As has been said here, she was ahead of her time. Even though she and Mondale lost in a landslide, I think The effect of her running for Vice President was to open the doors for women in politics. I don't know, but I somewhat suspect that the gains in elective office that women have made over the past 30+ years can directly or indirectly be traced back to Geraldine Ferraro's legacy.

I was a young girl campaigning for the Mondale/Ferraro Ticket . The inspiration to watch Geraldine speak at a NYC rally was electrifying. It took until 2019 to realize a deep gratitude I have for Walter Mondale to pick her as a running mate. Geraldine was amazing but Walter Mondale was the visionary to know in the 1980's that women deserved that spotlight. To think the ME TOO movement took 30 PLUS years to happen . I hope of female understands this history.

@@RB01.10 No one would’ve beaten Reagan. There was a slight chance after the first debate when Ronnie seemed confused and like he didn’t know where he was. Nancy and his advisors made sure that wouldn’t happen again in debate number 2. He made the joke about his opponents “ youth and inexperience”, even Mondale laughed hard. Mondale himself knew at that moment the 1984 race was decided.

Eduardo Gavilanes There are quite a few reasons : 1. Reagan had charisma, which Mondale did not have. 2. The first couple of years in his first term, the economy wasn’t in the best shape, but rebounded. 3. At the Democratic Convention he said “Mr. Reagan will raise taxes, and so will I. He won’t tell you. I just did.” One of the worst political gaffes in history. 3. The US wasn’t ready for a woman in office and later on, controversy arose with Ferrero’s husband and his finances.

Actually it did matter. Just like Sarah Palin’s nomination was consequential even though Obama/Biden handily beat McCain/Palin. That’s because Ferraro’s nomination ushered in a new era of political achievements for women. I mean I get chills at 5:35 when you hear those people shouting her name. She may have lost, but it wasn’t in vain. In 1992, California became the first state to elect two female Senators to represent it, and both Feinstein and Boxer say they were insipired to run because of Ferraro in 1984, as well as the Clarence Thomas hearings in 92. Palin also inspired many women to run as members of the GOP.
