Avi announced in May 2017 that he would be leaving for personal reasons (mental health and family obligations) and left after their summer tour. They hired Matt in October on a trial basis for the holiday season. The trial worked out and Matt became a permanent member early in 2018. That’s the only lineup change in PTX history, from 2011-present.

Scott can beatbox, but in the studio recordings they just layer Kevin's track. Scott also sings bass when Matt has lead, like on Hallelujah and Sound of Silence. Kevin has been doing some amazing solo with with a looper and I'm hopeful they will introduce this idea on their concert tour.

Y'all would probably like watching Kevin do Down. It's a solo that he does all the parts with the help of loops...it is amazing!

Outfits are a homage to BTS - but "Mitch looks like an '80's porn star" is possibly the funniest thing I have heard on a reaction video this year. Well played Sir!

Scott will cover the bass when needed, and I believe Matt will beatbox. I'm not saying that's what happened in this track, but they've done it before. Great reaction guys!

I heard Kevin has perfect Pitch, they make all the songs live-able they don't layer in the sense that the same member is singing two parts at the same time. Scott takes over bass when the bass singer is singing, they support each other

I'm sure you have noticed that Mitch will have a different look in almost every video. He's been called the human chameleon.

In an interview; Their sound engineer said that they stack multiple tracks per part in studio recordings. One of their songs had over 70 tracks

When Matt or Avi is doing a solo, Scott will take on the bass part.

Also, 98% of the time, the song you're watching them sing is not what you're hearing. It's just not possible to get a perfect take with great sound unless you're going for that empty room, acoustic feel. 100% of what you're hearing was pre-recorded. Within Acapella, layering a background vocal is acceptable, also enhancing the voice for effect, like adding an echo. These groups just want to keep that to a minimum because then it's difficult to sing the song on tour.

👉👉GUYS! Scott takes over the bass when Avi or Matt have a singing lead!! Scott is also a baritone but hits AMAZING falsettos!!

Kevin has perfect pitch. It's not that uncommon for cello players. No frets.

Mitch is very close to pitch perfect also. But Kevin is the only one in the group with pitch perfect

@@kimberlymathewes Perfect pitch is something you not only need to work at but also something you have to innately possess. You are born with perfect pitch, but depending on whether or not you ever start studying music you may never know. Mitch doesn't have perfect pitch, he has what is called Relative Pitch, which is when you put the time into learning everything someone with Perfect Pitch learns, but will never quite be at the same level as someone with Perfect Pitch. It's not 100% proven that people with perfect pitch are born with it, as there have been studies that suggest that introducing people to the necessary information early on in life may help bring it to light, but there haven't been enough studies to really prove whether it's an attainable skill or if you just have to be lucky and be born with it. The major contributor to the theory that you're born with it is people later in life discovering that they have perfect pitch after beginning to learn music theory.

@@WeaselSpanzor I find it even more interesting that they are finding that people with perfect pitch lose it as they age. I've heard it can be a real struggle for the professional level musicians who then have to start learning relative pitch at such a late stage in their careers.

Seconding this. It's a very splashy, fun story-telling video, different from the usual PTX simple, "emphasis on the vocalists" look.

Kevin, the beatboxer has perfect pitch and does an amazing job with the beat. Matt, the new bass, is also amazing. Scott covers the bass when Matt or Avi sing. Thank you for your reaction.

When Kevin is singing Scott does the drum beats, the percussion tends to be a lot less complicated when someone other than Kevin is doing it. Rarely do you hear some sick, crazy beatboxing going on when Kevin is singing...that's for a reason. When Matt is singing Scott covers the Bass line....and with Matt and Scott sometimes you have to really pay attention to who's dong it, because their voices match up so well, the transition between them is seamless. You have to remember that they do these songs live on stage and never use any tracks or loops. They all have the ability to cover each others "thing". With the exception of Kirstie, she strictly sings, but like Scott and Mitch her range is ridiculous.

Scott does bass to cover for the actual bass when he's doing the solo. You guys are great!

PTX on the road - there are some good concert recordings. One of the best is Popspring 2016, which you can find as a very well-produced 4-song set video online (it has Avi). One piece of equipment they *do* need is their "in-ears," which allow them to hear each other without the distortion of the venue's acoustics. With you guys' background, you might enjoy the videos of their concert tours under #PTXperience. There are some actual shots of the concerts, but there's mostly rehearsals, choreo blocking and training, tech details, life on the road, fan interactions, and so on. ETA: the Popspring concert also has Mitch do a great rap in their original Can't Sleep Love, covering what rapper Tink did on the long album version of the song.

They're very big in the Asian Countries and makes sense they do Asian covers.

Recommend their Seasons Of Love as televised last 4th of July. Kirstin is terrific in this.

Worked as a Roadie for a rock band at one time and we moved a bunch of roll and pleated Kustom amps with big bottoms a Hammond B3 with Leslie and a drum kit. . . So I hear you about lugging equipment!!

Yes Avi left on really good terms. It was Avi 2011-2017 and it's been Matt since 2017. Avi's mum was sick and he couldn't take the intensity of PTX at the time. Plus he wanted to explore a solo career where he didn't just have to do a bass line all the time. His solo stuff is amazing. Apart from Avi they can all rap! On tracks, they layer it for beatboxing when Kevin takes a solo -- but when Matt takes a solo, Scott covers bass both on the track and live. You can actually see it in the video when Matt has a solo early on! I'm not sure how they handle beatbox layering live -- sometimes Mitch will cover if it's a simple percussion section, but obviously he can't do everything Kevin can.

This is such a fun mashup!! So glad you guys reacted to it. As many have pointed out already, the current bass singer is Matt. For new reactors to PTX like yourself, it’s completely understandable to refer to him as new, but after so long, fans need to relent to the fact that Matt is the current bass/ THE BASS MAN for PTX. 😆 Maybe one day people and fans alike will stop calling him “the new guy.” I mean, he’s not really new anymore. Avi was the first bass. Matt is the current bass. The rest is history…. 😁

just letting you know, that all PTX have some familiarity with beat boxing, to make that drum sound, so that if Kevin is singing someone can take over, mostly Max, the bass, or Scott the blonde guy. If you watch some behind the scenes of tour, you can see them do some of their own beat boxing that is not Kevin.

Kevin has perfect pitch... the rest have fabulous relative pitch. Oh, and Avi actually blew out speakers on tours! There’s a video where he did it! The rap section, rumor has it Mitch did some beat boxing; Scott does bass when Matt solos!

2011 - 2017 videos all have Avi Kaplan. Avi left for family issues. From Christmas 2017 to now, Matt Sallee is the bass.

Others have said it but... PTX is pretty incredible and can all pretty much cover each other's things... They all definitely have their strengths and what they excel at but Scott covers bass so well... Scott and Mitch can rap even better than KO and Matt (Mitch is probably the best- watch his short videos/tik toks). Mitch can beatbox and even Scott.... they all just arrange things smartly to their best abilities so they can also reproduce in live performances... You really should watch their journey on the Sing Off!!!

Voices and movements do a great job on two BTS pieces: Dynamite, Butter. Terrific covers in the Pentatonix way. Suggestion, try BTS versions.

So, not checking comments.... because that's too much work tbh.... But this is a cover of two of BTS' English songs: Dynamite, which came out in 2020 and Butter, which came out in 2021 I would love to see you guys react to BTS in the future! Though, most of their songs are in Korean, as they are a Korean group, but the songs themselves have deep and meaningful lyrics. Their live performances are incredible too and they always sing live with choreography.

It's only two songs, so more of a mash-up than a medley which typically involves 3 or more songs.

Another great review, Matt, even if your temporary partner thinks he's a great thespian (Doobie or not Doobie; that is the question.) Anyway, you mentioned the great benefit of a cappella groups being that they can perform anytime, anywhere due to no need for equipment or instruments. A great example of this is a video of an off the cuff request from a fan in an airport in 2012 when Pentatonix were waiting for a flight. The performance was totally unplanned, live, with absolutely no effects added. The song was Beyonce's Sweet Dreams, and the link is kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y42em497aMvVZaw.html. It's really worth a watch. In fact, there's another video of them singing "Thrift Shop" over the intercom system at the same airport.

There's a video of a TMZ cameraman challenging them in the street and them dropping everything and singing, too. Since it's a TMZ thing, we don't get to see the whole song and we have to listen to the TMZ studio banter (complimentary!) but I found that one pretty funny, too. The airport one was cool because it was a Trio arrangement from pre-PTX and Kevin and Avi adlibbed their parts on the fly.

Crazy choreos while singing? Please check out BTS. Amazing and meaningful lyrics, insane choreos and great Vocals/Rap. You can start by listening to 'butter' or 'dynamite' but fair warning; that's 2 of their most poppy songs and only ones entirely in English (permission to dance, is the only other one) the rest is in Korean with bits of English mixed up. If interested, I'd suggest the songs 'Black Swan', 'Fake love', 'ON', 'Outro: Tear'.

I don't want to ruin anything, but they do add a little post to get those mic cutoffs so sharp. But even when they sing live they're pretty much on point. It's just that the produced version practically sucks the sound back out of your ears when it cuts off.
