticipation! All I can say is being able to see and hear an instrument in practice, while inferior to trying it in person, is amazingly helpful for those circumstances when you must shop online. kzread.info/dash/bejne/o61oycWEZpi4abA.html

    You’d have to replace the bassoon reeds with clarinet reeds to get the wet sound. Is it possible? Technically yes, but it would be too much work to get the smaller clarinet reeds to fit in perfectly where the larger bassoon reeds normally go. Better off just getting an accordion with MM or LMM (Low “bassoon”, Middle “Clarinet”, Middle “Clarinet+”) reeds.

    German accordion player here:) : The extra registers are because the accordion has some registers with special "vibe" 1. Cassotto: there's an extra resonance room in some Registers/choruses(usually on a single middle and single low register) on high end accordions, that makes the accordion sound more soft (if you once hear it you never want to go back) 2. Tremolo: some people want a not resonating and a resonating tremolo, that's why on some five chorus instruments with three in the middle you can switch between the classic sound tremolo and the "flat" tremolo. So altogether, there are on some special accordions up to 21 registers where you can combine if you want to have flat/normal tremolo and if you want to have cassotto

    Mostly you find the wet musset sound in Italian accordeon brands: Paolo Soprani, Galanti, Marinucci, Ballone Burini, Fratelli Crossio, Accordeola. The dry sound can be found more in German accordeons, Hohner (not all models), weimester. In my case i have a Hohner accordeon Cassotto I model, it has dry sound, and also i have a Marinucci Italian accordeon, 80 bass, with wet mussette sound, basically i like booth, but certain type of music like french chanson, mexican music, or dofferent type of folk music i like more in the Marinucci. For Tango, bolero and Classical music, i like more the dry sound the Hohner.

    Jenn Preston Just type in “12 bass accordion “ on Amazon and it should show up as first on the list. It says with Zorro sounds polishing cloth but shipped from a Front Row Electronics. However, ask Front a Row and they say they don’t have a listing for $428. It’s there and perhaps Amazon is discounting it or they messed up the listing but normally Amazon honors your order. I just last night ordered the SofiaMari traveler accordion from a Musicians Friend. It’s $279 with free shipping, etc. and I got a small discount. I got the Zebra color one the show on KZread. I think that will suit me for now and doesn’t cost as much if I care to go bigger. I used the Amazon tablet when looking up the 12 bass.

  • @moshezuchter

    @moshezuchter

    So, one middle sound - clarinet - gives a single reed sound. It's clean. A second middle reed, also clarinet, but tuned differently, gives the musette sound. A lower reed - thicker - gives a bassoon sound.

    Let me know if i am right: Accordeons who has Piccolo, they have commonly a sound "Dry" in the ( MM) mussette register and they are more suitable for types of music like: Jazz, Tango, Classical music. Instead Accordeons who does no have Piccolo( who has the middle and down voices) they mostly have the (MM) or (MMM) mussette register, with Tremolo "Wet" sound, these accordeons fit more in the music: Folk, France traditional music, Tex mex, Traditional music from countries. Am i ok with this fact? i have an Italian Alessandrini Accordeon with Piccolo, and the (MM) is dry, it has very very small tremolo almost nothing, and i also i have a medium size Marinucci Accordeon who has Clarinette and musette ( MM), No picolo... it has Tremolo wet sound MM like the one in the video

A pity the smaller accordeons often have that musette sound. So, here in Europe, we seek small accodeons with that dry sound. 😉

    Well, me too. Musette/wet sounds out of tune to me (because well, it is!). We don't detune one of the paired strings on a mandolin. We don't encourage half the choir to sing slightly flat or sharp to make the choir "shimmer". But then again, I can't stand operatic vibrato either, so it's a matter of taste. I personally am not so sure that the "average" American prefers wet tuning. I think the wet tuned accordions played on the Lawrence Welk show killed the accordion in the USA. I like french folk accordion (and tango music bandoneon), which is/are played dry, unlike the Paris musette sound that lots of people prefer. Personally, I wish somebody would make a one reed B-griff accordion with 3.5 octaves, and 5 rows of just bass (5 rows that relate to each other exactly like the two inside rows of stradella system). That would be a lightweight instrument that would do everything I want, and would allow bass lines to be played easily instead of the boring unchangeable chords of the stradella system. Lightweight melodeons are the most fun to play, but limited by their key oriented layouts and somewhat arbitrary bass systems. OK, sorry for ranting, everybody gets to have an opinion..... I appreciate the info about the value of two reed dry tuned full sized accordions being low, and why the value is low. I have a couple gathering dust at my house, and now I know that the value of them is small, which means I can use the reeds for experimental custom modifications of other boxes without worrying that I am destroying something of inestimable cultural value. If I do come across a wet tuned accordion, I will be happy to pass it along to Martin, who can get it to somebody that likes musette, since the main thing is to keep accordion playing alive in a world full of electronic keyboards.

Now I have a Hohner Atlantic 120 (1 Bassoon / 2 Clarinette / 1 Piccolo). Here in Germany most of the accordeons have a tremolo voice, only a few which do not have it. Seems we shipped all of them to the american continent ;) BTW the russian accordeon (Bajan) often also does not have the tremolo voice, seems to be more common there.

If someone is looking for the most a normal accordion then you can find hundreds, thousands perhaps, looking for a musette? Good luck. The only way to get a Musette in my opinion is if you find one on ebay (rare and not many), you found one by chance or if you buy it new. I would never recommend buying an accordion with a dry sound. Most people do not like that sound, they want the ' swinging' sound of an accordion, which is only reached uf you have more than one 8 reed. Many are willing to pay a bit more for that. Even my grandson of only 5 years old hears the difference!
