In a look back at a past presidential debate, George H.W. Bush slammed Geraldine Ferraro over foreign policy. Director of Virginia Center for Politics Dr. Larry Sabato, author of "Landslide: LBJ and Ronald Reagan at the Dawn of New America" Jonathan Darman and presidential historian Doug Wead join CBSN to discuss.

You guys are condescending toward our first Bush. Shame. Shame.
'A bully' .... I am not a huge fan of the Bushes and yes he was a bit patronising but they would not be saying that if the opponent was a man.... so why the double standards?

The thing is if there was a man opposite bush his answer most probably would have been very different, he would almost certainly not have started his answer with "let me help you" this clearly implies that his opponent doesn't understand the situation, and man or woman this answer is condescending nonetheless but his particular response has an underlying tone of sexism
I bet their Debating That in Heaven R.I.P Bush 41 R.I.P Representative Ferraro
He schooled her.
These commenters have clearly no idea what the real world is like lol
the 1980's were surely a highly chaotic time with politics and national and certain world affairs. Up there with the 60's and 70's.
I'm a man and I can't tell you how many times I've had WOMEN say "let me help you with that" and then proceed to lecture me about something. Oh but God forbid you say it to a woman because then you're somehow a chauvinist, yet it's all well and fine when a woman says it to a man. Howwwwww convenient. Same old double standard at work . . .

@@MrTallformyheight A: My opinion. B: The truth. Those are two facts that happened as "I" know them. If you don't believe them that's YOUR problem. Deal with it.
It was Newt Gingrich's mother referring to Hillary with a word that rhymes with witch in what she was told was an off the record moment in an interview with Connie Chung, not Barbara Bush.

Thanks. Good to know. Duly noted.
The watch incident happened with Clinton. Bush checked his watch because he thought Clinton was taking extra time and not following the time rules. Had any of these commentators cared to discuss that fact they would be telling the truth. Ferraro was so inexperienced she was out of her league. One of the worst tickets in political history.

Love her hairstyle and glasses, though! Fashionable lady. And far more humble than Bush ever was. Or Reagan.
He didn't 'slam' anything ... At least not with that woman.

When did the Democrats play politics with kid gloves? A good dose of their own medicine they got, here. Political correctness counts only if you buy into it.

Is that why Mondale and Ferraro got creamed ? I felt Mondale was just not interesting and lacked charisma, and the country wasn’t ready for a woman VP

poor ferraro was destroyed :(

Mondale was too, 525-13 in the 1984 election .
They only showed one clip of the debate, but as I remember, Bush was repeatedly condescending and dismissive of his opponent in a way that seemed clearly sexist at the time. I wish they had showed more clips to make that point.

The whole debate is on utube.
The Bush's and all their fake terrrrah-ist cartoon characters. Good Lord!
