Ha! Joobie literally settled on the cardboard piece! (づ ͡ ᗜ ͡ )づ So my parents have one of those and their cats never played with it. Even the extremely playful kitten didn't see any appeal, and she'll lose her mind over a frozen pea that's fallen to the floor. She played with it til it melted, then she started rubbing her face on it & cuddling it, then things got violent & she started to eat it. She eats everything! Idk why "Git it!" works on any animal, but she seemed encouraged and indeed ate the pea. (I know the pea was the important part of that story, lol.)

I've learned with my cat that if I get something for him, I need to assemble it, lay it out for him, and then...ignore it for the next several days. Eventually he'll show interest in it, but only if I'm not paying attention to it.

Joob's reaction really sold this project!!! I can relate. I've spent tens of dollars on cat toys, but my three prefer hair ties, Q-tips, and a broken plastic stick.

One of my cats absolutely loves milk jug rings. I won't see any for months then bam one shows up. Often in the bathtub where he loves to play with it while it's contained. Another favorite isn't just a hair tie but rather a broken hair tie. My friends cats discovered that this weekend & they love it too. If my cat sees me throw away a qtip he will go dumpster diving for it. Some times it just takes cats time to warm up to new things. They're creatures of habit & generally prefer things that have been around & smell like them. Also if they become bored of something just moving it can reignite their love of it. Or get them to like something. My friend moved a cat scratcher his cats didn't touch for nearly 2 years & now they love it. But in saying all that. One way to get them to like something is by spraying it with a catnip spray.

Ah same 😅. I made her a very pretty and comfy cat bed, but hasn't slept in it even once. She prefers her windowsill perches for daytime naps and our bed at night. Not that I'm complaining or anything, just feel a little disappointed 😅

I think you need to make her a special box with different cardboard textures to scratch on the sides and an optimal loafing spot on the bottom 😂 she sure loves boxes

As cat owners the fact you thought the end result of her expert opinion would be anything different than her picking the trash is just hilarious😂

@@alicianorris9352 the dowel isn't spinning, the pvc pipe is. If they want to lock it they need something to bind the pipe to the dowel

Cats typically need several days to a few weeks to become accustomed to a new toy/cat scratching post. She's likely not going to just start using it, but when she gets the urge to scratch, that's when you'll figure out which one is more suitable. I think yours will win in the end for many of the reasons you listed at the beginning. Cats like the resistance.

Terrain building uses a lot of corrugated cardboard as bases and frames. When you are layering like that, may I recommend wood glue. Spread, push quick. The glue will soak into both sheets and bind very quickly. It doesn't build up depth as much as hot glue. Also forms a stronger bond because it soaks through both materials.

Also when I made topo models for class we would laser cut the layers with the layer above it's outline scored in so it was easier to make sure they matched up perfectly

I think you’re right about some cats like joob liking it more stationary, but there also crazy cats like mine who I’m sure would be spinning it furiously as fast as he possibly could especially if there’s catnip involved. The option to lock it is a good idea lol.

Like y'all said, I think it would be better if there was a locking mechanism on the spinning so that you could make it stationary for scratches. Then, once one side is scratched enough, you could unlock it and rotate to a fresh, unscratched side.

Our kitty beasties are very sensitive to smells. I am pretty sure ours that loves all forms of paper and cardboard would reject this simply based on the smell from the hot glue. I think a different adhesive would have perhaps skewed the favor to yours on Joobie's part. Also, it may not have needed any adhesive, or very little, if you compressed it on the rod more.

The fact that Joob just sat on the cardboard for the entire judging has me cry laughing

I enjoy watching Evan and Katelyn struggle only because it shows a healthy and honest way to struggle while doing something without giving up or lashing out. As someone who grew up in a traumatic environment, I find their coping mechanisms and strategies for success inspiring. ❤

Same here. They model good behaviours! They also give me an idea of how better to deal with my partner's chaotic nature in a more positive way since I'm a perfectionist with compulsive tendencies.

I wonder if she'd eventually want to scratch the egg if you made it stationary. Sometimes cats take a while to get used to a new thing and then it's their new favorite thing forever! And then they randomly decide they don't care about anymore, because they are a cat.

Move the thing to a new area and that usually helps get them reinterested!

I actually got a little emotional when Joobie rejected the DIY - and I didn't even make it. But you just put so much care and hard work into it! (Also that buy is a travesty in terms of quality, to me you definitely deserve the win just for how much less flimsy yours is.)

Cats would rather play with the toys packaging then the $30 toy itself 😭

YES another (partially) woodworking project! Old school E&K vibes are immaculate, I've missed the big tools and Katelyn's soothing narration of each operation. Such a great throwback to my favorite era of OG videos 😁

I saw the hot glue and thought “huh I wonder if contact cement would have been easier, or even mod podge” and then it came out as an egg and honestly I think it adds some good diy vibes :)

From this video, I have learned that Joob is a well-behaved cat that doesn't go nuts unraveling entire rolls of toilet paper because it's fun to pull them and spin them and then lie down in the pile of paper afterwards. "Why does it spin"....not a question we need to ask in my house. ;___;

FYI A Laser Cutter is a pretty common tool at your local makerspace or library! So if you consider that a person could bring their cardboard to a free makerspace and get those cardboard circles laser cut, then the cost is still really low!

Did you make reusable chemical reaction glowsticks that you crack to glow repeatedly? Or blacklight/glow in the dark sticks that glow? I feel like those are two very different things, but mostly bc the thing I like about glowsticks is the cracking the glass rods. Lol.

The sound of Evan's "excitement" as Katelyn is shoving the PVC through the cardboard is very similar to the noise I made when giving birth to my first child 😂 The relaxation that comes "after" that is, not the actual pushing part 😅

I made a life size sculpture with cardboard and I agree, never again! Kills your blades so fast 😫

So, fun tip for cutting a cardboard sphere for next time! Cut a bunch of squares that will reach just over the side of the sphere that you want and adhere them together nice and tight. Adding the hole for the pipe is optional but probably a good idea for the next step. Once the minecraft pancake pile is dry...put it on a lathe. Mild speed, and just start shaping the sphere. Just a thought! I don't know if you guys have a lathe, but that would have been my idea if I was making a cardboard pancake stack and turning it into a sphere!

I think laser cutter is more accessible than a lathe lol. Also I don't thin cardboard can hold well to being machined on its thickness

I wonder if a hyper active cat would enjoy these more 🤔 sweet joobie seems more relaxed and i know she is a bit older so maybe a really young "crazy" cat would just love to go after these! I really like the DIY design and i think the fact that the catnip can fall into the layers is a bonus! Kind of like those treat balls that cats bat around until the treat falls out but with catnip!

One of my absolute favorite things about your channel is that I live in the same state as you guys, and when you mentioned the hail i thought "Oh yeah, that happened a few days ago!" Makes me feel like we're neighbors catching up on the weather❤😂

Joob would probably just go for a Ham on a rotisserie as her first choice if we are thinking about round spheres on rotating sticks but I’m sure she appreciated the effort of this cardboard masterpiece her paw-rents created❤️

It is 8 30 pm. I have been cooking since noon and have more to go. I have some slow time while the eggs cook. I click this video, and there is Evan, doing exactly what I won't let myself do till all meal prep is done!!!

The hardest thing about creating/shopping for a cat, is how likely it is for them to completely ignore it and instead go for the random garbage they found on the floor. One of my cats loves huts and caves to hide in and loves scratching things. I made him a little haunted house with scratching pads on it, but he refuses to acknowledge it. Instead, my other cat, who does not like to scratch and doesn’t even have front claws, has decided it is hers now 😂
