    I just got the 22/23 Genesis Step On with those exact same photons paired with a Burton Process Camber. I’m loving this setup in Michigan with my young kids (4,7,8), learning to ski. The step on allows me to get in and out quickly to help my younger kids and keep up with my oldest who hops off the chair and it ready to rip. Also, being in Michigan with very short runs, its great to be able to get in and out easily. I still kept my traditional boots/bindings combo for my Custom X in case I get the urge to do something different.

    Great review. As someone who used the step on’s from 1999/2000 these are a game changer. And when you are 51, can’t really push yourself forward and fall regularly these are the way to go. It was really telling how many instructors I saw with these.

    Hi, I’m « only » 45 but I confirm your comment. Bought the genesis step on few days ago, for me it’s a game changer, as I’m not really athletic and slightly overweight I had rally difficulties to attach regulars bindings. Now it’s click and go. As mentioned in the video it’s true I find it a bit stiff probably because of the boots being attached to the binding on the back, but I believe it’s a habit to take. Other than that I felt absolutely no difference vs standard bindings, I think there is a bit too much over thinking on the feeling overall, these are great binding, click and go.

    Awesome review man. You did a really good job describing the difference in feel between straps. Really makes me want to try a set but I probably won’t get a chance unless I buy a whole setup, hard to justify. My first snowboard ever had a pair of K2 clicker/shimano steps ins back in the day. I loved just rolling off the lift and bombing runs as fast as I could. Makes me want to pickup a camber board again, I think a custom x and step ins would be a good bombing run setup. Does board stiffness change your recommendation at all for those bindings?

  • @thegoodridesnow

    @thegoodridesnow

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks! The First Cut and Step Ons would be a great bomber combo. Stiffness is one consideration but it is also sidecut depth/how a board initiates a turn and other factors when determining the kind of binding you should choose for the board.

  • @Claire_and_Spence
    @Claire_and_Spence Жыл бұрын

    if you loosen up your boot just a little, a lot of the stiffness of the original step ons goes away. Just think of your boot as the new binding because your binding is basically one with the boot since they are locked in together. hopefully that makes sense lol

  • @thegoodridesnow

    @thegoodridesnow

    Жыл бұрын

    I'm glad you brought this up. I should have mentioned that with the new Photon's I went more loose than I normally would. I do that with every new boot as they are very responsive before they break in. I'm also not one to crank down my boots or binding ankle straps even when they are broken in. So yes they are less responsive loosened but still much more responsive than most traditional set ups no matter how you look at it.

    I love your videos dude! thank you for posting this video. Im going to get the step ons either way but Im at a rock in a hard place on what version to choose. It's between the reflex, reflex x or genesis reflex. Im leaning towards the genesis. I had a question for you when you say the reflex X and reflex are more "responsive" do you mean its easier to whip turns on your toe and heel edge as well as stop and start on a dime ? What binding do you think will be better when doing those things?

  • @thegoodridesnow

    @thegoodridesnow

    5 ай бұрын

    Many thanks! Yes. Kind of like you described edge to edge. I would say all 3 are more responsive than almost any binding out there so lets start with that. For me with the Photon and Ruler's I tried they are too quick and can make some boards feel hookey and sometimes it can skid out a turn too fast for my taste. They are mellowing out the boots and even have the Photon Soft which is very diffrerent than my experience. So if you want a more normal response go Genesis/Photon Soft. If you want something close to hard booting if you pair it up with Ion's go X/Ions.

    11:33 these “two hole” positions baseplates have one hole centred , and one offset. The offset hole acts essentially as the heel/toe hang correction and you twist the baseplate 180° whichever way needs the adjustment. Still less adjustability than some bindings but atleast acts as the normal 3 hole boot centre options

  • @thegoodridesnow

    @thegoodridesnow

    Thanks for your take and bringing this up. I've been testing this more against the old 3 hole re:flex disc and you get more range. Testing against most non-burton bindings' discs there is much more adjustability. I'm finding when helping friends on the lower or higher end of the recommended sizing, this 2 hole 180 degree flip disc barely helps center the binding/boot on board.

    Been watching all your step on videos over and over, and I still can't seem to make a decision, so your expertise would come in great! I went with the Yes PYL Uninc per your recommendation (with the Burton Photons), but now I want a pair of step on bindings for them. I'm undecided if I should go with the regular Step On or the Genesis step on. Seems to me after watching both your reviews for the regular Step On and the Genesis is that the regular Step On is going to be a bit more responsive, but the Genesis is a bit more forgiving and comfortable. I really appreciate responsiveness but is the slight loss in responsiveness with the Genesis overall worth it for the greater comfort and flexibility for my med/stiff PYL Uninc, or would you go with the regular Step On for the greater responsiveness? Thanks in advance!

    Thanks! Dont know what binding yiur riding now, but since its not a step on your going to get a massive increase in response by just going to the gensis. The gensis step on and photon step on are going to turn the pyl uninc very quickly. And like i said, the increase in responsiveness from regular bindings to the step on is so much that theres no need to spit hairs with responsiveness. The genesis will have a better overall feel. This is Everett reaching back out to you about those toe clips for the step on bindings. Heard back from the warranty team and they said they have to be sent in to get fixed. Can't send out any spare parts for those unfortunately. Not even our Flagship stores have the ability to order them in and replace them at the store. I get that it's super frustrating, cause I MTB as well and know it's super easy to fix that part. The reasoning is just for liability reasons. I'm on your side where I think it's a little ridiculous of a policy, so I feel for you. Hope you have a good season though, and please hit me up if you have any other questions! Nice review/comparison, thx. I feel like they could come very close to a traditional binding feeling if they managed to make an EST- version with the hinge tech... I hope Burton is working on something like that. I don't know it that's possible though - I guess the boot cannot move too much in the binding to prevent the toeclits to pop out. I suspect that's also the reason why they didn't implement a full EVA footbed in the front but put some hard plastic underneath ot prevent the boot from sinking in too much and might compromise the holding mechanism... I'm not planning on getting on step ons anytime soon - especially since I still have 3 pairs of Adidas boots, which even though far from perfect, they are still the best fitting boots I ever had for my feet). I still follow the advancements of the tech and I'm quite interested in how they evolve... I definately want to test them out sometime to see how they feel. I can see myself ride them in the future when my riding gets more tamed. I can imagine that these bindings could be very comfortable because your feet are not "pressing" against an ankle strap on a toeside turn but "pull" the heelside up. I like alot of ankle support though so it might not be for me but I guess I just have to try them out.. the problem is that Burton boots don't really fit me that well. The biggest news however is that Nitro joined the in this season and is making Step on boots as well - that's awesome. The biggest problem of the system is that your feet have to agree with the few boot on offer otherwise you can forget about it again right away. It's really too bad that other companys like K2 came out with their own system right away to surf the wave again instead of biting the bullet and make boots for Burton's system - especially when their system is clearly inferior to Burton's. Usually competition is good for progression and the consumers but in this case it's just stupid.. if not more boot companys join the step on system, it will fade away again in a few years...

  • @thegoodridesnow

    I haven't done a measurement myself but heard from people who own both that the toe sticks out a little more with Genesis. Step On Adjustability is almost non existent so there isn't much you can do if you are on the upper or lower end of sizing. A two piece system with a much softer hammock high back isn't as durable but what I found is most break if you bring your foot from behind the binding up and over. Some accidentally step on the high back instead of into the foot bed. That can sometimes break it.

With years I've switched to all Mountain FS and I'm still riding a skate banana 2009 and a TRS 2019 with Genesis 2014 "classic" bindings and a pair of Burton Ion 2015... New detail : I'm a father now and I've totally tilted when you stepped out of the lift in a sec... I'm actually at les Arcs station so I totally see the point of Quickness of the step on system. Also, I've quite the FS aspect of the ride too. I've Never let the carving aspect of my ride (hot blast forever :) ). So i was wondering to go through this step on solution with the Genesis step on my boards (banana for the fun, trs for the fitness 😏) or thé "classical step on Burton" and also in case of switching, your advice also on the ION vs photon boots (step on of course). Many thx in advance.

    One thing a also like to know is how this system affects the footprint on the board. It looks like the heel-cleat adds quite a bit of bulk and pushes the boot more forward in the binding while on the heelside - like on most setups - the heelcup is the limiting factor in terms of booting out - at least it looks like that in the videos I've seen. How do they compare to a regular boot - binding combo in terms of footprint?

  • @thegoodridesnow

    @thegoodridesnow

    Жыл бұрын

    Great point! So the cleat at it's furthest most point sticks out 1.5cm. That being said the cleat does attach well inside the highback. I don't have a Step On binding to get the exact measurement but it is probably around 5mm. I'll look into it more when I get my hands on another step on binding. 5mm is a good bit in snowboarding so you are right. it does push the boot up more towards the toe side edge than traditional straps. The Photon 9 Wide boot I own is the same reduced footprint as every other Burton boot.

  • @floz9718

    @floz9718

    @@thegoodridesnow I would love to see such a comparison even though with my size 9.5 boots I would be fine on almost all boards but it sure would be really interesting for the guys with bigger feet to see a direct comparison to see how much edge angle/footprint over the board you are sacrificing (if any) if you are going with step ons vs a "normal" Burton binding- boot- combination. I noticed that my Adidas Acerra sticks out more over the toeside even when I only swith between my Cartels (old design) and the Malavitas which have the added "bulk" of the heel hammock and a slightly different highbackshape which doesn't agree with my boots aswell as the Cartels (there is no percievable difference in performance though). So I suspect the step on mechanism at the heel, which requires quite a bit of added material, will add a substantial amount of footprint.

    Something you keep saying is very confusing: “the genesis step on is not as responsive as the regular step on.” However, Burton advertises the genesis step on as stiffer than the original, but not as stiff as the X. Somewhere in the middle. Can you clarify what you mean by “responsive”? Thanks! Edit (Jan 22) - spoke with Burton tech on the phone. The Genesis is not made of the same materials as the entry level Step-on, and if not for the high-back, the stiffness and responsiveness would edge (ever so marginally) toward Genesis. The high-back mesh/cushion creates the comfort that somewhat reduces the response and makes it feel less stiff than the original (and that's why it's rated not-as-stiff on their website). Seems like it's the best of all worlds!

    Not sure where u got your info. Burton rates the Genesis Step On as less responsive on the US site, and nowhere does it say what you just said. Most importantly, I rode all three with the same boot and know what I felt. I like the ride feel better of the Genisis though.

    @@thegoodridesnowawesome - thanks for the reply! you’re my first ever reply on KZread (I’m a noob at interacting like this). I saw the slider on the Burton website and it shows the basic step on stiffer, you’re right. i was racking my brain on where/who told me, and it was the guys at EVO. something along the lines of “the materials of the binding are stronger/stiffer than the basic step on, but the hammock makes it more comfortable” …. 🤷🏻‍♂️ The EVO product description says this: “A step up from the basic Step On, the Burton Step On Genesis Snowboard Bindings are a bit stiffer, adding performance to their outstanding comfort and ease of use.” Sounds like that description may be inaccurate? Those guys do have a lot of Burton reps in/out of the shop so maybe there’s something to that? No idea. I’ve been riding step ons for years on all mountain boards, and trying to buy a new set to put on my Flagship - was just trying to dial in the right one to match the stiffness of the Flagship. Thanks again for responding! 🤙🏼

  • @thegoodridesnow

    They didn't say more responsive but did say stiffer, and that is inaccurate. It happens with big stores. Evo is a great place to buy from, but always try to get info from honest, objective, independent reviewers. It is a step up in terms of design, and like I said, I like the overall ride better of the Genesis vs. the regular Step On. More response doesn't mean it's a better binding. All three Step On bindings are super responsive compared to most strap ins so it's not super important. My difference I found was while the genesis x strap bindings' buckles failed completely in cold weather with little use the step on genesis had no buckles to fail! So that a plus in the step ons... That said I had to contend with the step on genesis step on bindings losing both hammocks, the rear gas pedals, and the rear toe clip wearing to the point they failed by day 60. So yes, we can compare crap with crap but why would we when Union is a company?

They have taken strap boots that are stiffened all over and left toe box an unreinforced double stitched seam. No problem whent he boot is held down by straps... but in step ons ALL forces are applied to that seam because of those rigid toe clips and pull on that seam... I bet (like my strap rulers that are 60 days and like new) the strap photons will last the season without falling apart... No jumps. So yeah, the stepons and photons were ruined in one season. Their non-step ons are good for a second season. Expensive system that's only value for casuals/beginners. There's a reason you can't rent these things... At least anywhere I've gone.
