The trick to butterfly is the rhythm. Get that right and it flows almost naturally.

It look easy until u tried it LOL-
I’m not a professional swimmer and it took me 6 months of constant every day training to be able to do one lap of butterfly swimming and another 6 months just to be comfortable with it. It’s not easy but with practice you can do it.

I totally agree ! I can barely do 3-4 full strokes before exhausting myself let alone do a complete 25m lap. I learnt it 3 days ago.

Guys maybe you’re doing wrong technique hence more resistance more energy. First practice kicking.. practice more and more dolphin kick. After that engage hand.. do as slow as possible…

He's a pitty swimmer. Look at the video , he's not getting out his head above water. In butterfly swiming method you have to get half of the chest above water. He\s a mermaid :))))

Don't be afraid of this swim stroke. I swam competitively in my younger days, but never performed the butterfly stroke till a couple weeks ago. I watched a couple videos and I didn't know how I was doing, but someone at the pool last night said :did you use to swim competitively?" I asked why he asked and he said my butterfly stroke looked good! Now at 45, I'm swimming for my workouts vs weights and love it. Feel so much better, but love the butterfly stroke! It's such a workout!!!

Yes, even as a casual swimmer, I feel the workout part, haha... I also feel the improvement after weight/resistance training in the gym
I only respectfully disagree with breathing rules. For longer distances, breathing every stroke is required. For a short sprint, hypoxic breathing patterns are fine. Most coaches are traditionalists and demand every-other-stroke for breathing. Phelps and all other professionals tend to breathe every stroke. I'll trust the pro's.
@wloonie
2 жыл бұрын
It's not really breathing every stroke but entire Phelps's technique whice makes it plausible for him to breathe every stroke. He kicks both up and down, swims in the flat position and pulls with much flatter forearms. Therefore his recovery takes much less time, which he can use to breathe more without too much cost.

The pros are using a lot more oxygen then you and almost every muscle in body , if you’re a recreational swimmer every other stroke is probably best
@file4318

Breathing every stroke is only good for a max 200. In a max 50 you should basically not be breathing, in a 100 you want to breathe about every two for a good balance between speed and oxygen. In very long distances (800+) breathing every 2 saves energy.

@@file4318 damn turning your body to breathe on every 2nd stroke seems like a lot of work
need a lot of energy for this

I noticed the slower style butterfly is doable with practice. Not for competitive swimming but if you google the Shaw butterfly there are 3 parts that explain it. I was able in couple weeks to do a decent butterfly.

To optimize your approach to mastering the butterfly stroke, focusing on one aspect at a time is very important. Initially, concentrate on mastering the body positioning, specifically the body undulation, as it is the foundation of the stroke. Once you grasp this element, move on to incorporating the arm movement, ensuring that both arms are moving in unison. The timing of the leg kick also plays a crucial role in the propulsion of the stroke. A common mistake is to kick too early or too late, so pay attention to the timing and make necessary adjustments. Incorporating a kickboard can also be beneficial as it allows you to independently focus on the leg kick. Finally, could you combine all the elements and practice the full stroke? It's important to remember to maintain a consistent rhythm and coordination with all stroke components. Incorporating a snorkel can aid in the breathing aspect of the stroke, allowing you to focus on the other elements without added strain, as taking a breath is the hardest part (at least for me). It is essential to be patient with yourself and to keep going even if progress seems slow. Remember that mastering the butterfly stroke is a process. You will eventually achieve your goal with consistent practice and attention to detail.
And he looks so awesome doing that butterfly technique! A pro!

I'm amazed the speedo brand don't focus more on breathing when talking about technique. Breathing is essential in swimming, so to have a video where the guy seldom takes a breath is not a good example.

How to breath in butterfly swimming technique?
Beautiful! Technique! Bravo. Is this total Immersion ? Will watch again and again . Thankyou ! EiLEEN
so cool
I was mainly swimming in the 25 meter pool with decent butterfly technique. Did 2 laps without stop. Got transferred to the 50 meter pool and it just kills me to do one lap of butterfly. Need to rest a minute after each lap. Tried to do one lap butterfly and then, without stop, another lap freestyle to go back to the start point, but man, it`s just brutal. I guess I need to adjust and get used to the 50 meter nonstop drills
Nice 😊
Good back workout
I’ve been trying to perfect this stroke…out of curiosity…should there be a lot of splashing? Arms out at the front and flicking legs back?
This helps me a lot. I’m a professional swimmer, and I have been trying to learn this. This video helped me a lot to master it. THANKS!
@Eve Beer this video is right because i train for team gb and ur hands turn so that if they were flat they would splash down and catch the water but when you turn your hands it makes u bring ur hands through the water quicker

I really just need to get my endurance up because my 50 fly is a 25 but then my 100 is a 59
It's all about constant practice. You can watch as many videos as these but without practice, you'll never do it correctly.
The arm stroke is more about the strenght in your upper body, there is no technical difficulty. Things get complicated with the waist and leg movement. If done incorrectly it slows you down immensely. Wonder how can I do that movement??
When to do leg kick?
Nice
This stroke is so beautiful... but I can’t do it. I got disqualified for bringing my arms up too high once, and I was the only one who signed up for that particular race. 😞

What is meant by keeping your hands inside of your body line on the pull?
@0Slartibartfast0
9 жыл бұрын
Your body line is the shape of your body from head to toe, seen from the front or back. If still not clear, then look at your life size shadow. Keeping your hands inside of body line is staying within the bounds of the your body as if outlined by your "shadow".

Yes,with practice you can go as slow as you like except you have to snap your kicks and your underwater pull should still be fast the recovery can be slow and you can glide before catching for the pull

Today I swimed my first butterfly 25 meter. İt was amazing it really worth it people see you as michael phelps :D How to swim butterfly : my tips are watching hundred how to swim butterfly videos on youtube and try it every week😅
It’s easy
Not sure why, but I got it in one class only. She teach the mermaid leg movement first previously, and later the hands movement. 1,2,3 legs and hands up. Has to touch your sides after pulling down, before goes up. For me it is easy movement, but very out of breath. 38 years old when learning this.
Very hard
No because I got back into swim after like a 2 month break, and I screwed this up so much to the point that I was dying after a 25 easy. I knew I was doing something wrong.
is it hard? yes is it worth to do? absolutely, just do it
Err... What about the legs?
What type of speedo he is wearing?
But how to breathe?
I like doing the butterfly stroke but I can only do it at least 2 trys without fins. I do it better with fins lol
Although I was 13 but I won't give up
I have discovered new technique called jellyfish/octopus technique
I keep getting lower and lower when I do butterfly

It depends on the person. I am a swim instructor and I tell my kids wrist should be together, as mush as they can, with palms out. I 've seen this taught by USASwim coachs, but some teach it differently.

Eve Beer Well your coach could be wrong also. So which technique you'll prefer, your coach's or the man who is the greatest swimmer in olympics history? your choice. On a serious note yes, your coach is right if you wan't to just learn butterfly stroke as a beginner, but if you want to go faster doing that, you have to learn what Phelps does.

“relax motion” they said
It so rasyonel ı am proo
This video isnt complete.. withoutt talking about the timing of the two kicks per one stroke, the beginner has NO idea how to do this...lol. visually this video is awesome....That's about it...
