    Thank you for the honest interview. "I wish I could tell you it shaved an hour off my workflow... It didn't." This video showed me the highs and lows of this device in just 6 minutes. Kudos to the host for keeping it real and short! You just helped me save $300!

    With the rotate know, and for all dials and knobs, there are two modes - speed mode and accuracy mode. You seem to have yours set to speed mode. See the manual for the easy instructions as to how to set it to accuracy mode.

    You can use standard MIDI controllers to get the same experience at a fraction of the price, also its fully customizable to whatever app you use, it needs quite a bit of tweaking though.

    Does anyone know technically how this works? Does Adobe publish an API for controlling Lightroom parameters, or does this thing somehow mimic key presses by hooking into the keyboard driver or sending something like a WM_KEYDOWN message to the OS? The reason that I ask is that I already have programmable MIDI controllers that I use for my soft-synths and I could write a program to use them with Lightroom.

One problem though--I feel like in Lightroom I'm always using the 'alt' key with the blacks and whites, masking for sharpening, and so on. Rotary encoders are used rather than sliders as they are infinite. Price is comparable with entry level control surfaces for video colour grading, and higher end surfaces are many thousands of USD. BCF2000 is a great midi panel and if that can be used it's worth a shot. Loupe deck are currently mishandling VAT on EU B2B sales via shopify so beware of that.

    It's interesting and I wish the inventors luck As the commentary below shows it's hard for many to GROK that limited run, custom purpose, V1 hardware cannot be cost compared with a standard keyboard that is made in the millions. That, not the technology, will be the creators main issue I suspect but I hope enough early adopters jump on board to allow them to get the benefits of scale.

    Honest review, If you think this will speed up your editing, the learning curve and motion memory you have to relearn will slow you down for a month, depending on how many photos your edit through this. I edited a good 1000 pictures and learned the board were I don't need to look at it to understand which dial am turning. Beware you will get frustrated and want to return it. I actually processed the return and ended up canceling the return after the frustration period is over. I still returned it tho as it was a great idea, but not worth the cost. Same result with a cheap $50 midi board too. Cheaper feel make for less enjoyment of editing photos.

    As some other pointed out ... there is free software ( MIDI2LR ) and with $50 you can get a Midi Controller like X-Touch Mini and get the same thing - actually better, cause you can choose your workflow. Btw - if you work with presets (which with Midi2LR you can map to any button) you can get very fast. I cut my edit time by almost 50% - even for travel photography which has quite some variety.

    Lol all these people complaining that it's $300. If you're a professional photographer that's less than the cost of one shoot. If you take your work seriously this is more than worth it. My time is my most valuable thing. If this saves me 20 hours over the course of a year it's paid for itself multiple times over.

  • @JonRowlison

    Is it REALLY an "analog" tool if the dials are all set to integer-value changes? Now... if it would wisely scale down to +/- .1 or .01 or .001 based on how slowly you turn it (or something) then you'd have more granular control so that it felt more like analog.

    They should compress/rearrange the distribution of buttons and sliders and add a keyboard layout below, all in a way that combines the Loopdeck and a keyboard into something you can replace both with. It'll make it the #1 item to get for every Lightroom user.

    Hmm as a amateur photographer I just can't justify such a price for such a niche product. Perhaps it will appeal to e.g. wedding photographers who mostly do minor corrections on a bunch load of pictures. Do you think it's likely we soon find a Chinese knock-off for 1/6th of the price? Thanks for reviewing! ps. If you are concerned with ergonomics and can type blindly (which, as former software developer, you surely can!), it is actually better to leave your keyboard feet flat, as the raised angle puts more stress on your wrists. See them as a vestigial organ from the typewriter times (=>i.e. the keyboard's coccyx)

    Hi! 1:40: Rotate/Crop works at 0,8° accuracy but while FN is pressed down, it will turn with 0,05° increments - I bet that is just what you were hoping for :) 2:20: About workflow speed. If you are a super pro and have really fine tuned workflow, Loupedeck will not speed it up tremendously (shouldn't slow you down either). But if you are not a super-pro, it will be a killer. Rating process will be faster. Using presets will be faster, you can adjust multiple adjustments at the same time, no more snipering the small sliders with your mouse, or searching through the panels x) 2:45: We have thought of ergonomics while designing Loupedeck; One key feature is, that Loupedeck divides the workload for two hands (instead of one) - so it really should be more relaxed tool to use (no clinical tests have been done though). 3:23: Loupedeck will not replace mouse totally. Some tools are faster to adjust with mouse, so we haven't integrated those functions into the deck at all - that would be a waste of users time :( But mouse fits neatly right besides Loupedeck - keyboard is something my desk is missing while editing. 4:40: I too hate the location where DeHaze has been added x) Thanks for the quick review! There are much more functions and customizing coming up later this year! - Karo / Loupedeck

    Karo Holmberg Price is crazy - especially for us non-super-pros lol I'll wait for updates and cheaper options/versions. Maybe something like a small control panel just for the color sliders, I'd love to have something like that - color adjustments are what I see this time of product being best for, in my workflow any way

  • @TheCaro2

    @TheCaro2

    7 жыл бұрын

    Zanna: It is a lot of money, yes, but compared to what you get it is not crazy. Other dedicated "color mixer consoles" that are approximately in the same category cost even more than loupedeck: - PFixer XTremist Bundle (379$) (includes the program+console) - Pallette Geat Expert (which has less functions) (499$) (i think its something like 800$ if you want the same amount of knobs/sliders/buttons what loupedeck has). You could buy just a midi-console and run it with Midi2LR: - Behringer X-Touch extended: 300$ (same price) or in Europe 422€ (~50€'s over Loupedeck) - Behringer X-Touch mini 50$ (70€ in europe) But those are not erconomically designed for lightroom. They are not good to use, and their build quality is far behind. That cheap X-Touch mini for example has knobs that wobble like trees in the wind and are even _unturnable_ if you push them sideways and try to rotate them. Describing the quality of that product is something I wouldn't do if there are children around - so, they are not really comparable at all. Give a loupedeck a try (if possible), test it out, and then make your decision about it :) PS. Comparable dj-mixers are in the same price category - so the price, although it is a lot of money, is really in line.

  • @TravisNutley

    @TravisNutley

    With all due respect, and I appreciate you mentioning other alternatives, the X-Touch mini description is pretty far off. Mine's been incredibly stable and solid. I've had no issue at all with the knobs after several months of use.

  • @TheCaro2

    @TheCaro2

    7 жыл бұрын

    I have been using audio mixers (escpecially dj-mixers) for over 20 years. I have some kind of perspective what does good knob feel like. Behringer has always been one of the worst. Try it out yourself, basic trick to check out if the knobs are of any quality: Push your X-Touch Minis knob to the left or right just the amount that it moves and then turn it - doesn't it feel like stuck? If you use a bit more force pushing it to the side, it just won't move at all. The only thing that feels good in X-Touch Mini is the slider. But I bet that if that slider is taken to a real use (like used all the time a lot) it will worn out in a year or two - that is how behringer makes things (I have "burned" three different behringers dj-mixers in use - the only behringers that are still alive, are two eurodesk mixers and they haven't been used for 15 years). Believe me, you just can't get quality stuff with under couple of hundred. And if you have more sliders, rolls, knobs and buttons - the price will go up.

    I shoot a lot of set photography and I can shoot up to 3000-5000 RAW images a day. So something like this or the Palette system. I will have to try both and decide what I like best. Being able to qickley adjust the crop and straighten setting, exposure, next photo and star rating on the fly will save me a ton of time. I can sync the settings like color balance, contrast and sharpening to my desired preferences to my whole take so those settings I would not need any dials or sliders.

    Definitely needs software updates so you can adjust the increment changes with the dials. Also I don't like how the buttons sound when you press them, kinda seems flimsy or maybe I'm just used to cherry MX switches lol. Good concept but not for $300 USD. That would be like $500 in Australia lol and for that id rather buy a new lens

    Or you could use a midi controller with free Midi2lr software for exactly the same thing. Using a good mouse with a thumb trackball has yielded great results for RSI problems and editing speed for me and is still faster than having dedicated controller buttons. Although assigning a midi button to very specific functions such as 'make HDR/panorama' or 'copy/paste develop settings' does save time right clicking or menu diving. If you customised this controller to very specific often used functions it could be good but it's not cost effective compared to a budget midi controller.

    Seems like this would be far better suited as a low cost panel for color grading. If you're reading this Loupedeck, I'm thinking DaVinci Resolve.. ;-)

    For me the buttons on it feel a bit "cheap", also the scroll wheels. Also, my personal preference for the dials, I would have liked them to "give some feedback", like slight clicks when turned, so like if you know that you only want like +5 clarity, you just do 5 clicks on the dial, not loud ones, but just so you can feel what you're doing. That's just me though.

    I don't like using a mouse but I wish the Loupedeck were more flexible. I think my Wacom tablet is better for now.

    300 something is pretty decent. The Capture One 10 solution, Tangent Element, is 3K bucks.

    So how does it work? (assuming you did use Lightroom at least at some point) How do you replace the whole library module?

    I think that watch the dials instead continue watching the monitor SLOWS DOWN the workflow.

    300$ seems high....ergonomically it seems the colors should be lower on the panel and knobs on top because you have to reach over the knobs with the current setup......also the changes as you say need to be in smaller increments

    300 is kinda steep for only Lightroom. i use midi2lr plugin and use a Korg nanokontrol 2 midi controller. it's 60 bucks new and every button and knob are mappable.

    $100 is absolutely max I would pay something like this. Even then I think I would prefer mouse and keyboard for fuller functionality. Not to mention I'm way too lazy to learn new things. :D
