Bushcraft Day Camp - New Hatchet, Fire Making, Campfire Meal
Ойын-сауық
As the seasons shift from winter into spring, I enjoy a relaxing day in the wilderness of Alberta, Canada. During this trip I test out a new hatchet, make a small fire suitable for cooking, and make a delicious campfire meal.
I hope you enjoy, and thank you to everyone who watches.
If you have any questions or comments, please leave them below and I'll do my best to reply. Some questions are answered below in the FAQ.
Don't forget to give this video a thumbs up if you enjoy it, and if you want to be updated on new videos I post be sure to subscribe.
FAQ:
What hatchet am I using in this video?
The hatchet model is a Marbles 700DB. It's a tiny double-bit hatchet I recently purchased to experiment with. I will be using this hatchet quite a bit in the coming future, and after I have plenty of experience with it I will likely make a video discussing the benefits/disadvantages of the double-bit design.
What did I use to start my fire?
Flint and steel to strike sparks onto a piece of charred cotton cloth.
What meal did I make?
Honey garlic chicken on a bed of white rice. The honey garlic sauce was prepared prior to this trip.
What are my initial thoughts on the double-bit hatchet?
So far I am enjoying it. I can see many advantages to the double-bit design. It is quite tiny. The cutting edges are only 2 1/2" long and the hatchet only weights 1 1/2 lbs including the handle (so the head may only be 1 1/4 lbs). Only time will tell whether or not this will be a functional bushcraft/woodcraft tool, but I will be sure to keep you updated.

I always wonder if you have had any Sasquatch encounters you would be willing to relate.
Dude! You have to be one of the most skilled outdoorsman I have ever seen or watched. Using a double bitted hatchet to make feather sticks & then you start your fire with a less than normal size piece of char cloth....and that's not even counting the gourmet meal! Keep it going man!...you're one of the true ones. Love the videos! God bless!
I have never seen anyone make a steel and char cloth spark fire out of feather sticks. That is awesome young man!!!!!!!

That’s some wicked Shirley Temple curls you created with your new hatchet!!!!! That blade must have a wicked sharp edge!! Also, a very nice meal to boot!
Isn't it satisfying to watch that wood curl?
I hope that the change of seasons finds you and your family well, and in good health! You trimmed your beard. It doesn’t define you as a person. Your actions do that. Beard, no beard you seem like a straightforward person. The hatchet. It’s fun to switch up tools. This spring I’ll be using a deeply bearded hatchet, actually a ‘hawk for close work, and improve my carving skills. I enjoy watching you cook and hope you still have as much fun making and sharing your videos as we do watching them! Be well, and take good care.
What are you a chef? You always have delicious looking meals. Stay safe my friend, keep those videos coming so we have something to watch during these crazy times.
Hello from Oklahoma! Thanks for the great video! Seeing that double bit hatchet brought back a flood of memories. I have one I carried in a canoe back in the '70s in the boundary waters and Ontario. I dug it up, it says Marbles Hunters Axe No.9DB. It was very handy to have. I use it now at deer camp on occasion. Being in my 60's with a heart condition I don't get out as much. But I still go when I can. Remember do all you can when your young. That way when you get old and can't go, you have the memories to help you thru. Thanks again! God Bless! Oh by the way, I like the new look.
Gotta say I love that double bit . I remember I had one when I was young. And yes I miss my youth. LOL 😂
Pretty well rounded for such a young man
This is my favorite cooking channel.
I always preferred a double bit, myself. imo, it offers you more control over the ax than a single bit. More control = less effort and a quicker job. ;)
I've just realised, thanks to you of course, that small fire is suitable for cooking. Unfortunately, it does not work when there are six of you and it is cold. Everybody wants some warmth and the cook is burning. Great stuff. Thanks.

Solo camping, it depends on the menu and the gear. ;) I've brewed coffee over a fire the size of a tin can. Cooked a balanced meal over a fire smaller than a sheet of notebook paper. ;) As you say, when's there's six of you, you need a slightly larger fire. :D Generally speaking, you only need a fire as big around as the bottom of your pot/pan. ;) Another trick is to dig up the sod and create a firepit. Line it - including the bottom - with flat stones, if there are any about. When you're ready to pack up, put the fire out, replace the dirt and sod in the firepit, and no one will know you were ever there. ;)
Need to whittle down some bushcraft style chopsticks!
You are just too cool. Great video. Felt like I was right there with you. Thank you the escape. The perfect way to "social distance". Alone in the woods.

I really like your videos a lot. Great information on living in the woods. How did that new double bitted hatchet work out for you, I’m giving some serious thought to adding one to my kit. The make and model would be welcome information for me. Thanks for all you do and share with the bushcraft community 👍👍

Nice video, serene and appetizing. Thank you for posting.
You just now made me realize how useful double sided axes can be. I have never thought of using one and now I can see how people would. I always felt they were impractical but this video proves they aren't.
This guy is freaking amazing! Look forward to every video. Please keep em coming!
You are a great survivor from India

Could be the lack of beard! Joking aside, I think that it is just a part of KZread. All content similar to this (eg: excellent and completely inoffensive) that I have watched have had dislikes yet no one saying why. It’s just people trolling. Pay it no heed!
Watched this trying to get to sleep. So interesting it woke me up more and then I drifted off to your crackling fire. Thank you. Awesome!
I love your videos. I hope you continuing make videos
This is great. Love this.
Up watching your videos before bed, only to find myself extremely hungry! Great now I have to rummage thru the pantry because everyone else is asleep...
Great video! I own a Marbles double bit hatchet, and a Condor double bit axe, I am a big fan of double bits, keep up the good content!
Amazing place an a hearty meal 🥘 😊
Nessmuk hatchet. I like it!
Lunch looked very good. Ps. I like the trimming of the beard probably the wife’s idea.
My man really out here making Sesame Chicken in the woods 👏🏽🔥💯
THAT was impressive...
That feather stick is a thing of beauty 👍🏼😍loved the video!
Amazing clip!
Very enjoyable video...
Another great looking meal. Something great I love that you should try is, instead of honey garlic sauce, do an oyster sauce. Make it the exact same way and then add in some cashew nuts as well. You will thank me.

The food looks delicious! Amazing feather sticks! Very nice video! Thank you! 👍
I love the fact that your beard is its own celebrity and it garners so much attention! What can I say, you’re an amazing guy with an awesome beard! My guess is you cut it back for hygiene reasons during the Covid pandemic. If I’m right, do I win an all inclusive overnight stay in the New Cabin?! LAL

Haha thanks for watching! I trimmed it because it's easier to maintain when it's short, but I suppose being trimmed it has some hygienic advantages as well. Once I finish the log cabin you're more than welcome to come spend a night or two haha. Thanks again. Take care!
Currently rewatching your older videos for meal ideas 🤣

With cast iron, most people just give it a quick scrub and wait to really clean it when they get back. Not saying you cant do it, it's just a pain in the ass, because cast iron needs a fresh coat of oil on it. For everything else, bring some extra water if there isn't a natural water source. Put some water in the pan/pot, put it on the fire and boil it. when it cools down a bit, but still warm to the touch, pour some of the water out and add some soap. Lather up the soap, let it sit for a minute, then wipe it up, a couple of paper towels should work fine. Bring a sponge if you want but keep in mind you need to let it dry out or bring something you can put it in so it doesn't get other stuff wet.

Tip, DO NOT put the soap in the water and then boil it. Cooking soap, or burnt soap smells like ass!

hay im from in indonesia. ..i like your video. ..thks
Looking forward to hearing your opinion on that hatchet! When I go bushcrafting/hiking and on overnighters I like to bring a small axe (Gränsfors Mini), a folding saw (tajima) and a neck knife (wm1). When it is really dry and not too cold, like now, I leave the axe at home. I'm a bit weary of that two bit design - worried I'll cut myself!

Every bit of gear has it's pluses and minuses. It always comes to comfort levels and personal preferences. ;) e.g. I've often used a machete, instead of an ax. Mild weather, I've gone out with nothing but a pocketknife, a bit of string, and a wool blanket. During late spring, summertime, or early fall, in a deciduous forest, everything else you need is right there. ;)

The Knave So true! Choosing the (right?) tools to bring, and leaving the others at home, is part of the learning experience.
I enjoy the simplicity of your approach and kit in your vids, I have seen your new hatchet called a saddle axe, perhaps for easy carry by a single horseman
