Huge reforms were made by the Lao government in 1986, including property and business ownership. Both were encourage by the government. If you could prove you've lived and worked the land for two generations (I think), the land was yours as long as it remained productive, eg farming. Proof was supplied by their Family Book (Neenee's family should have at least one). The Family Book is like a record of births, deaths and marriages within the family. After the reforms in 1986, was the first time in history the Lao actually owned their own land. Before that, all land was owned by the royal family.

I am not quite sure about that may be for the foreigner. I heard some rumor that the Lao oversea went back and bought house and land for a few years then the Lao government come to accuse them of fraud then they just seized the property without legal action. Thanks.

That’s not true. Lao people owned land before 1975, during the monarchy. The Monarchy basically owned nothing after the French colonial period. It was after 1975 the communist government collectivized property and took land ownership away and made all property state property. That was a complete economic failure though, so they reprivatized land ownership approximately the same time as the fall of the USSR. To be honest that was basically the end of any communist economic reforms

@@homebrandrules Ask any Laotian person who lived through the 1970s and 1980s. These are my own family's experiences. Plus, there are plenty of land records of owners in Laos and many history books that mention the communist take over and the collectivization reforms, also how disasterous they were. Obviously what the original poster said can't be right, because there is noway the monarchy owned anything in 1986, because the monarchy was abolished in 1975 after the communist take over. By that point the communist had long already killed the king, queen, and crown prince

Hey Todd,,Excellent video,,I've always loved the rantish ones! Lol yeah buddy,,I kinda figured I was aced out of the upstairs rooms with a view. Lol hell's bells ,,a snake proof bamboo hut would work if I have access to a sit-down shitter. Lolol."hey Neenee,,is that working better? ' fucking good mate "lmao that was perfect,,sweet innocent Neenee,,fucking good mate. Thanks buddy,,I needed a laugh like that. That hardware store is the bomb. I could see a few exploratory expeditions to that store. I'm wondering if the unusual square electrical device might have been an inverter,,for solar,,to convert 12 or 24 volt current to 120? Just an idea. One of my fave things about the village is the sky. Has a quality to it that V-town doesn't have. Omg that masonry block machine is something I've never ever seen. It's rather amazing. Wonder how many days it takes for them to cure. I noticed he wasn't stacking them in direct sunlight,,because they'd dry way to fast and crack,,if not crumble completely. Dude ,I think the terraced garden beds near the river is a great idea. You have 3 times the land you'd need to produce veg and eventually fruit too,,for 5 big restos like Neenee's. I'm super happy for you guys,,that you can do this house project. Its gonna be great. Thanks for the great video Todd. You guys take care and be safe Ttyl,,,Marlon

Hi Todd great video as always. As to the land ownership issue, there is a two step process with a white paper, then a yellow, or gold one. The white paper means it is not yours to sell as some locals here found out. Some Chinese traders "bought" land through a Laos agent from locals. the government got wind of the deal and told the Laos sellers to give the money back, and then took the land back (without compensation) to the government holdings. If you have the gold paper and the government want to take the land back they have to compensate, but if you only have a white paper, you have no claim for compensation. The other thing was a guy talking about all the rain in Vietnam should of affected the river where you are. It cant, as Vietnam is down stream. That said you are right about the dams affecting the river flow. However at some point they will let the water out to generate power and at that point it should flow past your window. Final point is we are close to where the new bridge is going in and the government has already marked out a 6 SQ KM area as a special economic zone, and we all know what that means.

  • @NowinLao

    @NowinLao

    3 жыл бұрын

Your last point Chris, about the bridge. Not the new bridge I'm talking about. You're down near Thakhek, I know. The next bridge built after that is near Xanankham. Hopefully no economic zone there. Have visited one, and will never again!

I have also seen locals in Laos gardening next to rivers, but this clearly leads to extensive soil erosion through run off during the rainy season. There is little knowledge or concern regarding taking care of nature within the culture. I would recommend you plant tall trees to provide binding in the sub-soil so as also not disturb your view, and then grow useful perennial ground-covering plants to minimise soil loss.

Todd , question about the current prices of land in Laos. What's the current price for an acre (whatever the Lao equivalent is)?

I plan on taking my teenage kids to Laos hopefully by the end of 2021. I came to the U.S. at the age of one. So this is all foreign to me even though I am Laotian American....Look beautiful 😍 really looking forward to our trip

Once I move out of the US to SEA all I need is 2 trees about 12' apart to hang my jungle hammock..so ya need to plant another close to that palm...lol That light may be to see those bikes etc. with no lights that are trying to pass. That way they don't swerve over and make speed bumps out of them.

With regards to the light facing backwards on the trucks, its interesting to see the Lao people doing that. I lived in 🇨🇳 China for over a decade and those truck drivers do the same thing (you mostly see it in the countryside). I cannot say why they do it with confidence, but I think it is reasonable to assume that they do it in order to see the road behind them at night. The light may be blinding to you from behind, but if their attitude is anything like the Chinese drivers, they are not at all concerned about you, because its all about themselves. Pass me if you can. I mentioned earlier that it was interesting to see the truck drivers in Lao doing that because when I was in Laos (coming from Shanghai) I couldn’t help but notice that the Lao drivers were so much more courteous than the Chinese drivers (that was 5-6 yrs ago).

The truck didn’t have any lights working, that was the reversing light and they were just letting you know they were in front of you but too silly to turn it off when you want to overtake

Thanks. Very interesting. I wonder if that is a fish trap and put in an a made channel to catch all the fish that come through. Sorry about the dams. Same in Luang Prabang too. Damming of Mekong tributaries like the Nam Kan, riverbank is being affected by the water rising and falling all the time. It drops, then they let water out of the dam, so it rises quickly, then drops again. And the lady who runs the bamboo bridge told me that they are supposed to be warned in case it damages the bridge, but they are not always told.

Unsure about marrying just to buy land, but you may want to look into setting up a company and buying land under that company name so worse case scenario is you still would own a portion legally as the founder/ceo etc

Todd,,, the fish in the buckets under the counter is the start of padaek, the Lao fermented fish sauce. Horrible, smelly, putrid stuff. We banned it from our house in Laos. If Aussies love Vegemite, Lao love padaek. I had a jar of Vegemite in the cupboard in Vientiane. Our mae ban asked what it was. I told her it's Australian padaek. She believed me but couldn't work out why it smelled like beer. Good to see you didn't lose your machete thingy. In Australia, someone would have nicked it.

How long have the Chinese been holding back the water. We took a 3-day ferry from Luang Prabang to town opposite Chiang Rai back in 1999. Is it still possible to do that?

I did it back in March 2017. But the captain was talking about his concerns about the water levels. We had plenty of depth though and it was ok. Also, had a great time. Now I'm retired and I cant go just about anywhere. Friggin open up soon, PLEASE.
