Busting Skincare Myths With Paula Begoun

I sat down to chat with Paula's Choice founder Paula Begoun to talk all things skin, skin care, skin mistakes and myths - everything you wanted to know about using vitamin C and Niacinamide and retinol and antioxidants ... we could have talked for hours so I am sorry this is 16 minutes long (but she's worth it).
Things to learn - why she never uses scent on her skin, why she never uses a cream moisturiser, and what she never leaves the house without putting on.
ENJOY
Here regime consists of
Niacinamide 10% Booster
CBoost 15 and Antioxidant Serum - all can be found here obviously

I've been using her stuff since she created it. I was even a test marketer for her products. Only thing I've washed my face with since. I do highly recommend her products. I'm 54 and people think I'm 35 or less all the time. Trust her.

Debbie Absolutely! I didn't know Paula, just her product range. But she seems like a no BS woman. I could listen to the two for hours. I only wondered about the air tight containetrs as some of the products shown seemed like pipette dispensed serums...

mnk tfn yes - some Paula's Choice products are in pipettes dispenser systems which is simply down to the products being liquid. But Paula's bottles and droppers have an interesting stopper in the top that drastically cuts down the size of the mouth of the bottle, thereby cutting down exposure to air.

I bought 4 2% bha toners at the Nordstrom sale last week! YAY! I transfer it to a spray bottle and spritz it on face, neck and chest 2x/day. Everything I know about skin, I learned from Paula! I was one of the first Paula's Choice customers 25 years ago and still use a lot of her products. If I'm ever tempted to try another product line, I ask myself "what would Paula say?"

Your vids helped a lot. I now have a skin care routine for normal/combo skin finally! 1. Your good skin cleanser 2. Your good skin pore minimising toner 2.1 sometimes a Korean sheet mask 3. Viola vitamin c 20% serum with hyleronic acid 4. Innisfree orchid moisturiser 5. I'm guilty of not wearing sunscreen but I try to when it's sunny. Ahhhh! Girl crush! I've ALSO been following Paula's advice for, wow, over 15 yrs, after buying and reading her Beauty Bible. Its still on my bookshelf and has been my go-to reference. Thanks to Paula, I've known to use unperfumed products, that VitC products are light and air sensitive and shouldn't be coloured - or in clear bottles! To ask myself "Why does this "Wonder Product" contain alcohol, peppermint, lemon, orange or lavender? That fingers in jars is BAD, that AHA'S rock and scrubs suck. About suncreens. How to read an ingredients list. pH levels for ingredient efficacy.... Just so much! Just discovered your channel a couple of days ago. Thank god its the w/end and my fella's away fishing - I get to binge watch your videos! Lol! Peggy Oberlander I have rosacea and have used Paula's products for 9 years with great success. It really comes down to whether your skin is dry or oily and what textures you prefer. You would want to use a mineral sunscreen and not a chemical sunscreen simply to avoid the potential irritation. Otherwise, it takes experimenting. Also, do look into IPL treatment if you haven't already, it is a seriously underrated treatment for rosacea.

Peggy, My sister has rosacea and has used Paula's line for years. She likes the Resist Optimal Results Hydrating Cleanser. I like the Moisture Boost Cleanser. Both are creamy, rinse off cleansers. My favourite toner is the Skin Recovery Toner. It's very gentle for dry skin. There are several toners in the Paula's Choice line that are suitable for someone with rosacea. It just depends on your skin and your personal preference. Everyone's skin is different, so you MAY have to try a few different products to find the one that works best for you. That's how I've found my favourites, by experimenting as lol365 said!

Loved this video! Paula's Choice products are amazing, the 2% BHA has been a staple in my skin care routine for over 5 years ad keeps my skin clear and awesome! Go Paula! :)

I'm a huge fan of Paula's Choice and loved this video. There have been some products, however, that Paula (and her Beautypedia site) have rated poorly, that other skincare gurus (like you) recommend. Pixi Glow Tonic is a recent example. I'd love your thoughts on how you feel about products that might be challenging in this way (i.e., you love them but other skincare gurus advise against them). Conflicting info from gurus I trust is always a challenge! Thanks again for making such a wonderful suite of videos.

I think you trust what your skin says to you - I don't use Pixi Glow because I don't like scented skin care and I say this on my video about it - but I know others love it and I recommend products that I might not use because others with different skin types love them. I will always prefer unscented skincare on my face (not such a stickler on my body unlike Paula) ... but opinions vary depending on your training and background. I am great mates with Caroline but we don't always agree on things. So if you try it and it works for you then go for it. For me I like unscented active ingredients led skincare, with no oils ... but if you have dry skin then your needs are different and if you believe in aromatherapy then you beliefs are different again. I tend to think more like a dermatologist than a facialist X

Thank soooooooooooooo much for this interview. Paula had me at "Lavender". I swear to gawd. My husband and I were in France at his mother's cottage outside of Marseilles and I picked up body lotion with "PURE" lavender. The next day my body looked like a human ant hill. I'm not kidding. I had bumps all over and I was red and it was just horrific. My body had a bad reaction. Lavender is great for getting laundry smelling nice. And the scent is very nice but it isn't necessarily the best ingredient to put in a body lotion. Excuse me now, whilst I go to become more familiar with Paula's Choice!

Loved this so much! I'm a big skincare junky and no matter what I always end up going back to Paula's products. You just can't go wrong with the prices of her products. And they work! I recently ordered the new skin perfecting 8% AHA lotion and I'm hoping it's a pretty good dupe for good genes. Fingers crossed!

New subscriber and hoping I don't hear the word derma rolling...why are a lot of You Tubers who have no cosmetic degrees are promoting poking pin holes in their face to regenerate cells, would a dermatologist say go ahead poke...And yeah to Paula rubbing your face with scrubbers. I'm 73 admit to coconut oil, vitamin c, jojoba tried....maybe I should combine them and drink it down. Looking forward to seeing more of your channel...

Nadine, is there any chance you could talk about witch hazel (if you haven't already done so previously)? I've read many different reviews and opinions on the product - that it helps reduce blemishes, is great as a toner, etc. I would love to hear your take on it, as you are my beauty guru after all!

You can try an alcohol-free one, Dickinson's makes a Hydrating Witch Hazel (with hyaluronic acid). Witch hazel is good for the skin.

Hi! Paula said she puts on toner, then niacinamide, then Vitamin C. However, I read on The Ordinary website that you weren't to mix Niacinamide and Vitamin C because they conflict. Please explain. Thanks so much! Love your channel! 💋

Ramona Sattaur I was about to ask the same. I even wrote to Paula's Choice once asking about it, since their Retinol 1% also contains Vitamin C. They replied that it is ok. In regards to niacinamide and vit C together, I also read many blogs/brands saying not to layer together. Including The Ordinary.

You absolutely can mix them together. After cleansing, I use a PC toner straight from the bottle into my hand (I like that all over especially on my eyes as a thin layer of moisture and antioxidants). I then use a BHA followed by three drops of Paula's Vitamin C, three drops of Alpha Arbutin, and three drops of Niacinamide. I just mix them altogether and then use my serum (or sometimes add that to my puddle of actives if I'm in a rush) and finish with a retinol. Every day. For years. I do use some Ordinary products but there is some faffy nonsense on their site.

Was glad to see Paula after reading her books in the past. She throws the baby out with the bath water with organics and naturals. Yes I agree that essential oils may be irritating and problematic. But there's much to be found in organics, gluten-free and truly chemical-free. Also caution is necessary with each synthetic ingredient. And nano technology can pass through skin. All products are absorbed through skin.
