Bush Hog Anything

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is my overview of what a bush hog can do. I use my bush hog (sometimes called a "brush hog") to clear and mow a good portion of my 50 acres.
My video on sharpening my bush hog is here: • How to Sharpen Brush H... The tractor in my video is a 1967 Ford 3000: 3 cylinder, gas powered, and running strong.

    for those who don't know, Bush Hog is a trade name for a company that makes rough cut rotary mowers with that name on them. the name bush hog just caught on and is much like folks using trade names to cover other generic things such as skilsaw, sawzall, etc. in this region, such rough cut rotary mowers are generally referred to as a shredder, although some do say bush hog for the mower or the use of the same. the mower in this video does need to be adjusted, and i'd advise not running over rocks and stumps and such to avoid breaking either the driveshaft or the PTO shaft coming out of the case. last year, i saw a man break the top out of his gearbox on his mower when he hit a stump hidden in the tall grass. good luck

    I know you're new to tractors, but trying to start it without disengaging the PTO will eventually kill that starter. It will turn over much easier without the load of the implement. Also, like another commenter noted, it can be adjusted pretty easily to level out the deck and reduce the wear on it.

  • @metaspencer

    Oh, if only my PTO would fully disengage. It's been stuck on for a few years now ... and I've been meaning to get in there and try to adjust the lever/cable the is keeping it running. I'll have to get in there, as I didn't know it was bad for the engine. Thanks!

    Looks like your top link needs to be adjusted out alittle use your front lower link arms on the tractor and your tail wheel to set the height and it will cut alittle nicer also don't forget to check the oil in the gearbox it's very expensive to get another as tough as that woods brush hog you have! Nice job

  • @metaspencer

    @metaspencer

    7 жыл бұрын

    that's all good advice. it definitely needs some oil, and likely some grease. That darn top link is rusty, but it should loosen up with some grease

  • @Nortekj

    @Nortekj

    7 жыл бұрын

    I would remove the top link completely and replace it with a chain, if he ever crosses a ditch with it the way it is now he risks raising the rear tires off the ground and will be stranded. with a chain that will never happen as it will allow the implement to raise if a situation like that occurs. an also will allow the implement to somewhat follow the contour of the ground.

  • @metaspencer

    @metaspencer

    7 жыл бұрын

    A chain! I hadn't thought of that as an option, but it makes sense. I have to make some changes so will definitely think about that option. Thanks for the advice!

  • @Nortekj

    @Nortekj

    7 жыл бұрын

    I would make the chain long enough to allow the bush hog to sit level when it is roughly 5 inches above ground level, that way if you ever decide to run cattle the grass will still be long enough for them to graze. They wrap their tongues around the grass and then raise their heads so that their bottom teeth will cut it off, any shorter and they have problems in getting enough in a days time. plus with the implement at that height, will prevent a lot of large rock strikes by the spinning blades

  • @metaspencer

    could you thin out undergrowth around trees into the woods? If so, what is the biggest tree or brush you can cut? What kinda maneuverability in tight woods?

  • @metaspencer

    @metaspencer

    7 жыл бұрын

    I thin out weeds and high grass around trees all the time. As for maneuvering the tractor and bush hog, it needs some space to work as your cutting edge is behind the tractor. In my case, I use it easily around trees that are 10-20 feet apart. Trees that are 6' apart (and I have a lot of them) can be cut between, but it takes a few passes. Moving in slower/lower gears makes for more precise work. With all that said, I prefer a scythe or weed whacker for close tree work.

    Technically, you aren't supposed to cut your average grass with a brush mower. Most of them have more blunt blades than a typical riding mower, your average grass can get caught up fairly easy in these blades. Finish mowers are better for cutting a large area of grass.

    I've done it both ways -- but ideally I use the Husqvarna just around the house, up-and-down the driveway, and along our road. Everything else is mowed and cut back with the bush hog. The bush hog just makes SUCH faster work of things. Plus, nothing can beat driving that tractor! :)

    fun video for sure!! But cutter is not adjusted correctly,,,,rear is waaay too high and front is too low. Set it on a flat concrete drive way and adjust so that weight is shared between rear wheel and front lift arms, and level. Then drop front 1" lower than the rear, keeping load still on the rear wheels and skid bars at front about 1" from ground. That way your blade will cut material at the front but not drag on it at the rear, your skid bars will last longer as the will not be ground off as much with contact of the ground. And, weight carried by the rear wheel will take a load off the tractor and allow more stability for the cutter. I might add,,,cutting the upper support bar to allow a hinge there will let cutter follow ground better as tractor heads up a slope,,,or install a flexible chain to support the load and yet be tight when needed. Minor changes will make large, noticeable performance improvements.....more videos when you have time,,,thanks

I have a bee suit, from my bee keeping days, so plan to go back to that area this summer and dig out the hive. I'll make a video if I do that, as it'll likely be crazy. Those buggers will sure defend their hive!

    Holy Moley Metaspencer!! That's one heck of a task even for the bold & courageous (chuckle). Those lil demons mean business...ALL the time. Recommend do a night assault. I've been attacked 10 or more times and man, they tore me up and I can't run as fast as prior years. Go ahead, make the video but we'll truly understand why we only see a man hauling @$$ across a field while the tractor's running driver-less. (chuckle) Just be safe!

    I hit a ground nest last year here in Ocala Florida. I got stung 53 times !! Was just testing out the 6ft Hog, So wasn't dressed for mowing. Just had shorts and flip-flops on !!!. Talk about a bad day !!. Those SOB's wouldn't let go either !!. I was a Swatting and a running !!. Thank God I had a EpiPen in my Emergency Gear !!!. I got hit 2 times on my upper lip (looked like I got Botox !! Lol) and 3 times on my neck, The rest was on my legs , Back and Stomach/chest !!. It took me about 10 minutes to gather my thoughts and get up the nerve to go get my tractor, It's a Hydrostatic drive, So it stopped as soon as my fat butt bailed off !!. So I had to climb back on it while it was still next to the nest !!. Anyway, By the time I made it home, I was weezing and it was hard to breathe !!. Called the wife and told her what happened and loaded up with the EpiPen. It took about 15 minutes to start working good. But that 15 minutes was scary as Heck !! Thought I was gonna die. Had 911 dialed on my phone waiting in case I started to pass out !!!. Now I sweat Everytime I Mow a field !!. That was one painful and scary day !!. Now I wear heavy jeans and long sleeve and a full hood and hat and boots !! It's hot sometimes but it's better than 53 Yellow Jacket Stings !!!. And I'm outta Epipens !!!.

    Oh I wish that I could! My PTO spins (though less vigorously) even when the lever is shut off. I suppose that's something I should try to fix, though I'll have to read up a bit on how the shut-off works.

    your dealer sells a ratchet to install in the pto if needed. Id be sure to get the repairs needed if tractor end cant be stopped. There should be a brake in the pto line i think on that model, so that pto will stop..

    Just happened on to your video. I have never owned a tractor, but I am now in need. I would love to buy an older tractor for no other reason than cost, but the possible problems. repair costs and parts availability, scare me. How does a newbie figure out what's worth buying?

  • @metaspencer

    @metaspencer

    7 жыл бұрын

    That's a great question, and I had a lot of the same worries and concerns before buying mine. For me, there was the basic need (high) and then the likelihood that I'd ever be able to afford a new tractor (low) that led me to buy my old one. I'd suggest the basics when buying one: get the history (fewer owners are usually better), figure out how it's running, and then look it over for things like oil leaks and bad repair. Another thing to look for is if the tractor has been stored outside. In the end, it's important to remember that tractors are not all like cars in that they don't all get driven hundreds of thousands of miles, so they do tend to last many more decades. Oh, last bit of advice ... join some groups online and on FaceBook and folks there can give you advice if you find a tractor you want to buy

  • @oruwatching

    Thanks. I have found a new one that would sell for about $19,000. My thoughts are that if I bought a used one at $9,000, I could buy a lot of repair for $10,000. It just seems like there is a lot that can go wrong with all of those moving parts.

  • @metaspencer

    Yeah, if it's enough tractor for you and has the attachments you need, and if you can afford it, that new one sounds like it would be a safe bet.

    Nice video, looks just like my Woods mower (can't kill them), if you need to buy another get one 72" or 84" wide. I pull my 84" behind a MF135, and the mower is 12" wider than the tractor, you can get right next to fences with it so you don't have to do as much work with a trimmer. kzread.info/dash/bejne/faKKkrlylMbYpKQ.html
