The trick I’ve always found with German cars (I’ve had Audi’s and BMW’s) is to totally ignore the manufacturers servicing guidelines. It’s my belief that they deliberately make them long so your car dies way way sooner than it should, so you either spend heaps with them on repair, or just get a new car. I’ve always dropped variable servicing and gone for 10,000 miles or 12 months, regardless of mileage. In the case of my 3 series, this is *half* the duration BMW recommends. Same applies to gearboxes. I’ve always changed the fluid every 60,000 miles. My last Audi was the notoriously unreliable 2.5tdi with the equally unreliable multitronic box. I took that car up to 200,000 miles on original gearbox, turbo, camshafts, the lot. I had the gearbox serviced 3 times, and the VNT mechanism on the turbo cleaned. Other than that, excluding basic suspension wear and tear, I had zero problems with it.

I own 2013 335ix with 76 miles. The car is been with very expensive repairs after the warranty expires I replaced the oil filter gasket, transmission pan gasket, ingine gasket pan, thermostat, gas tank because was cracked on top and was the risk the car be on fire. It costs me 2 grand to replace it. I'm going to sell it because is a fire pit of money every time broke down. I will not recommend BMW because even if you do the all the maintenance manufacture suggests it will brake no matter what.

Very informative video, potential buyers should definitely take note of the points raised. I have a 328i n20 engine. I had both timing chain fault and turbo failure in 06/2018. My model is early 2012, I got it used 2 years ago. My car had 57000 miles and was out of warranty when these problems occurred. BMW found fault with and preventatively replaced the timing chain, replaced the turbo and covered the cost for the parts as a goodwill gesture. I was asked to pay (a very reduced rate) for the labour, which I think is reasonable given the vehicles warranty has expired. If you develop any of the faults mentioned in the video, call BMW group and see what options you have, you don’t always need to spend thousands or pay the full cost for out of warranty repairs.

Man ... Thanks for scaring the shnizle out of me, I avoided buying a 2.0 Audi TT after watching your video... A few years ago I bought a 1.8T VW Beetle Cup edition thinking these "common faults" on forums won't happen, I mean what are the chances? right? ... A few months later, I had the turbo failed, A/C compressor failed, A/C condenser leaked, and I dealt with a boost leak mystery for about 3 months ... All of which meant I spent more than the actual car on fixing the damn this .... LOL ... morale of the story: Listen to this dude, he does his homework and is pretty damn precise !

Got an F31 320d 184hp, 2012 delivered , one of the first touring variants with manual gearbox and Head up display. 200.000 km on the clock with no problems whatsoever and only once had to exchange the clogged windshield washer pump for 60 €. Fuel consumption is 5.2 Liter Diesel per 100km and the only complaint I have is that you cannot replace the Rubber pads on the steering wheel. Drive it fast and each day and it rewards you.. Will definitely get the new 3 series. Best car I ever bought

Thanks for the good detailed video. I have a BMW 320i - 2012 (luxury line). Had a problem with the horn on (aprox. 10,000 KM) tail light broken as you mentioned, and it was not fixable, I had to buy a new one (aprox. 12,000 KM). I had a failure in the Electronic circuit (aprox 37,000 KM) changing it could have cost me 5,000$ but BMW covered it although my warranty was done by that time. Had a problem with the breaking system (aprox. 58,000 KM) but fortunately it only took a reprogramming procedure to fix it. Front shield rubber frame, corrosion all over it. It started appearing around (aprox. 50,000 KM). Door internal handles, (the ones covered with the wood trim from the front side) the plastic back side of them are sticky and falling apart (started appearing approx. 10,000 KM). Mind you, I take good care of my cars, and I'm still fixing it at the BMW Garage, but whatever I do, this car is always giving me a hard time. But will be selling it soon, it's a pain...

I own a low mileage car 2016 F31 320d 34000 miles. Had it since it was 11 months old. Never had any issues of any kind . Oil changed every 5000 miles even though BMW say its not due. Driven carefully and not thrashed. Just replaced the entire brake system as a matter of course with discs/ pads all around. Best car i have ever owned. Mainly does an 18 mile round trip down a motorway and gives me up 60mpg. Super cheap to run on servicing, insurance and road tax. I think most of the problems with these cars is trying to find well cared for examples which haven't been thrashed down the outside lane and left outside in all weathers. I recommend the F31 tourer model over the F30 saloon for practicality.

My 2013 F30 335i xdrive has had a couple notable unrelated issues @ 5 yrs, 65k miles: (1) plugged heater core - don't believe BMW when they say antifreeze is now a "lifetime fluid" which you "never have to replace" (same fluid in my former 2004 E46 was recommended by BMW for replacement). (2) overheated eccentric shaft (aka cam shaft). oil never ran low and never driven hard yet a core engine component overheated, lost temper, and was wearing. Replacement together estimated at $7k+. If you're looking at one, check computer codes and check that coolant has actually been replaced well before 50k miles.

E46 is a ugly piece of shit compared to the F30... What is good about the older BMW`s tho is that they r more reliable, with the E90 and up BMW started using plastic parts (for example the waterpump) instead of metal. Thats only because they want the cars to fail at some time so they can earn money... im looking at a 318i F30 and the only thing holding me back is the fact that BMW has started to use cheaper parts but selling them for the same price... The timing belt on the 1 series from like 2008 to 2011 is also a huge scandal, since that engine is still in newer BMW`s. BMW dont even cover the timing belt repair anymore...

This is the problem with many BMWs. The cars are a joy and the powertrains are solid, but they let you down in dumb easily fixable things like window regulators or sunroof seals

I have an M3 and my partner a 328i, they are both fun in their own way, but I would not advise anyone to buy BMW. They are both unreliable and maintenance costs for anyone who has owned say Toyota/Lexus are simply ridiculous. The 328i is going in to have its aluminium engine bolts replaced before all the gaskets completely fail and let coolant into the engine. Yes aluminium engine bolts. I suppose they could have used chewing gum instead to save even more weight, but that might have failed while it was still under warranty.

Only issue that i had with e90 was the clutch which failed after 70 000 km and unfortunately my car was written off in an accident. Now own the f30 2012 model bought it at 70 000 km now on 145000km no problems and it auto. But some minor issues are seat lever that tilts the seat can come off solution super clue, bonnet latch refuses to open when u pull it twice have to do trial and error to get it open. the most reliable is the BMW website, since they offer used cars even with guaranty. But they are a little bit more expensive than buying a BMW from outside of the dealer. Edit: the website he used in the video is called "mobile de", also look for dealers who are speciallized for bmw, for example "Riller&Schnauk" in Germany, its a little bit more expensive than on the free market tho.

Yup everybody said so. But, it always depends what used BMW's you got, people owning BMW's like to drive them to the max, but Toyota are driven in a different fashion, more normal, let's face it they are quite boring but dependable. I had 3 used BMW, i was very careful when buying them, took good care of them, oil change and filters every 10000 km and had no major issue with them.

Lol, When i bought this car My father was so disappointed, I leased a Jeep Cherokee before this and a Lexus before that and a Owned a Mazda before that. We have an X5 2007 in the family a Toyota Sienna 2014 and now my F30. Let me tell you the X5 that we still own gave THE MOST PROBLEMS BY FAR. The lexus only gave like a wheel senor issue and temperature sensor (covered under the lease). The Jeep gave noise issues, but nothing mechanical. The BMW is honestly so much more luxurious to drive especially when you get all the packages. BUT they break so often and cost so much to fix. The Mazda did have some issues on such as a few leaks but so much cheaper to repair than a German car. I'll probably sell this in a year or 2 and start leasing german because out of lease coverage they will run me dry.
