You know what I found crazy in 1990´s " musical landscape " ? Mayhem live with Pelle and Hellhammer in late 1989/early 1990 playing " De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas " material already . Varg will never admit to this but he was highly galvanized by Arseth´s ( Pelle´s too ) views and musical vision .

He copied bands from South America like Sarcofago, Holocausto, bands from Asia like Sigh and Abhorer, VON...bands already had this sound since mid 80s You think that Mayhem was the first band w this sound and image...Burzum was the first band to put Norwegian BM on the map.

Even in black metal Xasthur has better atmospheric albums, and I don’t consider him an unparalelled musical genious. Someone like guthrie govan is an unparalelled musical genious because of his insane technical skill and ability to improvise some of the best fusionjazz solos ever.

@@okkokarsama1596 maybe it is an overstatement but with the example you give you seem to think of musical genius as someone very talented at playing their instrument but in my opinion that has little to do with it. All what matters is song writing. Is nirvana considered one of the best bands of the 90s cuz of Kurt’s great playing skills, or songwriting skills? That’s what Varg was above average at

When we talk about demo tapes from black metal bands like Burzum, we're talking about very rare materials that nowadays cost a lot, from what I understood in Euronymous' store you could find demo tapes, I don't know exactly if they have demo tapes from Burzum were sold in Helveti while the store was run by Euronymous, instead I know about the album Burzum Promo 92 which was produced in a few copies and is an extremely rare material that could be purchased from Øystein's store at that time time. The role of the album Promo 92 was to promote the first debut album from Burzum which was to be released in March of 1992.

I was the 666th like haha. Also it says it's from 91 but the cover appears to be of a church burning which would've been 92 or later, anyone know what's up with that?

Its all him. From what i remember reading a while back he would record each part separately and layer them cassette to cassette. Its one of the reasons why the audio is so low quality due to generational loss between the cassettes

To jest DEMO. I MIAŁO brzmieć chujowo. Dlatego można tego posłuchać na YT albo niegdyś z przegranej kasety, jak słuchałem ponad 20 lat temu, a nie płacić jakiemuś cwaniakowi za bootleg na płycie:) Ale historycznie to ciekawa rzecz.

that was the point of this demo. it was a reaction against the popular death metal of the time. he deliberately made it sound bad. and the people who understood, understood.

Bands like Master’s Hammer which had released their full length album by 1991, had better sound . I don’t think Burzum’s demo was innovative. I like the first album though - Burzum 1992 - but again I don’t think it had something new rather than burning churches 😅. Don’t get me wrong I like Burzum and also Mayhem but they got a lot of attention back then just because the crimes they committed. if We talk about musical vision they were far behind from being something original.

and you completely missed the point. Burzum, Darkthrone, Mayhem & Immortal DELIBERATELY sounded bad. they went out of their way to sound primitive, raw, ugly & unpopular. the entire point of the black metal movement was to roll back the clock, to take it back to 1983... the Hellhammer / Bathory era. it was a deliberate move from a bunch of musicians who were already able to play technical death metal (and had done so)

If you know the songs that are on this demo. They were later re-recorded. You can begin to really appreciate this demo. But yeah, coming from an outside perspective. I can easily see how this is unlistenable. It's definitely not the best representation for what burzum sounds like for a first time listener.

It sounds this way because the music and recording was shaped that way duh. You don't even have to like bm or even be a musician to understand it's the tone that he was going for. The soundscape is used to elicit certain feelings and capture a vibe.
