The butterfly is probably the most graceful and yet hardest techniques in swimming. It is swum on the chest with no rotation of the torso. Both arms move symmetrically over the water and is supported by a dolphin-like kick that, unlike any other kick movement, is initiated from the chest. The butterfly stroke is also a rhythmic stroke. The timing of the pull and kick is important and determines your flow.

Wonderful. The final part for me to understand was to initiate the chest press while the arms are still on water surface. Only then the hips can be prevented from sinking.

Butterfly is only to flex swimmer's stamina. In real world you either use freestyle or breast-stroke, even thought latter is somewhat inefficient.

I need to learn to swim this stroke. My niece has a shot of going to the Olympics with just this stroke alone, so, I want to support her and feel how it is to swim using that method.

It take atleast 1 month my swimming teacher's wife is a swimming champion and she said it took her a month I was learning it and I stopped for 3 days because of the weather and it lowered my stamina in butterfly swimming its very hard and it's not like any other swimming styles!

@@ZoeYenYenn Thanks for the reply. I need to get back into swimming, since I had a heart attack and it's been slow going to get back into shape. I usually just swim free style and breast stroke. The update to my niece is that she made it into the Olympics and got 25th and 15th on the butterfly in Tokyo. I'm just going to swim to get back into shape and get back into a better breathing capacity. Top priority is your health first. Good Luck.

@@ZoeYenYennit took me 3 weeks to learn it by my self ( while it took me a good 5 months to self-learn freestyle), analysing the video that my friend filming for me helped a lot. And the best advice is" just slow thing down", it's better to do just one movement correctly rather than trying to swim a whole pool length with bad technique. The kick is the foundation of the stroke so practice it first. It's easier to swim fly with your arm recover under water then progress to swim a few strokes without breathing. One arm butterfly is also a good drill.

The day I first tried to learn this stroke was just before my meet the next day. What worse is that the coach substituted me into the the 200im in place of my teammate. Safe to say that I was not prepared at all. I learned it while I was racing. Had to or else I'd DQ.

i believe its because you dont want your head that high out of the water during breathing as it could either slow you down or mess you up. when breathing in butterfly you dont want to lift your head too high as it can also make it harder to do the stroke. when im doing my swim team practice we are normally told this. though i could be wrong about it

90% of swimming teachers teach this wrong and they don't even know it. That doesn't help people trying to learn. It's interesting how she has her hands palm down on recovery instead of the traditional thumbs down. I teach both. Oh and thanks for mentioning the CHEST. So many know it all's bang on about just the hips but I'd argue the chest is first and therefore more important. Especially if you want an easier arm recovery.

It still totally confuses me that people have no trouble understanding that the dolphin kick comes from the upper body and goes to the feet, but some how think it goes the other direction when doing the flutter kick. Both kicks are a 'crack the whip' action. One uses a body wave, the dolphin kick. The other uses a spiral action, the flutter kick. Nothing else changes. For any land based sport that uses spiral motion, like golf, throwing a baseball, or a Karate punch, your feet have to be anchored on the ground, either by standing with feet spread apart, or stepping into the action. In the water there is NOTHING to anchor your feet on. The action starts at your feet, travels through your hips, to your shoulders, and out through your finger tips. Add to that the main arm action in swimming is pulling, not pushing. Your hips rotate as a unit. Your shoulders rotate independently in swimming, other than the 'windmill' style used by the men in the 50 meter sprint. WITHOUT exception, every single freestyle and back stroke swimmer, whose arm stroke and kick are properly linked, the pulling/low side arm will initiate the rotation just slightly before the down kick (freestyle) happens. You don't even need slow motion video to see this. This also holds true for the 50 meter sprint where the arms stay opposite of each other in the pull.
