    Interesting review and glad to be able to engage (unlike your previous videos with comments off). I have the Burton SO system. The original version with Ion boots. I have also tried the Clew bindings as given a long term demo and the original flow bindings to compare (I'm guessing the predecessor to the nidecker bindings). Personally I like the Burton set up as did another friend of mine but has flow bindings and prefers them, though the issue with flow is that you need to tweek then for your boot etc which can take up a bit of time. My other friend preferred the Clew binding as he is a very aggressive carver but I hated them with a passion because...the rubber on the sole of the release part is very hard so up a poma or icy conditions they slide away. This is something I have never experienced with my step on boots. The riding experience on the Clew wasn't at all bad but just felt like a very old binding from the 90s or earlier that is heavy and not dynamic at all! There is no flex in them and coming from the likes of Salomon Shadowfit or the Burton Cartels they just feel dated! There is a video on my channel riding them side by side. But every opinion/review is subjective as what's for me and my style of riding might not be for everyone.

    Thanks for taking the time to write your take and share others. Comments should now be on for every review we have up. In depth Supramatic and Clew review coming. I agree about the feel/flex underfoot with Clew and to a similar extent the Supramatic. That will be addressed in depth in those reviews as well.

    As always, this review took the deep dive that so many reviewers just don’t do. It definitely helped me in going with the genesis stepons/first stepons, and the ions (but considering photons). However, I’ve noticed after clicking twice in the heel, the give of the cushion from the base of binding, the cleat has give / gap when I go from heel to toe. I can feel the click from the gap. Is this something you’ve noticed with the 2023 or even previous models? Ive seen some KZreadrs and Reddit takes on it, but I value the Good Ride’s perspective.

    Can you explain how there is less adjustability in them? I understand the lack of having a strap you can tighten but can't you just loosen your boot a little. Also how is the mounting on none burton boards with the plates on them. Every video I have seen is step ons mounted on burton channels. Can you not adjust the angle they are mounted at on non-channel boards? (I haven't bought gear since 2013 so I'm a little out of touch with this stuff) Thanks for the videos! They are also very informative.

  • @thegoodridesnow

    It's hard getting back into it with all this new tech and thanks for the good words. So if you click through the links to the reviews on the site and read what I wrote about adjustability it should break it down for you. The quick and dirty. Limited high back rotation. It isn't easy to center the boot in the binding and therefore the board. Outside of the channel system there is no stance width adjustabiltiy. You can't slide the bindings tip to tail. Also, check the Burton Genesis Step On Review thegoodride.com/snowboard-binding-reviews/burton-genesis-step-on-2023-snowboard-binding-review/ and the Burton Step On X review. thegoodride.com/snowboard-binding-reviews/burton-step-on-x-binding-2021-review/

    Went and tried on the store. I noticed that when the boot was in the binding, I had a little play between the boot and the binding. So far that I could feel the gap when moving the boot from heel to toe. Not that I felt the boot was going to go out but rather that there was a gap on the hold. Found it annoying and turn off, but wonder if the binding needed an adjustment that the store was not able to tell me. Is this something you noticed or was the particular binding I tried.

  • @thegoodridesnow

    I did not notice this with my testing this year on the Step On or Genesis Step On with Photon Step On boots. There are 2 clicks in. 1 for if you have snow on your foot bed and another for no snow. If you step 2 clicks in (takes a little more effort) there is zero play. It might be possible that you only stepped one click in.

    @@thegoodridesnow Think has to do with the boot’s size and the binding. Went back to the store and inspected the bindings closely. Same boots different sizes, the rear binding’s “gear” sits different, it is spring loaded to clip on the boot and depending on that there is a little wiggle room for the spring. Noticed that a different size didn’t have the wiggle but my size did. Same boot And bindings model just different sizes. I don’t think will make a difference on the ride but knowing it is there would drive me crazy.

    The weight on the Step On should be pointed WITH the boot, because it's a binary system. IMO... And those boots are not the lightest in the market... I still think the best are the Supermatic. You can use the boot you want, you can use them as regular straps bindings, and they have got more customization. Besides, they never talk about this, which was the main problem with step ins back in the day: If you like to hike, splitboarding, or to explore to ride the mountain, you caould damage the step on boot, and you are fkd. Not only that, but maybe the boot is damaged, but you didn't noticed it, still can step in, but in the middle of the run it releases and you can be really really hurt. That was the main problem with step ins back in the day. Ok, Step Ons are not metal, and those pieces are not in the sole, but still, I wouldn't use them to climb some rocks (also, you can't use crampons?...) . Let alone the cost of new boots, but that's the least important issue. The Step On are being sold really really well, but mostly for tourists, and older middle-low level riders. No disrespect, I understand the causes and why they prefer step ins, because I am an instructor and they are constantly asking me for a step in system, because for them, strap in is a battle, no matter how I insist that is not so hard and I even practice it with them a lot, while more experienced riders haven't got any issue to strap in, even in motion. Experienced riders want performance, not easy strap in/out, although I really think that step ins are the future (if we survive to the current madness). I've always believed it. To me, the best path right now are the Supermatic. The Clew look great too. I'd choose them before the Step On. Again, no hate here, just because of the reasons I've explained.

  • @thegoodridesnow

    @thegoodridesnow

    Жыл бұрын

    Great points and no hate felt. Just your take based on your observations, needs and preferences. Yes many riders that don't ride much just can't figure out how to stand up and strap in. Shit! I knew I was forgetting something when I published this review. The Photon Step On 2022 and 2023 are 2 lbs per foot so 3.8lbs total per foot. My Burton Kendo's and they are 2.2Lbs. I just looked at about 10 boots weight that I rode last year and they were 1.8lbs - 2.4lbs. So the Supramatic will be considerably heavier than most boot/binding combos. I'll add it to the written portion on the site. That being said it is not all about weight. Many other factors come into play when it comes to getting a quick release so each of these three brands could work depending on preference. Reviews coming next of the Supramatic and Clew.

  • @GLHNSLHT2

    @GLHNSLHT2

    Highly unlikely your going to damage the boot in the back country. The toe hooks are not that high of a profile to where you'd catch them on anything. And you'd probably have to be sliding down on your butt with your feet out in front of you to hit the heal cleats hard enough to break them off. You state experienced riders want performance. The step ons are more responsive than pretty much any other binding out there. Reviewers have noticed that since day 1. How is that not performance orientated? I love mine. I love the response. The ability to just step in is a bonus. And when your 4 or 5 chairs back on a powder day to be able to just ride off the chair past everyone else and grab those freshies just makes it all the better.
