The idea of Joe sitting down to explain sound to someone who works on the game's sound department is hilarious.

the real problem with this games sound is that it plays paradise city every time you start it up even with the music turned off

Been playing this on my switch every day after your recommendation from a game sack ep. And when I play in docked mode my woofer is working OT. Thanks for trying Joe. Loving the new channel!!

This makes me wonder about the impact of haptics and adjacent types of technologies used to augment/imitate the bass experience. Like but-kicker transducers attached to a couch, D-box in theaters, and more recently, I noticed a game (towerfall ascension) that used the vibration in the controller to accentuate bass in moments of the game. Any thoughts, Joe? It might make an interesting video. :-)

I recall Burnout has always had that impact, crunch, and power within its sound design. Bummer to hear what happened

I've yet to find a Switch game that has any discrete subwoofer, and I've tried a bunch. I've heard that Splatoon 2 might, though.

To be honest I never got why discrete LFE is a thing, if your home theater is set up correctly it should do bass management and route bass from all channels to two or more subs according to room correction profile; and not to mention that if you have full range speakers you don't need subwoofers at all. But I'm more of a music guy and I would rather put my money into better stereo system than into another set of dacs and preamps (or surround processor) power amps and speakers just to have surround; so what do I know.

Goodness no! Then it would be way too boomy. If you have full range speakers then they don't need to be routed to the sub (but you still need a sub or two just for the dedicated subwoofer channel). The discrete subwoofer has nothing to do with the other speakers and can be enabled on its own when needed. Having one sub to manage the bass coming from the discrete subwoofer channel as well as all of the other speakers is just too much, especially since you only have one subwoofer level adjustment to account for ALL of the speaker's bass. If you have li'l speakers then I'd get a separate sub just for bass management, but to my knowledge no processor allows a sub just for that in addition to the discrete sub. All or nothing.

@@GameSack I'm pretty sure miniDSP makes more than one device that can do that, it's just a pain to setup. I think I saw one more brand that makes processors that can do it, but I can't remember the name (Emotiva maybe...), I actually do the opposite, my speakers can go to 28hz so I just bland LFE into stereo mix.

Don't worry, Joe. I have the OG Xbox, Burnouts for it and Atmos system with two homemade 12" subwoofers (Peerless XL elements) 😜👌

Audio professional here. How high do you have your subwoofer turned up? When you listen to music outside of gaming, do you not use your sub? Properly calibrated, a sub is great for music! And wouldn't the low pass filter be in the sub's amp anyway? It should be. If you are running a sub without a low pass filter, you're gonna' have a bad time.

For a "professional" your comment doesn't work the way you think it does. He made perfect sense with what he said, and was right. How are you a "professional audio expert", which isn't an actual job description

Be careful what you wish (or ask) for, you might just get it, or may be it's just Criterion saying "This is not democracy, you'll have it and you'll like it."

The worst subwoofer experience in a game was halo 2 on original xbox. They forgot to program in the LFE completely. I had just got my 5.1 at the time and was like wtf.

i'm not a fan of EA's licensed generic-top-40-cheese soundtracks so whenever i play burnout paradise on xbox one i just use a background music player app playing the first two burnout games' soundtracks instead of the in-game music. 🤷‍♂️
