    Took an aircraft crash investigation course for my degree. The literature stated shoulder belts should mount so they are at the height of the shoulder or slightly higher. Not below. Mounting below adds a spinal compresion component in a forward impact.

    could be different? I read that they should be 0 to 10 degrees below shoulder, but you know more than me so I'm not sure

    @@Pathfinding-earth I think that this probably due to the difference in expected forces in an airplane crash landing vs racing/ off road instances. The seat and harness manufacturers have years of racing innovations and crashes that their information is based on as well.

    All valid points. The documentation we provide is based on SFI specifications which say to mount the shoulder straps no more than 10 degrees above or below. Basically as straight out the back of the seat as possible.

    On the shoulder harness mounting situation, Morgan has a point, but the proper mounting for shoulder harnesses are perfectly aligned with your shoulders and straight back. if you have your harnesses mounted below your shoulders so it pulls down on you, if you have a front impact and any rate of speed it could compress your spine and cause severe damage to your back or worse, nerve damage, with the belts aligned across the top of your shoulders it will still keep you locked down perfectly and that same impact would probably only break your collar bones.

    Awesome video guys, I have fixed a lot of harness and seat mount setups on cars in the past, videos like this are seeing less and less people who don’t understand the principles of racing harnesses which is fantastic. If anyone wants more information the FIA In schedule J shows mounting for harness including the inclination angles ideal for each strap and body placement. Thanks for the content dudes.

    On the lap belt, you want it across the hip bones (structural part of the body), not up in the soft stomach. Which is also another use of the submarine strap, with it in the system, you can crank on the shoulders, and the lap belt can’t rise up from the hips to the stomach.

    Another pointer. Where the lap belts are clipped to eyelets. On Simpson Racing harnesses (I figure it's the same for others) there's a pin size hole you can use to safety wire the latches that clip to eyelets to prevent from being able to unclip.

    I also heard the shoulder harness should be level with shoulders to avoid spinal compression upon impact.

    You should add some info about strapping in little ones. IE what not to do, proper booster .... etc

  • @thedude6650
    @thedude66502 жыл бұрын

    Good info here. Only thing I would add is the shoulder harnesses should be as close to level with where your shoulders are height wise, if that makes sense. If they are mounted much lower than where the shoulders are then you could compress your spine in the event of a crash. There is fudge factor here like 5-15 degrees downhill allowance. The info is on the interwebs I just can’t think of the exact numbers right off.

    In the world of drag racing, the crossbar that the shoulder belts mount to should be no more than 4” below the height of the shoulders and no more than 15° angle from the shoulders down to the crossbar. That angle will change depending on how far behind the seat the crossbar lives. The shoulder straps shouldn’t mount above the shoulder height. FWIW

Will you be going over the electrical switches for accessories with recommendations & reasons for recommendations? As always, a great video & thank you for sharing.

    If the car is small, or has tight packaging you can flip the direction of the pull on the lap belts so you pull up to tighten

    I love all the info that these videos provide. My only hesitation is the sternum strap. In a worst case scenario you have to pull the lap belt release strap and The sternum clip. I'm sure it's great for comfort, just makes me alittle uneasy about sternum strap release in chaotic scenario..

  • @Prpseats

    @Prpseats

    Great point, Bobby. And you're right. The less unclipping you have to do in an emergency, the better. The sternum strap is mainly used for keeping the shoulders close enough together so, if you have a seat like James is in here which has the slots to do that, you can do without it.

    What’s everyone’s thoughts on 6 point harness? I bought a new Polaris PRo and it came with a 6 point harness. I’ve only used 5 points and I personally like the 6 point harness. But it’s hard to get really tight

  • @Prpseats

    Mounted properly, a 6-point (split sub strap) harness can reduce chest compression up to 50%. It acts kind of like a parachute harness; wrapping around your legs. Problem is, most seats don't accommodate the split sub strap.
