Over the decades, BMW has never shied away from change, especially when it comes down to looks. The F30/F31 has grown in all dimensions compared to its predecessor. The styling is similar to previous generations with a sweeping bonnet, short front overhang, and long wheelbase. But is it worth owning? What kind of reliability or power capabilities will be in your hands? Today Alex sits down to talk about what it might be like to own an F30 BMW.

The dual circle headlights of the 2012-2015 were the absolute best headlight design that BMW has ever produced. When those angry eyes showed up in your rear view mirror you thought, “That’s a BMW coming up, I better move over”. They were so recognizable as BMW.

Just started financing for a 2015 335i m sport at 19, it’s fun and I love it when it’s actually working right, I do everything myself so it’s been pretty cheap to fix but if I wasn’t mechanically inclined I’d have been bankrupt within the first 2 months of owning it, I’ve had to do my oil filter housing gaskets, the transmission mechatronics, belt and tensioner and a crank seal as added relief because of the n55 failure that goes with the belt and crank, and lastly my oil pan gasket. In all it’s cost me around 700-800 give or take within the last 3 months of ownership and if I wasn’t doing it myself it would’ve been 5k+ at a shop. I wouldn’t recommend buying this car if you don’t have the money to support it or the ability to fix it yourself. I’d be putting out around 400whp if I wasn’t worried now about it not holding the beating I give it stock, regardless it’s a blast to drive stock but I will need more soon

@@SuperEman500 don’t do it. If you have to ask then no it’s out of your budget. I only say this because pre 2015 4 banger f30’s were susceptible to the oil chain tensioners guides and sprockets going bad due to “German engineering”. This causes either 5k in damages if you’re lucky, or completely grenading the engine. Not that it happens very often it is a somewhat rare occurrence however it was enough for BMW to lose a class action lawsuit over the matter. Stick to late 2014-2015 and up and they’re actually fantastic to own. Super reliable with the amazing ZF tranny to boot.

Also if you're getting it I would learn how to work on cars if you don't already know how. It is a very reliable car if you take care of it, but be prepared to do work on your own unless you want to pay BMW. The timing chains are susceptible to go, I know because mine started going and I am actually in the process of changing my timing chain myself right now. It's mineral grau with all black accents, the front splitter, carbon spoiler at the back, side skirts and diffuser (all original M performance). The ZF8 transmission is a dream and the car handles like a charm. In this setup it looks more aggressive than the new 3 series imho. The amount of torque can be a tad too much in the rain though, I mean if you're not really wanting to drift lol.
